Hey Everyone,
Now this thread has probably been done in the past, so if it is recent, and I missed it, I am sorry.
Moving on, I am still in school and just turned 16. I have never really "came out" with myself being a wrestling fan to my mates. This being people tend to always look down on it. If it is ever mentioned, the response is always so very negative. Most of the time people question why people would watch wrestling, and the whole idea behind it being, "fake." If anyone ever came out, it is obvious they would be mocked and "ripped" into for doing so.
Now, I by no means take this to heart, but it makes me wonder why Wrestling has this sort off reputation?
Interested to hear what some of you have to say.

Wrestling's popularity (as with most anything) comes in waves. When it's popular, obviously it's cool to watch wrestling. When it's mainstream popularity dwindles, it basically is seen as "kid stuff" because people tend to associate liking something with a time in their life. However, this mentality is more childish than the things they claim to be childish. As any parent will tell you, having a kid is a great excuse to start buying the "kid stuff" you still love. For instance, my son and I watch Animaniacs all the time, and, while I can give you an entire dissertation on why it is one of the greatest modern comedies cartoon or otherwise, it's still considered "kid stuff."
As far as the "it's fake" argument, expect that to become more and more commonly thrown around as MMA rises in popularity. Personally, I find MMA barbaric. It wreaks of the days of gladiators, where men and women would flock to watch men fight to the death. If anything, wrestling is, in my opinion, superior because it's fake. It shows empathy. It means that you prefer your violence to be fictitious. (Yes, I know they get hurt, but the ultimate goal is to not cause an injury.)
Also, the "it's fake" argument never made sense to me because, with the exception of Milli Vanilli, what other entertainment gets berated for being less than honest? Movies, books, TV, etc. Nearly all great works of storytelling are fiction, which, by definition, means fake.
In all honesty, wrestling is art, but I'll save that argument for another day.
I know it's a cliché, but insecure people put down others to feel better about themselves. Ultimately, this is the case for wrestling and wrestling fans alike.

I suppose it is just that different people like different things, Like how most people I know like Football, (which I don't) and if they ever say anything, I just wave it off. However, if somebody refers to it as being "Fake" I will say something. Nothing is "Fake".

I know it's a cliché, but insecure people put down others to feel better about themselves. That goes far beyond wrestling. Why do people look down on music produced by women like Ke$ha, Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj? Why do people look down on celebrities for being human and not living up to some expectation they've conjured up? Why do people look down on *insert thing here*?

Let's face it, there are some pretty ridiculous wrestling fans out there (not there aren't ridiculous fans of other sports, activites, etc.) but between people believing that HHH is really going to murder Orton (basically getting super into every storyling) or bringing every replica belt they own to every event, I can see why wrestling fans have the reputation that they do.
As far as everyone non-fan saying it's "fake". That really pisses me off. I've been wrestling for over 11 years now and I would never use the term "fake". What I have noticed is that anyone who uses that term has never actually entered a ring and hit the ropes or taken a bump. Anyone who has, would never say that.
Btw, if anyone every drops an f bomb on wrestling, mention how other sports are fake and watch them get all grumpy. It's fantastic!

I think the fake thing comes from the early days of wrestling. It started as a circus act and it was intended for people to think it was real. That lasted all the way up until the time people got smart enough to ask questions. Around that time, the curtain started to get pulled back a little revealing it was a work. Also, with it becoming more popular, more people had to train and learn secrets of the trade. People started realizing it was a work but there were still others that thought it was real. Also, promotions still presented it as real. For some reason that feeling stuck around and non-fans continue to think fans are dumb for thinking its real even though we don't.
Bobby Heenan had a great response to that. He said "People always talk about how wrestling is fake. Show me someone who thinks wrestling is real and I'll tell you to run as far away from that nut job as you can."

This is a really loaded question.
I think it's because of what mainstream wrestling has become. Non-wrestling fans look at the WWE and see a product that's incredibly overproduced, incredibly cheesy, and they don't appreciate the action in the ring because it's either uninteresting, the "characters" wrestling are cheesy or uninteresting, or, frankly, they can't get pass the fact that the results of the matches are pre-determined.
We're in an era where the UFC and the NFL are offering hard hitting and, more importantly, "real" action. The WWE looks like a cheesy soap opera when compared to those two "real" organizations, so why should non-wrestling fans deviate their attention from the UFC/NFL to watch something that is lame in comparison?
Yes, wrestling's popularity does come in waves. That's why the WWE needs to adapt to the times.

They look down because getting punched in the top of the head hurts a lot worse than 4 knuckles to the face.

I never use the term "fake" if anything I prefer scripted

Maybe because Pro Wrestling is really to be honest the #1 sport in the world. I remember when people talked negative about WWE and compared it to UFC and now look where that's at. Nothing to compare anymore.

Because we watch oily men in the underwear hug and roll around moaning and yelling in a ring?

It's because no one understands that there is wrestling and sports entertainment. When someone that isn't a fan or follower hears the word wrestling, they immediately think of WWE and that it isn't wrestling and it's fake. WWE is sports entertainment with real risks, but it's entertainment. It's just like a regular TV show. Wrestling is the stuff you find at the more independent promotions.
People always think they're right and will never admit they're wrong.

Because we watch oily men in the underwear hug and roll around moaning and yelling in a ring? That argument doesn't quite work considering people love UFC, or, as I call it, Extreme Cuddling.

I don't care for her music either but I'm not going to crusade against her like a lot of people do when they dislike someone. It's not worth my time or energy to be upset or hateful.
