I'm I the only one remembering that some of our ancestors came here and killed a ton of native American's? By you're theory of "move here, learn how we talk," shouldn't our language be Navajo, Chickasaw, Acoma, Aztec, Pueblo, or some other native tongue? Fact is, is that even though a lot of those people who do NOT use english, sometimes know just enough to pass tests. I live in New Mexico, I'm not fluent in spanish, but I know enough to get around. Depending on where I live, I'd learn the second language that is most commonly used. Is it perfect? No, but maybe I want the better job, and I should adapt or settle for second best. I see what your saying, but i dont think the Mexicans/Cubans are gonna invade us anytime soon...And if they do we'll get most of them comming across the border and in the water. We may not have a "national" language but when 99% of the people here speak English and 1% doesnt wouldnt it be easier for the 1% to learn then then 99%? I mean do you want your hard earned tax money going to give people Spanish lessons?? I didnt think soYes, I do. My tax dollars already go toward schools, where they're supposed to be teaching things to help kids and teens in life, if that means that it teaches them Spanish, to help them get better paying jobs, than so be it. Hell, where I live it's already in the curriculum, my four year old niece is in pre-k, and can already hold a conversation in Spanish, something I wish I'd have learned when I was that age. Edit: Some people are saying, " come to our country, learn english," and that they " wouldn't move to another country, like France, or Mexico without learning their language." - But are these people forgetting who our country is made up of? It's made up of Polish, Asian, French, Spanish, Mexican, Jamaican, African, Irish, Swedish, Muslim, etc etc etc, ALL of which have their own cultures and languages that they have a right to hold onto if they want. 'Land of the free' my ass, you guys want it to be, "land of the, do things our way so it's more convenient to me because I'm to lazy to put forth the effort to learn, or leave."

I think that if you move to another country of your own FREE WILL....then you should have to adapt the language of that place. If I ever move to France, I'll learn French, I don't EXPECT to get to France and have everybody fluent in English and ready to communicate with me. Just like I should NOT be having trouble finding a job because every place I apply to would rather hire somebody who can also speak Spanish. You can't do anything about the illegals, because they aren't supposed to be here anyway, but in order to gain OFFICIAL citizenship, you should have to be able to pass like 4th grade english or something. I couldn't possibly agree more. It's ridiculous that we are expected to learn a new language for immigrants and illegal aliens.

Hey if they can survive in this country without learning the language, then more power to them, but they CAN'T get mad when I have no clue what they're saying at my job. I get people all of the time coming to me speaking, Spanish, Haitian, and several different Euro-languages (mainly Russian) and they have the nerve to tell me "You should learn how to speak (insert their language)". For that, I should be allowed to legally stab them in their throat without punishment. It's just rude. It's not my fault you got a Betamax copy of An American Tale back home and thought your trip to America would be as whimsical and have a happy ending like the little mouse had.

Okay, most shows on television are in English, but you do know that most providers and television sets have language filters too right?

Yeah. I do.
I was in Publix (a supermarket here in Florida) behind this Spanish lady who didn't know a word of English.
Her 8 year old son had to translate what the cashier was saying. After that got sorted out the dumb bitch swiped her ATM Debit card backwards 15 times before they explained what was going on.
So yeah. They should. If they don't they should leave. I had to learn French...they should have to learn another language too.

I have no problem with that. If you and the person you're talking to speak some other language than english and you want to have a conversation in that language that's fine with me. My problem is when you come around demanding that I speak Spanish or some other language so I can talk to you. Or when you just won't even make the effort to try to learn English. The predominant language in this country is English. If you want to conduct business in this country and be sucessfull you have to speak English.

I understand the whole idea of " if they struggle then let them" but the truth is that for the most part they really dont. Their "dream" is to move to america get a job and live a better life.( and if you're illeagal and drive a new frod explorer i'd say mission accomplished) And thats becoming more possible because there's more of them to do so with. I'm not complianing or anything, i'm just saying, wouldnt it be alot easier to move to like haiti*,france,or china if we(english speaking americans) had our own society whithin theirs that enabled us to not have to conform to the lifestyle completly? Thats what they have and thats why they dont feel like they have to learn a lick of english because theres always thier buddy right their who know just a little bit more english thatn he does to help him get by. But as far as actually answering the question goes it come dow to this, The most of us cant and wont understand you so by default you'll have to understand us. Alittle selfish? heh it the US, whats new?

Well, mainly what I'm talking about is when they talk so friggen loud. It's almost like they're yelling just to be heard. it's rather annoying.

we've accepted the fact that they're going to come over here & there's nothing we can do to stop them, but then by not learning english it's like they're flaunting their illegality (i don't think that's actually a word, but you know what i mean). we threw them a bone by looking the other way on our immigration policies, the least they could do is learn some english in return, it's the polite thing to do.
