What do you think about Re-Releases?

Great for new collectors and folks who missed out. I buy some, but not all.

I don't care about anyone's grails, resale value, feelings, etc.

These are toys. Who cares if you can't sell your old RSC exclusive for as much on ebay.

I'd rather me and thousands of others have a shot at a figure to add to our collections.

If you're investing in toys and getting mad that a re-release affects your value then I have 0 sympathy for you.

i mean mattel can re-issue the whole line with new features for all i care and ill cherry pick the figures that i want.

my personal issue with re-issues and re-releases comes in when they plug them into a Build a Figure or a Build a Gimmick line. like oh, we have this new exciting line and we have a build a figure product here but 2/4 figures you need to buy we have already released and many collectors already have them, but we gave them new features or changed the formula a bit so it makes sense to buy them again.


i feel like OPs question is more regarding the vault and elite GH line and i think its silly to invest in action figures. i have been a lifelong collector---but literally at the end of the day they are plastic figures and should never be more than double the retail price. everyone has hobbies and art is whatever someone is willing to pay for it but if you have a SES punk in your collection just be proud of that fact. dont sit there and try to act like the figure you paid $30 from ringside with shipping is literally actually worth $400 and your status is elevated by owning such a piece and mattel re-releasing it has toppled your reality. people get silly with their hobbies and even more so with their money when they are passionate. im sure you could go to 90% of people who own that punk figure and tell them 'hey that figure is worth $400 on the market" and they would flood the market with their toys because they are not in the trenches enough to realize how much some people would pay for it now.


i guess back to my point it does suck as a consumer that if you have all of these original figures and buy the new ones---no longer need or want the older versions and go to sell them to re-coup a little bit on the investment and you cant get anything back. the market is now flooded with BOTH brand new versions from the manufacturer and older versions from everyone unloading their own. its a great market for new collectors as they get the best of both worlds.

i think one thing to remember is that its a bit of a twinkie on a stick conundrum. kudos to mattel for constantly trying to improve the line and make the product better for us but----take hogan for example. we had a good offering of hogan figures already in our collections, mattel pumped out some new stuff and then ALL OF THE SUDDEN now mattel has a new skintone for hogan and a new specific torso for hogan and new headsculpts for hogan. all of his previous figures are completely outdated by now-even the wrestlemania heritage one we got no less than two years ago.
all it takes is for mattel to discover or implement a new technology and all the sudden all of our Rock figures are obselete, all of our Stone Cold figures are obselete, all of our Taker figures are obselete, ya know. and with the implementation of pinless joints they are making it harder for us to customize or undo some of their oversights in design.

It's a great thing to give people another chance to buy a figure - and in most cases a better version. Updated elbow joints, TruFX scans. Win/Win!

I'd honestly rather see deep cuts getting made vs. re-releases but I get their business approach to them. Good for the new comers to catch up with what they want and hopefully lowers the cost of the originals so they have a choice of which version they want.

Since nowadays most figures being re released now are updated with new tech, that's cool and welcoming.

But, re releasing figures from last 2 or even 3 years seems pretty dumb.

I admittedly railed against the re-release of Hart UE that I was fortunate enough to find at retail years ago. The re-release was the exact same, even down to the copyright date! And not even from a "it hurts the value perspective" because I couldn't care less about that. I just wanted to be able have proof that I found a tough and sought-after figure in the wild!
However, I am all for them now because they are clearly marked and differentiated enough that they shouldn't bother anyone. Case-in-point, my Rock Amazon UE Series 6!
Whenever The Rock and Batista GH UEs came out, I sent Steve a thank you on his Q&A page because those are how re-releases should be done. Similar to the regular release for those that missed out and different enough for those like me that has The Rock from Amazon that I can still hang my hat on! It's a win-win for all.

I love it because it makes the people who try to sell the old ones for like 600 dollars upset

Makes things seem less special. I lost a lot of interest because of it.
