I was just looking through the thread with the biggest crowd reactions and most of them had Austin in them. I was then looking at some of his recent returns which are always dead. Austin was so over with the crowd from '97 until his heel turn in 2001 IMO.
It wasn't the heel turn, but it was the way he was acting with Angle and McMahon. He was not seen as a rebel, but as a joke. it might have been funny but after this heel turn, he never did receive the same reaction from the crowd. Just look at the difference aswell... Look at how pissed off and rebelous Austin was in 1999/2001. Then look at early 2002 when he starts the stupid catchphrase "What" and and always had more of a comedy mixed with his character.
It doesn't even matter anymore as he doesn't wrestle, but his downfall was his heel turn in 2001, after this he was never the same old Stone Cold everyone loved back in the day. So I wanted to get some of your opinons, if you agree, disagree? And why do you think he doesn't get the same reaction he use to get years ago?

He said on his DVD that it was his idea to go with the comedy acts because he was injured.
He is not getting the same reaction now when he did years ago because people aren't into wrestling much anymore.

He is not getting the same reaction now when he did years ago because people aren't into wrestling much anymore. Not just now, even in late 2001/2002. He wasn't getting the same reaction until 2003 when he came back to fight Bishoff. He was never the same after his heel turn. I guess I always liked the rebelous bad ass instead of the comedy bad ass..

I think its because most fans dont know who he is. I mean only the older fans cheer for him, the kids are behind that Cena guy now. Thats what I think

I think it boils down to the fact that only 50% TOPS (probably a crapload less) saw Austin wrestle. And at least half of those people are sick of the repetitive cameos that he keeps doing. I think he was losing steam in like 2002 because he was sort of kicked to the curb. Guys like Rock, Hogan, Triple H, and even Jericho were on a lot more than he was.

I liked him when he first turned heel in 2001 before he started becoming a joke. Even then I still found him funny. I guess its just because hes getting older and not everyone knows who he is anymore.

I agree with you on that one. He wasn't really a in your face kind of guy after that whole Invasion thing. But his comedy makes me laugh sometimes.

His hell turn when he sided with McMahon didn't destroy his career, but it didn't help anything either. I did enjoy him turning on the WWF to side with WCW during the InVasion angle though. He is not getting the same reaction now when he did years ago because people aren't into wrestling much anymore.

The only reason he turned heel was because he was so stale/over exposed as a face. So no I don't agree with what your saying. In 2001 as a face Austin had run his course. He turned heel because of THAT fact.

wanna know why?: Time
Stone cold as a rebellious dude who doesnt give a crap about anything any raises hell, gets old. if he kept it up till today, ur talking a decade. he would be bood out of buildings if he kept that straight up rebel act his entire career. they need to keep having characters refreshed.
Taker had no choice but to become the American Bad Ass in 2000/01 because they didnt wanna ware out his deadman persona. he said so himself.
Cena's rapping thug gimmick was getting stale. so he got a new persona.
but they all still did keep elements from their old gimmicks. Austin still today is that same hellraiser, but has comedy in (which never gets old) his act so it stays fresh. during Takers ABA, he never gave up his tombstone and still had that huge intimidation factor. Cena still wears shorts to the ring and stuff.
like adding new to the old.

his 'what' thing furthered his character and became the most popular catchphrase of all time since 'Woooo.' I believe austins best year was 2001, I didnt agree with the crying stuff, but the other stuff he did was gold.

Are you crazy? Austin was pure genius as a heel. Watch these:

Austin is my all time favorite. When he turned heel it really left a bitter taste. I loved the comedy segments, I actually laughed at them, but seeing the once rebellious badass turn into Vince's best bud really diluted his character.

I thought the heel run with Vince & Angle was by far the best stuff he ever did to be honest. He played the cowardly heel to perfection. The thing that hurt him was the terribly lame build up to his last WM match with Rocky, this huge match & all the writers could come up with was Austin's wife was going to manage The Rock? Terrible!
