I just watched it again for the first time in many years last night, and gotta say... I do love the Diesel era of that Rumble. The fans chanting his name "Diesel" too was quite awesome. He was pretty much acting as a baby face during that entire time when eliminating people too.
Also....
Lex Luger... Bret Hart... Shawn Michaels.... and Headshrinker Fatu?!?!
Did anyone else find that to be, strange?? Like out of all guys for the final four, Fatu?! Not Bigelow, not Crush, not even Savage. But a guy who is in a mid card tag team.

Big Daddy Coolamania was runnin' wild! Great showcase for em no doubt
And yeah Fatu def doesnt scream final 4.I like the sound of Bam Bam in there near the end. Wouldve made a nice obstacle for both Bret/Lex to eliminate

I also noticed that Big Daddy Cool was just starting to grow out the mullet here but kept his hair still puffed up and pressed back, it made for an awesome looking hair style at the time on him.
Also noticed his hair and goatee was brown here, not black like it became in 1995 when the WWF was running on Diesel fuel.

A very good Rumble, underrated tbh. I gotta rewatch it.
I'd say it was better than 93, WAY better than 95/96 lol, MUCH better than 99 hahaa.

I know Diesel was in the talks behind the scenes prior to this for that big push but man Vince hearing those cheers had to make em say in his head right then and there''we have our guy!''
Him on commentary acknowledging the fans chanting his name speaks volumes when he's a heel. Normally they would ignore stuff like that

Fatu was strange as one of the last four indeed. Looking at it retrospectively, Vince tried him with many gimmicks until Rikishi caught on. Maybe it was a trial run to see how Fatu would mix with some of the top boys and gauge fan reaction?

A really good rumble match, also a good PPV overall. Yep, Fatu was an odd choice. To me, I like the idea of Crush. They were trying to push him as a big heel at the time, him being in the final 4 with Bret, Lex, and HBK, would have been good for his push. If not Crush, Bam Bam would have made a great choice as well. The only other person at the time that probably could have been a possibility would have been Tatanka. Him being eliminated by Lex would have been a great start to his heel turn later in the year.

I'm up to RR97 in my binge watching of past Royal Rumbles. So far, for the 90s, I have the 1994 Rumble as #4, behind 1992, 1990, and 1991. Ahead of 1996, 1993, and 1995.

But, I'll see.

Fatu was also in the final four in 96 but it's said Austin was supposed to be the one but something about too much baby oil on someone or the ropes and he got eliminated too quick (by Fatu).
I also heard Borga was supposed to get the mass eliminations spot but since he wasn't there, Diesel got it. Definitely much better choice. But crazy how much changed in two PPVs. As he was the first to be eliminated at Survivor Series, I figured Diesel was going nowhere. And I remember my father and my friend marking for him at Rumble. I know a lot of people did. He gets crapped on for a lackluster title run but his 1994 shows why WWF got behind him.
Virgil tried to get some offense in but Nash wasn't having it and belted him at one point before eliminating him.

I rewatch 97 & 92 all the time tbh, you can watch the full matches on WWEs YouTube. 90,91,92 are the top 3 Rumbles of the 90s easily. I'd put 97 at 4th, 94 at 5th and 93 at 6th. 98 gotta be 7th place & 95,96,99 are all in last place lol. Pure trash.

I like the idea of Fatu in final 4 because it shows anyone can win it or be in contention

Wrong, good buddy.
The final 6 in 96 were HBK, Diesel, Kama, Droese, Yankem and Bulldog. They all kind of went out at around the same time so I am not sure who the final 4 actually were right now off the top of my head. But it definitely wasn't Fatu.

I hated and I mean hated the ending of this! I appreciate how good Bret and Lex made it look, but it made zero sense to me as a kid and even less sense now! Why did they not just restart the match with Bret and Lex. It was such an anticlimactic way to end a Rumble. Bret 100 percent should have won the Rumble in my opinion.
The actual card was pretty entertaining, Owens heel turn was awesome.

Just watched it recently, the final 4 were HBK, Diesel, Kama and Bulldog. Shawn eliminated Bulldog, then Diesel eliminated Kama, when Diesel turned around after eliminating Kama, Shawn super kicked him out of the rumble match to win.

Virgil tried to get some offense in but Nash wasn't having it and belted him at one point before eliminating him. Austin is the one who said it: In fact, he was supposed to be one of the last four men standing along with the eventual winner, Shawn Michaels. But there was a mishap and Austin ended up getting eliminated much earlier than planned.
"I was supposed to be the fourth guy left in the ring," Austin told Ryan Satin. "And Rikishi or somebody gave me a clothesline and the ropes were so baby oiled up from everybody wearing baby oil, I slipped. And there was a bunch of guys in the ring and I went out way early. And I hit the ground and you know I'm still pretty new in the company at this time, Ryan. But they're gonna try to, you know, keep me in the Rumble, so they're giving me a little bit of a push and I blew it."
Read More: www.wrestlinginc.com/1100463/stone-cold-steve-austins-accidental-elimination-in-the-1996-royal-rumble/I've also heard that about Borga for RR94. Back when Vince was still thinking of putting the belt on Lex at WM10, it was believed that Borga would be his first main feud for the belt afterwards. Pushing him in the Rumble match definitely helps that theory out. Him being that dominate at the Rumble would definitely push him into contention for the WWF title once it was back on a babyface.
