It might be a little of both the lawsuit and Vince wanting to make a "brand"
WWE the initials itself seem like a brand name. I think back in the days of our youth we might have specified if we were watching WWF or WCW but since WWE bought WCW and changed the name, so many associate wrestling with WWE.
The lawsuit may have got things rolling, but I think it was also probably Vince wanting to have his global entertainment brand. The only thing confusing is still having "wrestling" in the name.
Vince definitely didn't want to change the name. He fought in court for years against the Wildlife Fund and appealed the decision at least twice.
