My main question is who knows if they made more? It’s a real possibility barely anyone cares about his set. But if they made more.. why do it with this set instead of Sarge or NHB? It could be that it took years of convincing to increase production. That’s possible.

As I have said earlier and I will say it now also this is not as hot as Sarge and NHB set.... Gijoe collectors are crazy that Sarge should have been overproduced.

I’m not disagreeing with that but I think it furthers my point of this set wasn’t the one to produce more of because you’re making a boxing figure under a wrestling umbrella and trying to get wrestling fans to spend $80 on a boxer

But as a wrestling collector this time around I didn't even bother to visit the site to buy this set. Ali didn't made as many appearances in the ring as compared to Zues.

My guess is that Macho was a low production number because every SDCC prior have massively undersold. That was a huge success so they upped the numbers for Mr T. Also a hit so make a few more with Sarge. That sold out in seconds so do more for No Holds Barred. Another quick sell out so let’s keep increasing the numbers. Ali doesn’t really have that same 80s nostalgic buzz so probably sold well but shoulda had a lower production run on par with Slim Jim Macho.

Even if they produced more figures, they must have made that quantity decision based on previous sales numbers.
We can all agree that the goal was *not* to have these available a month later. So based on their sales data, they increased production (possibly) to meet expected demand. This did not happen.
Safe to conclude that this was not nearly as popular as they expected. Because no one wants a boxer in a wrestling line, and there was little crossover appeal. GI Joe collectors collect action figures. There is no market for boxing figures.

Yet people are sure that Mike Tyson would sell out if there were a set with two versions of him released. Maybe it's just generational disconnect with Ali?

No one knows for sure if they increased production, so why is it being accepted as reason for this to happen? The more likely scenario is that it just wasn’t as popular as they thought it would be. I picked up one…but only due to FOMO and it was the SDCC exclusive. If they made Ali as strictly the ref and added a Hogan with new headsculpts, posed them in the package with Ali raising Hogans hand it would have sold out by now.

Big Boa was announced as a coming figure for the Gi Joe Classified line and he technically is a boxing figure. He will sell really good based on it being Gi Joe and the nostalgia factor. The Classified line is just that popular. Now imagine if Mattel and Hasbro put out Refridgerator Perry as a figure at the same time...Classified's remake of the mail away figure and Mattel doing his appearance at Wrestlemania 2. The Hasbro one will sell a lot more.

I'm surprised that the SDCC exclusives were available to order on Mattel Creations for days instead of selling out in seconds

Got mine today. The likeness looks a little better in person. I’m a big 85-87 fan and even I’m pretty blah about this exclusive.

Ever since Sarge, I've been sour on the SDCC exclusive. That said, the Ali retro seems to be nothing anyone in the Retro thread wants, and yet we are getting him. Maybe its generational with Ali, but I could not give a hoot.

Someone answer this for me please. The last couple of years Mattel has made it clear they don't care at all about collectors that collect for value, I think we all will agree with that (Rereleases, Best of's ,ect..). Mattel can see how much Sarge and NHB are selling on the secondary market and those molds are already made....Why have they not reordered more and put them for sell on MC? There's no reason that they wouldn't except for the fact that maybe SDCC wouldn't allow it?

There's no reason that they wouldn't except for the fact that maybe SDCC wouldn't allow it? Who’s to say they won’t? Zeus has already been re-released as an elite with some slight differences. Rip can potentially be released in white trunks or street clothes. That Sarge could be a future elite in the legends line. Heck, it may even be possible to re-release on the Greatest Hits line.
