Starting in lockdown I got back into figure collecting and loved what Mattel were doing - Ultimates, the return of retros, some brilliant characters in the elite line, and legends. I spent thousands!
Since this summer I've noticed a real change.
There is loads less i am looking forward too. The quality control isn't as strong. Those Angle / Eddie body part choices are just ridiculous. As a MOC collector the new elite boxes are dreadful. The endless hard to find store exclusives. The endless repaints and re releases. The choices of who is in the line is baffling - the WM40 elite series being a case in point.
In a nutshell, I am considering stopping collecting much like I did with AEW when they went through something similar.
Has anyone done that before and would you recommend just selling everything and moving on or keeping a hold for a couple of years to see if it picks up.

The only advice I will give is never sell your collection. You'll regret it if you do that. I never got rid of my Jakks collection, when I started with Mattel. I cherish it all and am proud of everything I have.

If you're a long term collector, don't sell out. Business will pick up, as they say. If you've only jumped in recently, then do as you wish, it's not a lot of time lost. That being said, I'm going to save a ton of money in the next couple of months, due to the choices made on SurSer, Rumble, and Mania sets, I don't need any of the Legends flashbacks, and not too many Elite Legends (who I stick to) on the horizon in the main line. But in the meantime, I can focus on filling in gaps, or working on my Galoob/BCA/OSFTM collections.

I think Mattel’s in kind of a rough spot. They’ve had the license for 15 years and there’s just not a lot of lineups left they can put out that really wow the consumer. Seems they’ve went the route of offering more niche characters and attires as of late which I personally love but I just don’t know how many other people get super excited about the Sultan or workout gear/japanese hogans or street gear hall and nash again. It’s a tricky license to hold because these are real people they’re making, those people can leave the company and you just can’t make them anymore. If you’re hasbro you never have to worry about spiderman having issues with his creative and jumping to DC. Obviously the part choices need to be addressed, there’s no reason for that eddie or kurt to look the way they do for a $30+ figure. I’m just not too confident in the future lineups for classic character collectors outside of steiners and dudleys but what’s left after that?

Nah, I just got back in from a long layoff. Sold all my Jakks for way too cheap in a garage sale 100 years ago and have lived with that regret for way too long.
Just reduce to what you really like and want then pass on the rest until they hit clearance.
As far as the packaging, I can't relate as an opener, but I do understand the frustrations for a MOC collector.
Hang in there and enjoy the hobby the best you can.

Sounds like you want out, which is perfectly fine. I'm perfectly happy with both the Mattel and Jazwares lines at the moment, been in on both since Day 1 and am in for the long haul.

I was on the same boat and sort of still am. I sold off like 75% of my collection. Initally, I was buying figure impulsively. Then I realized I had so much stuff that was deteriorating and taking up space so I started to collect the eras that felt the most sentimental to me. It gave me time to give my collection some space and free up my mind a bit. I now collect characters from the 90's WCW/WWF era and sprinkled in with some other characters I enjoy. I would recommend downsizing a bit, selling off some figures bit by bit and seeing how you feel. If you still think about them, then take a pause. If you don't, you'll know they were just impulsive buys. I feel like the quality with Mattel has been dropping and they keep cheapening out on figures by not giving us unique molds for characters that need them, using wrong parts, getting colors wrong, painted on skintones and the list goes on. I'm glad I'm cherry picking the line.

Nope. I'm probably the most vested in the hobby as I ever have been. Which is going on about 14 years or so

if this was a Star Wars Black Series discussion i would be all supportive of your decision; HOWEVER this is mattel wwe and honestly i think they typically do a few waves of stinkers and then they come back strong with really cool character choices and attires.
as someone who went through what you are feeling TWICE----and sold my collections TWICE, here i am making a collection for a THIRD time and believe me brother, it gets better. dont ever sell and dont ever give up.

I’ve been collecting since 1989 with no signs of slowing down. The only thing that keeps me from buying as much is when there are less pre-Attitude era legends, since I tend to stop with the New Generation.
Being a strictly loose collector, the new boxes don’t bother me, but I do dislike anything that keeps me from being able to examine the entire paint job on the figure.

2019-2021 was a great time to be a seller. Now, not so much.

I get it, but I look at it another way. I have been here since day 1 with Mattel (and Jakk's before that) so I am basically all caught up. Which means as we go along, less for me to buy.
I am not one to get every Roman/Seth/Becky/etc. version of current wrestlers, so a lot of the current wrestlers can be skipped. The various legends are hit or miss to me, so I look at it as saving money.
Everyone collects differently, but like most above have said, I would not recommend selling your collection unless you are absolutely 100% certain you will NEVER get back into it.

Don’t sell. Just wait a year to see how you feel. You have so many cool pieces probably that you can look at and fondle.
Try to change the way you do the hobby. Don’t worry about collecting new pieces and try doing something cool with the pieces you have. For example, I like setting up arenas and dioramas and taking pictures of my collection. If you’re an unopened collector, maybe set up a mock toy aisle to display your collection as a new project.
Just try to find new ideas to do something enjoyable with the collection you have instead of burning the hobby completely because there’s nothing you want to buy.
