I do find it funny how some people seem to be under the impression that Mattel somehow coulda made any celebrity and they chose Ali. That Tyson, Rodman, Lauper, etc were all on the table and Mattel was like “nah, we wanna do Ali.” Truth is that he was probably the biggest name that WWE was willing and able to sign.

Ali still has a huge cultural presence, and as someone born well after his career was over, I've watched nearly all of his fights and consider myself a fan. But I agree that this would most appeal to an older demographic who is largely aging out of collecting.
I still passed on this one. While I collect Golden Era, I don't have any special place for WM1 and ref Ali is less colorful than Zeus or Mr T were. I love the boxing figure, but don't really see where it has a place in my wrestling collection. If it were a $40 2-pack, sure. But at double that after shipping and tax, I can see why this is slow to move.

I think it was pretty obvious since this was leaked that it wouldn’t sell as well as past exclusives, weird choice. Although this board doesn’t speak for the whole collector community, I’d never known such a dull reaction which did speak volumes and even some of the big name reviewers on YouTube etc were unsure about its popularity. They may well have made lots more of this one but regardless, it’s such a small window of wrestling appeal and nobody cares about having a boxing version. Hopefully this pushes Mattel to get back to more Wrestling central item next time but doesn’t scare them so much that they increase appetite but reduce the volume available. Gotta disagree there... it would be crazy to have the licence for Ali and not make one in his boxing gear. Same goes with Tyson (if they ever get the rights)... even though we never saw him in his boxing gear in WWE, I'd definitely want a ring-gear Tyson (as well as a suited/Austin confrontation and/or a DX version). Appreciate that, shouldn’t say that NOBODY wants him in boxing gear but it’s a very small minority. Ali figures have been out before from other companies and shelf warmed. Don’t get me wrong, it’s cool and I’ve ordered one for the mania 1 attire but I’m not sure people were desperate to have him in the collection, I just don’t think the age of people collecting now want him, on the whole. Tyson is a different beast, he’d be way more popular given the age of a lot of legend collectors, he was also a lot more central to WWF programming than Ali ever was. Tyson is far too popular for it to be an SDCC exclusive, he needs to be a regular release for sure….OR they need to make so many of him for SDCC that people don’t miss out. The whole exclusive thing is kind of dead now anyway. The past two ‘exclusives’ have been sold on WWE.com and elsewhere and the secondary market is flooded with them. It’s cool to have limited pieces but I just think it’s a dead thing now. Even with more ‘rare’ elites, Mattel are pumping out the re-releases.

In a perfect world I would've wanted boxer Ali and Inoki as a 2 pack. If it was a single release of just a referee Ali I would've passed. The boxer Ali is what sold me on it.

I think there's an "age" thing here with the Ali figure.....
His last "fight" was in 1981 and his legit boxing career really wound down in the early 1970's..... almost 50 years ago. Even by 1985 at Wrestlemania 1 the decline of his health was noticeable, and that was almost 40 years ago.
So to be a "longtime fan" of Ali while he was active you'd have to be in what, your 60's or older..... and I don't think the 60+ crowd is a huge buyer of Mattel collectible toys, for a lot of reasons. Is there anyone 60+ on this message board? I'm not being a a jerk, I'm legit curious....
Same reason we don't get figures of guys like Gorgeous George, Gorilla Monsoon, George Hackenshmidt, Lou Thesz, etc. They pre-date most collectors.

And Ali was pretty much done before I can remember. I never was a boxing fan, but it was all Tyson when I was in high school in the late 80s. I only knew Ali wrestling wise from the ref gig at WM1, and it wasn't until years later that I learned about the Ali vs Inoki fight. The thing is that if there are Ali fans out there - there should have been some sort of adversising to them - and in a Wrestling world, we are not it. I am sure there are boxing communities out there like ours, and that is the place that this should have been advertised.

I don't follow boxing, and WM1 happened 8 months before I was born. So I'm not attached to this at all.

Probably woulda been a better idea to cut the production number to the MOQ and sell them individually instead of a box set.

I hope they keep these numbers going forward. But Mattel gonna Mattel and look at this and reduce the quantity next year I bet. If they upped the production of these, sigh. You’d think they know their hardcore collector base by this point.

I do hope that Mattel (or someone else...perhaps Storm Collectibles) makes an Inoki. You have to wonder how they were able to use his likeness (even without showing his face) if he's not under a deal...But I don't know the specific legalities.

What a flop this turned out to be. Have we ever had a SDCC exclusive still able to order days after the event?

What a flop this turned out to be. Have we ever had a SDCC exclusive still able to order days after the event? I'm guessing they produced way more of this figure thinking there would be a huge crossover with sports and entertainment fans. It still being available could be deceiving... or it could have been a flop. Mattel is so closed lipped on numbers we'll never know.

What a flop this turned out to be. Have we ever had a SDCC exclusive still able to order days after the event? Yeah. Undertaker was on Matty Collector forever until RSC bought their remaining inventory and it was on their site for a while until it was sold at a massive discount. Shockmaster also was on Matty forever until around Black Friday of that year where it was sold at around half off with free shipping. Yankem was a TRU SDCC exclusive and that took forever to sell out. Virgil was a TRU NYCC exclusive and also was slow to sell out.

Apparently they’re shipping next business day. So I can see some impatient people not wanting to wait a couple weeks and pay the extra $30.
