I feel we missed something by not having a thread for IC, so lets rectify that with Marvel's super-big-awesome-tastic mega-event. I think we can add any CW tie-ins here, too.
And lets just assume that spoilers will be contained. It also helps for those not reading ALL the tie-ins to maybe catch something they missed. Kinda like DC's "Crisis Counseling" page.
Anyway, I picked it up because I was curious, even though most of it had already been spoiled. I did like Cap's fight on the HeliCarrier. I will say that, if this event makes new readers, they'll probably look into Cap's adventures. It's good to redefine him for a current era. I dont like a little of its politiking. I dont like Bush, and this is clearly a story influenced by world events, but its something I hope that presents both sides as rational so that believing in one or the other doesnt mean you like "the bad guys". Though its obvious that Cap's side is the more just one.

Honestly, I just got into Civil War this week, having only read one of the Spiderman and FF4 issues. Could someone provide a brief update as to what has happened so far? It's been revealed there is a secret group who meet up to discuss all the big things. The members are: Mr Fantastic Sub-Mariner Xavier Iron Man Doctor Strange Black Bolt (Black Panther turned down the the offer) They are also behind Hulk being blasted off into space a few months back starting the Planet Hulk arc. Spider-Man and Iron Man have begun a close friendship, leading to the arc you saw. The government are starting the act due to Avengers Disassembed, HoM (Although they don't know about it, they know about the mass panic of 99% of mutants waking up without the powers) etc. Oh and Thor's hamour returning. So far, that's about all we know are connected to the event.

I thought the "Buy all these other books because I say so" thing at the end was really poorly done. It's one thing to list the issues that are crossovers. But saying "You should buy the new Claremont/Miller Wolverine trade because Wolverine was in this issue" is stupid. If people are picking up Civil War as their first Marvel comic, you want them to buy more current issues, not trades of stories from 20 years ago. Quite frankly, the books today aren't probably going to look as good by comparison.
As for the story, I was very underwhelmed. Not that it was a bad issue, becuase it wasn't. But due to the Marvel hype machine, I didn't get any new information. The first 7 pages were released months ago. We knew Iron Man and Cap would be on opposite sides, and we were fairly certain Cap would be anti-registration and IM would be pro. That's all this issue did. If we wouldn't have known any of that stuff before the issue came out, it would have been a lot better. Marvel really shot itself in the foot there.

The only prelude I read was the Avengers: Illuminati one-shot, which I thought was great. Overall, still wasn't big on Civil War though. But some friends recommended it to me, so I bought issue #1 and was pleasantly surprised. I won't be picking up every piece of it, but am very interested in seeing how it unfolds.

I haven't followed Marvel much lately. House of M seemed like a waste of time and money. But it was part of an intriguing chain of events that the Marvel Universe has been undergoing in recent years (like DC's huge arcs in the mid-90's). I will admit, Civil War has me intrigued. I picked up the first issue and really enjoyed it. I loved how the sh*t hit the fan with the New Warriors. I was also surprised as to who was killed. Not huge characters, but ones that have some history in Marvel.
But I am weary of Civil War as well. In recent years there has been a huge erosion of quality in Marvel comics, mostly stemming from the writing and overall story directions. My biggest gripe is that stories will begin with a fury that gets me really excited, then fizzles out in stupid plot twists or Deux Ex Machina solutions. For example:
The Zero Tolerance storyline in the late 90's began brilliantly. It seemed the war between humans and mutants had begun. Mutants were on the run from shape-shifting Sentinels led by Bastion. The X-men were apprehended. Bad things were hapening everywhere. Then in a miraculous twist, everything returned to a status quo. Oh no, the X-Mansion was gutted! So F'N what?
That huge Apocalypse storyline in 2000, years in the making, supposedly Apocalypse's monumental conquering of Earth. Um, why did he need Skrulls? And that who kidnapping 12 psychic mutants to tear open the space time continuum to conquer all of time... wasn't that a plot from the X-men cartoon from a few years earlier? And then we find out that all along Apocalypse was just an old man in a robot suit. LAME!
The Age of Apocalpyse 10th anniversary. I loved the original AoA, in my opinion one of the greatest things Marvel has ever done. I didn't even bother picking up the new series. It was a travesty. They turned Magneto evil... why? What good reason was there, that he is a bud guy in the regular Marvel Universe? This was a different man with a different life, with a wife and child. He won his war and then for no reason is evil. Right.
And what the hell is with all this clone BS with Spider-man? I could go on and on.
I hope Civil War turns out better. I hope this is the turning point in the modern Marvel Universe, where they won't go back to some lame ass status quo and actually take a page from DC and do something new.

I agree about House of M and what Marvel has done lately. I really enjoyed the first issue of Civil War, especially the scenes with Captain America and S.H.I.E.L.D. I just hope that they don't let me down.

anyone else get the feeling that bullseye is daredevil? Can't be. Bullseye is in prison with Matt. So, what does everyone think so far? I think it rocks! I've loved every Civil War issue (Main or tie in) so far. I can't wait for the next issue, Spider-Man could be announcing his ID... unless he pretends to be Ben Reilly

I heard this crazy idea that Tony Stark is under DD's mask so that Civil War has an "outie" in case they dont like how it ends.

I've read the first issue, and a couple of the tie-in issues. I'll probably stay with it, as long as it doesn't get overly preachy.

Frontline was great. I very strongly get the feeling that Spidey isn't going to reveal his identity. I like that this ish was sort of a behind-the-scenes of the last issue of Amazing.

I have to say, Spider-Man's accounts suck! He has no rent, food costs etc. cause Tony pays for all that. He should have the insurance money for what was lost in the fire. He has three jobs (Teacher, Photographer and Tony Stark's sidekick) His wife his a model Yet over the past few months he's got just over £10,000? What does Spidey spend it on? He has no time for hobbies.

Before he got organic webbing, he must have spent a fortune making the stuff. He lost his teaching job for the summer, MJ hasn't been modeling, and he hasn't done much photography work for a long time. And the insurance money would have gone to replace the things he lost in the apartment fire. The insurance money for the house would have gone to Aunt May.

It was just funny looking at that and remembering Marvel classing him as have 3 jobs.
