Alright, I had this debate in school Friday, and it was brought up in that KKK dude's topic. So I wanted to discuss it seriously. Without racism please.
In the United States, should people who come here to live the American Dream have to learn English?
America doesn't really have a national language. Everyone is just sort of mixed in. I don't think they should learn English, I mean...people move to other countries, FROM HERE who speak ENGLISH and refuse to learn that language. English speaking people seem to be the most arrogant. So What do you think?

I think that if you move to another country of your own FREE WILL....then you should have to adapt the language of that place.
If I ever move to France, I'll learn French, I don't EXPECT to get to France and have everybody fluent in English and ready to communicate with me.
Just like I should NOT be having trouble finding a job because every place I apply to would rather hire somebody who can also speak Spanish.
You can't do anything about the illegals, because they aren't supposed to be here anyway, but in order to gain OFFICIAL citizenship, you should have to be able to pass like 4th grade english or something.

I think it is up to them. They want to learn it, great. They do not want to, then that is fine. They will have trouble getting work, but whatever floats there boat.

I for one think, if you're gonna live in a country, where the vast majority of people speak English, then hell yes you should learn to speak English. It's really not that hard.
Like someone said in that other thread; If I were to move to Mexico to work, of course I'd learn the Spanish language.
That's not healthy.

They come here, they learn English. We shouldn't pick up their language. Exactly. I have a spanish speaking girl who randomly came to our school last year who speaks spanish and nothing but it. She goes into the spanish teacher's room after every period for him to deceipher what is what. Why the hell does she get special treatment? |

Its basically a majority opinion that spanish speaking people coming to america should learn English. Like said before, I wouldnt go to live and work in some other country and speak english and expect special treatment.

Nope. They shouldn't be forced to learn it, but if they choose not to do it by their own will, its their own fault when they struggle.

I'm I the only one remembering that some of our ancestors came here and killed a ton of native American's?
By you're theory of "move here, learn how we talk," shouldn't our language be Navajo, Chickasaw, Acoma, Aztec, Pueblo, or some other native tongue?
Fact is, is that even though a lot of those people who do NOT use english, sometimes know just enough to pass tests. I live in New Mexico, I'm not fluent in spanish, but I know enough to get around. Depending on where I live, I'd learn the second language that is most commonly used. Is it perfect? No, but maybe I want the better job, and I should adapt or settle for second best.

I see what your saying, but i dont think the Mexicans/Cubans are gonna invade us anytime soon...And if they do we'll get most of them comming across the border and in the water. We may not have a "national" language but when 99% of the people here speak English and 1% doesnt wouldnt it be easier for the 1% to learn then then 99%? I mean do you want your hard earned tax money going to give people Spanish lessons?? I didnt think so |
