Just an observation on Social media groups and second hand websites. Elites seem to be on a 10 year low. Defining Moments, Elite flashbacks, Legends (new run) and a lot of other Elite series have dropped massively, almost to retail prices.
I never saw this coming. What’s the cause? Is it cost of living or are newer Ultimates of older figures causing the prices to fall?
I’d be interested to know peoples thoughts.

Ultimates are superior.
People will/are trying to cash out before their elites get the upgrade eventually. Some will obviously stay due to contracts.
Bret target legends 3 is a perfect example. Other then the custom Bret package for the RSE, it has absolutely nothing on the new Ultimate all pink Bret. Completely superior.
I almost bought the RSE, but I'm SO GLAD I didn't.

Maybe the action figure and collectibles market bubble popping? Just last year almost all Elites from 2010-2019 were going for insane prices.

Not exactly cheap out there anymore these days to live all things considered.

I’m one of the ones selling my elites. My reason is that it’s almost like Mattel have started again with Ultimate Editions and I’m loving them. As a MOC collector, the uniform packaging appeals more than the random Elite lines. The older Elites just weren’t as appealing anymore without extra hands and different heads.

No clue, maybe people are trying to get rid of all their figures at once... causing an overflow of figures? I'm surprised there are still a lot of UE's available though. Those things were long gone like 5-6 months after a release. For me, nowadays I'm trying to just keep one version of the guys I collect which are usually Monday Night wars, with some 2000's and sprinkled in with some modern guys. Everything else I realized was going a bit overboard. However, if I do find that the UE is superior I'll probably get rid of my elite version.

Definitely a combination of people spending less and the ultimate line. I recently started collecting again After years of not and I’m already sitting on elites that I want to get rid of

Within the hobby, I do think the more avid collectors are "starting over" with Ultimates. Although, I think a case could be made for superior Elite versions in some instances, NWO Macho. But if you missed out on some of those exclusives, it's easy to not need them any more because of the Ultimates.
On a macro level, I think we're seeing push back from collectors with the economy/inflation. There seems to be a full on revolt against Hasbro right now, justifiably so imo. We saw a lot of people use their covid checks on collectibles as disposable income. It made the market insane. We'll see what it's like a year from now, but I do think we're entering a bear market on toys/collectibles at the moment. It's always cycles with this stuff. There will certainly be collectors who are nostalgic to the original Elite versions at some point down the road, even if that's not a current demand driving secondary prices.

Yeah good point, it did blow up over Covid and now it seems that a lot of people are probably selling what they bought during the pandemic. Myself included!

Covid drove a lot of these prices up. Now they're coming down. Last year Hasbro Mailaway Hogan was hitting like £2k, now it's halved.

the product lost alot of momentum. i literally have cut way back on elites. basics arent even buyable, and UE is just really good right now also. ive come full circle on the torsos. love them now. and the butterfly joints. etc... its a great line right now.

I honestly think that the product is to blame for the big decline in WWE figure interest. People seem to be less and less interested in the characters. Characters for the most part all look similar now and there's not a lot of exciting gimmicks or looks. I still see Mattel figures I want but they are getting further between. It also seems like Mattel caught up big time with a lot of Legends figures so I imagine a lot of collectors are just not seeing things that they're interested in.
I'd say this is true across the board for toys. Seems to me like the interest in McFarlane, Marvel Legends, GI Joe have all dropped off heavily lately.
I think something about the pandemic got more adult collectors into the game. Just like any other hobby, figure collecting had a big bump of interest while everyone was stuck at home and online shopping got easier and easier. I think the world going back to normal plus a glooming economic uncertainty is just making a lot of people uninterested in toys again.
I'd say its worst with Marvel Legends but I see it across all toys now: rising prices are killing interest. We are getting worse and worse releases in some instances but toy companies want to charge $5+ more.

Everyone stuck at home during the pandemic with a ton of diposable income definitely boosted the market and artificially inflated the prices.
For a couple of years pre-COVID, I casually started putting together a LJN collection. I was able to cherry pick what figures I wanted, the figures were great quality and the prices were reasonable - like anywhere from $5-$20 per figure. All pretty relaxing.
Once COVID hit, I noticed a massive leap, and suddenly old beaten Pipers and Orndorffs were going for $60+ and I was getting outbid left and right.
It's definitely started to settle down again.

Upgraded technology of course makes new figures a lot better so why keep the old ones

Old elites, by and large, looked like shit. But they were the best we had at the time so people needed to have them. Now they're not even good compared to modern elites, let alone Ultimates.
Elite 96 Trojan Hogan has a better likeness than anything we got in the first decade of Mattel. Why would anyone go through the trouble of finding and paying out the nose for a DM hogan?

Other then the custom Bret package for the RSE, it has absolutely nothing on the new Ultimate all pink Bret. Completely superior. I almost bought the RSE, but I'm SO GLAD I didn't. Bret legends 3 is the wrong example imho, the elite version is 100 times better than UE version (a repaint of the first UE, with wrong details).
The perfect example is the last Ultimate Warrior, more details, more accessories and likness.

The figure is superior by default due to all the new articulations regardless if it's a repaint of a previous ultimate. Most elite Bret Harts are repaints as well, so that being a knock against the ultimate isn't fair imo. Not to mention, if you stand both together, with both jackets on, the RSE is basically a statue, while you have free rotation of the arms with the ultimate. With the ultimate, you're getting Extra heads Extra hands Better joints More articulation Better pose ability Arguably better looking overall And about $150 less currently Still, your example of warrior is correct, as is the recent nwo Target Macho. At the end of the day, if I had the opportunity to have both Bret's infront of me and was able to choose which one to keep, it would be the ultimate hands down.

RSE Bret is a better figure though. It doesn't have that horrible plastic jacket from the UE (yeah the stiff arms on the RSE aren't the greatest but it still looks better), and it has more accurate head with the correct hair colour.
