I am doing a rewatch of RAW (and Nitro) and Sycho Sid is getting some massive pops.
The story post-KOTR is that Austin said his famous line and his popularity exploded. But watching it now it is Sid getting the major pops and is so over with the crowd. There is nothing Austin 3:16.
If his heart was in it and he stayed around, could Sid have been huge in the Attitude Era?

No, I don't think so.
Sid was over like rover though in 1996 when he returned, and even in 1997. But bigger than Austin?? No.
Could Sid have remained over with the WWE audience while Austin was the man there?? Sure.
Sid proved in 1999 in ECW that he was over. ECW fans cheered Sid like crazy!! This is a smart mark audience and yet they loved Sid. Hell, everyone loves Sid.
Even I am a Sid fan.

Yeah I'm a Sid fan as well but no way he passes Austin in popularity during this era
Wouldve been a sight though to see em face to face with Kane

Sid was awesome, but he was never going to be at Austin's level.

True, Austin's rise wasn't exactly how they say (WWE loves to revise history to fit their narrative), it wasn't really until he started his program with Bret Hart that his popularity began to rise. You did start to see some signs after the promo, but it wasn't overflowing like they try to sell it. In fact, it really didn't pick up speed until after WM13. As for Sid rising to Austin's level, I can't see that. He was definitely popular, but he couldn't cut a great promo and he wasn't very good in the ring. After a while, that would have worn on people. Austin was on every show cutting a promo or having a match and his popularity kept soaring, I'm not sure Sid could have done that. But it is interesting to think about, even Vince wanted Sid to be his "new" Hogan in 1991/92.

He def was on his way but it wasnt instantaneous. Sid as the face of the company back in the early 90s is something interesting to think about as he had the look Vince loves but like you said his promos and in ring work were nothing to write home about.Big fan of his like I said but I just couldnt see him as the top dog

Since nobody else surpassed Austin in popularity I dont think Sid would have either...BUT he would have been over massive in the AE. He got over huge everywhere he was...no matter what.
Part of the heel Skyscrapers-fans are chanting we want Sid.
got cheered for nearly killing Pillman in war Games. was cheered more than any of the other 4H when he was in there
was cheered vs Hogan.
was cheered when he was meant to be booed as Vaders ally.
Got cheered vs Nash after attacking HBK
fans booed HBK outta the building in MSG is favor of Sid...
fans have always resisted booing him.
"I dont know sh*t crybaby" to Bret is one of the greatest lines ever

I'm picturing a promo in the ring with him and Vince both red in the face going nuts on each other.Ending with Vince taking the bomb
Imagine that POP.wouldve been gold

He would have been top of the card for sure -Not Austin level, nobody but maybe rock was - he actually probably would have been the guy putting over Austin after his feud with Bret Hart - Maybe something like Working wih Taker post Mania 13, staying heel and Working with Austin around Summer Slam, its sid who would probably get a title shot in December with HBK - Then you would think a big put over at Mania (maybe beating vadar or Mankind) and being Austins first challenger instead of Dude Love, then moving onto Kane that next summer.

I think he could have had a strong role like Kane through the AE had he kept to it. Not on Austins level but just overly popular for demolishing people same as Kane. I just don't see him ever cutting promos to the level of Austin's or even someone like Edge back then. Definitely could have been a solid monster though and way more popular than he was. Im not sure I know anyone who doesnt like Sid. The real lunatic fringe if you ask me. He pulled off that "crazy" look so well just like Brian Pillman did but he had the sheer size to back it up.
I wanna say it was Sid? that I found on TV as a kid when flipping through channels. I watched completely mesmerized as he put someone who already had a neck brace on through a table. To this day I have no idea who it was or why bc I cant find it on YT.

Since 2016 I began watching Raws from 1997 onwards for the first time and was very surprised at the pops Sid got.
I thought he was disliked by the crowd because I assumed he was a heel in 1996, and also because I hated him as a kid in 1999 in WCW.
So it was a surprise as to why he left in 1997 when he was still over.
I'm watching Nitros in 1999 and I feel Sid is a little too shoved in your face. Rambling promos, mediocre matches, okay storyline with Goldberg but overall nothing impressive. I can see why I disliked him as a kid.

LOL no. Sid lacked the mic skills and ring presence that Austin had.
IMO he was more of a WCW guy than a WWF guy. When he returned in 1996 and through to 1997 he didn't fit in imo. In the main event scene he stuck out like a sore thumb and when he left he wasn't missed.
His departure didn't effect the company at all.
