Cody's a tryhard and it's easy to dunk on him. Some guys just bring that out in people.
Objectively, despite his featured role he's done a lot for other guys, so he's not selfish in that respect. He's too prominent a name to not get a lot of screen time, and it feels like his time onscreen has been reasonably proportionate to his role. Certainly it's been adjusted as more and more big names are coming in, so he's not stealing spotlight from the hot new acts.
One of the things that may be hurting him, weirdly enough, is that a lot of his screen time is off in Cody World. His angles tend to be really distanced from everything else in the company. I think this was an attempt to not overpush him but it ended up making his segments seem like some other show got spliced into the one you're trying to watch. He's a living Max Headroom signal hijack.
The points against Cody: He's way too self-serious and never really in on the joke about that (similar to someone wHHHose name I can't quite recall). Every time he tries to play the hero it comes across as fan fiction. There's an inescapable sense that he's living above his talent level. His external projects are eye-rolling. He's the reason we've sat through so much Brandi. THAT TATTOO OH MY GOD. There's just something cringe about the guy.

He doesn't have a heel bone in his body. Him trying to be a heel would not come off genuine.

He was always the odd man out of the EVP group; the one who took a vacation on the indies, but wasn't born there. He's a WWE guy. It's there in his in-ring style. It's there in his promo style. It's there in his attempts to be part of the 'entertainment' industry as much as the wrestling industry. All of the original AEW guys have had their creative wobbles, but Cody doesn't have decades of indy fan support to make up for it. He was WWE as can be, except for a few years when he wasn't. It gave him some good will, but not enough to cover a reality show, a neck tattoo, frequent disappearances, weird promo choices, etc.
I didn't buy Cody as a top guy at first, but his early promos sold me. The 10-lashes segment is still my favourite thing I've seen in AEW.
