Given how much time has passed and how many figures have been released and the current way contracts work I feel it's unfair to even compare the two. As a newer collector the newer waves have given me the chance to grab some talent at retail that would have set me back huge hunting down older versions. There is just no way to ignore the huge amount of Legends released throughout the years in the regular elite series and elsewhere that would have been locks for this series had it continued to go on past cancelation.

Notable omissions from the Legends series 2.0: Hulk Hogan, The Rock, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Kurt Angle, not to mention people who's deals have lapsed. I suspect we're going to start seeing more women in the line going forward as well.

Legends Phase 1 was wrong character and/or poor attire selections and failed because of that.
The carding is incredible like many have expressed and if you have the few gems from it like Demolition, Martel and Vader (or Road warriors if that’s your era) then they are fantastic.
The phase 2 hasn’t been mind blowing either though. Valentine is superb and Nash was good, but I’ve often skipped entire sets

Out of all the figures released since the relaunch, there has only been one must-have figure for me (Valentine)... so that kind of says it all. I've been collecting since the start of the line though... as others have pointed out, if you're a newer collector or haven't already got a lot of the figures, then it's going to appeal to you a lot more. I prefer the original legends line...the characters, the packaging, the QC, the face paint apps (not a fan of the face print) Yeah, I can take or leave the whole TrueFX thing... a lot of the time, the faces looked better before.

I would love this although I'd personally prefer a '90s DX HBK instead of the '00s DX. In a perfect world we get both :-) I'm down with that

Legends Phase 1 was wrong character and/or poor attire selections and failed because of that. I agree on the poor attire selections or at least the "less mainstream" ones but the characters I thought were good. Better than they are now, really. Akeem, Rick Martel, Demolition, Macho Man, Sgt. Slaughter, Ricky Steamboat, Rick Rude, Iron Sheik, Dusty Rhodes, these were huge to me. The only ones I didn't think fit the line were Eddie, DDP, Stonecold and the Rock. In a way, I'm glad the costume choices were the less popular ones because there'd be a slim chance they would have visited any of them now like Sgt. Slaughter's AWA/early WWF gear and Road Warriors in their AWA/WCW/NWA black costumes where as we were always going to get the red pads Road Warriors and Sgt. Slaughter's more popular camo gear. But with that said, it wasn't a strong initial showing to more casual nostalgia collectors.

Some selections that have been store exclusives/Collector's Edition (like British Bulldog or Warlord) would have been Legends figures during Phase 1 because, if I'm not mistaken, Mattel wasn't putting guys like Warrior or Savage into the main Elite line back then. They were all in the Legends line (or Defining Moments). So that's something to consider. We're getting legends in ways other than in the Legends line, so that takes some away from Phase 2. Phase 2 started relatively recently, but if guys like Superstar Billy Graham or Rocky Johnson were in the line with that packaging, I think overall Phase 2 would be stronger (maybe they weren't seen as in demand enough to make it, though, even if Mattel could have done it).
Anyway, I agree that it doesn't feel quite the same, though I do enjoy it. As others have said, the biggest issue is WWE's lack of signed legends to pick from. It could improve some with Hogan or HBK or Warrior, but we're still getting those figures, so that's another way Phase 2 feels different than Phase 1.

Packaging matter very little when you can just open them. It’s gotten cheaper and more flimsy. Gonna be harder and harder to find/keep a figure mint in box when they’re paper thin now.

I don’t think there’s a comparison. First go around they were able to sign talent and we got a lot of fresh names and a lot that still haven’t been duplicated. Guys like Akeem, Martel, Demolition, Von Erichs, etc. Not saying the second attempt has been bad but when you’re restarting it 10 years into having the license and restricted by only having WWE signed talent you’re gonna get a lot of the same characters we’ve already gotten.

First wave was only better because nobody had been made yet. After that, flashbacks, hall of fame etc this couldn’t compare.
Having said all that, any dedicated line to legends is fine by me. Greg Valentine was a huge want, Mean Mark and acolytes Are exciting to me. DX is cool. I’ve got all the Jakes. Plenty of meat on the bone for me.

Hard to say which is better, but I like both iterations. I wish all legends figures were in the legends style packaging, instead of mixing them in the elite waves, that would make it better in my opinion.
