People keep saying the $250 is too much but its priced absolutely perfectly..The only thing Mattel fubar'ed on is the 5000 mark. That part is where corporate greed comes in. They've shown us a physical ring...Not renders but an actual produced ring...That tells us that the molds/production pieces are already there. What we're paying for in the $250 is just the manufacturing/labor. Whether they make 5000, 2500 or 1000 of these pieces, once you add in their "Chinese manufacturing costs" & their added in gross margins if these are "made to order" then they are going to make a profit regardless. I think steve said that the pieces were 3d printed and hand painted?

As cool as the set is, I can’t help but think they chose a terrible theme for the first one. That era of WWE is one of the least popular in history and it shouldn’t be a surprise that at that price point it’s not being backed at a greater rate. The ring is awesome and so is the stage but it’s far from my ideal arena setup. I hope it gets backed so we can get some RA or Attitude era stuff in the future but if it were me I would’ve started the Mattel Creations off with one of those eras. Also Doink is such a crapty incentive let’s be real… I take it you didn’t back it…? I’m not spending $250 on something I have no use for.

A sample doesn’t mean the mold is made. There are tons samples made before “steel is cut” to make the molds. Those molds are where the biggest costs are. Before that, sample parts are made and sent to the design team to test and make adjustments. They look to see if stuff isn’t working right or if pieces need to be enlarged or shrunken a bit. Then they have the paint masters, so they can check to make sure they have the right colors. When everything is finalized, they make the mass production mold. It’s a long back and forth process with lots of samples being made before everything is perfectly dialed in. For example, if you look at Diesel in this set, the pins in his shoulders are still showing and the paint looks kind of thick. It’s a paint master sample. They are probably very careful trying to pose that up for pictures as it probably falls apart constantly (the parts are usually held together by some tack or styrene sticks)

IIRC as per Steve, none of the molds are actually made.

But 5,000 wouldn’t be as much of an issue if it wasn’t $250. At $150 it would sell better.

Well, I don’t know if it will hit 5,000 or not. But, at this rate, at $250 if it doesn’t hit 5k then collectors miss out and Mattel misses out on huge profit. If they lower it to $150, then it’s more likely to hit 5k or more backers, meaning collectors don’t miss out and Mattel makes money.

they absolutely shot too high on the initial backing. and then trying to get even MORE for just another figure and cheap ringskirts.
again, this is typical corporate cluelessness....they saw how Haslab's things took off and they kept adding tiers, so they said "cool! we can do that too!" not realizing that those tiers were added BECAUSE they hit the backing number so fast...so they figured they could get even more by creating these small bonuses
point is, you dont come out of the gate saying we want 8,000 people to buy this.
you start at 3k, and once that goal is hit you say "you want another Ultimate? get us to 5k"

If this had been the entrance stage and Doink for $125, I think it would be backed already.

This isn’t an issue of cost, it’s an issue of Mattel taking the money prematurely, it turned everyone away day one and set the tone of a failed campaign from day one.

How is the ring now valued at $150? Previous ones were $100, having fake wood planks doesn’t add 50% value.

How is the ring now valued at $150? Previous ones were $100, having fake wood planks doesn’t add 50% value. People keep getting way too caught up on "value." It's a premium, limited edition item. It doesn't matter what the pieces would/should sell for individually at mass retail. This isn't a mass retail item. It's going to be priced at a premium because of it. Mass retail items are cheaper because they sell more of them, lowering the per unit cost. If people don't want the items or can't fit it into their budget, that's totally understandable. But everybody caught up on what the item should, could, or would be priced at is just spinning their wheels. Mattel priced the item at where they need it to be in order to hit their desired profit margins. They're not dropping the price, or piecing out only X and Y, or moving the goal posts closer. If it's an item someone wants, they should back the project if able. If it's not, that's fine too. But we also shouldn't be shocked if this kills future plans along with it.

Mass produced in every TRU, Meijer, Walmart, plus on Amazon and RSC vs limited made to order quantities. The more you produce and sell the bigger the profit margins allowing you to sell it at a lower price.

It's fairly obvious most people here have no idea what they're talking about when it comes to budgets and things like that.

I 100% understand that about the entrance way. BUT, there’s no way Mattel would only sell this ring once. They’d wait a bit and then start putting new deco on it and just say “well, the *New Gen* deco was the exclusive.” They are not so slyly using this campaign to fund a new ring mold for themselves when they don’t need to.

There’s no retail space for them to sell something this big. Target and Walmart don’t want high priced, slow to move, bulky items. If this doesn’t get funded it won’t be produced. At best, they’ll update the Main Event ring.

Sure are a lot of people in here with prior corporate toy manufacturing experience. Profit margins to meet public traded quarterly goals, manufacturing/raw material/labor/tooling budgets and costs, concept/design/licensee contract adherence... this is a very informative thread.

LEGO especially has large box, expensive items with no problems moving them, but there are plenty of other examples.
