Perhaps it was Jakks' subtle way of saying "This figure is a piece of crap." Or you could re-mask this shameful figure with a bedpan, to help it hide its failure.

When I first saw Mattel's Kamala figure, I was impressed. The box art grabbed my attention, and the accessories looked top notch. Then, when I finally bought it and got it outta the box, I was totally blown away. This figure is still my favorite Mattel, his expression and details are just so perfectly captured. I got excited to see Steele when he was coming out, but was a lot less impressed when I saw the figure in person. For some reason, it just didn't seem as well done to me. So, I stuck with my Jakks Steele, and have that fine lookin' Kamala standing next to him.

Last night I took my brother out for his bachelor party to a local area promotion known as Prestige Wrestling. We had a lot of fun cheering and hollering, and the card featured the following:
Prestige Wrestling Championship Match "Filthy" Tom Lawlor (Champion) vs MV Young (Challenger) Singles MatchChavo Guerrero vs Ethan HD Hermiston Street Fight"The Devil Himself" Drexl vs Tyler Bateman Singles MatchBull James vs SCHAFF First Round - Prestige Wrestling Tag Team Championship Tournament MatchTeam C4 vs The Strays First Round - Prestige Wrestling Tag Team Championship Tournament MatchThe Voros Twins vs The Eh Team Singles MatchLeva Bates vs Bambi Hall Singles MatchMike Santiago vs Sonico Singles MatchSimon Grimm vs Julian Whyt
Others here may know some of these folks. Chavo is the only one I knew as a big name from WWE, but the others all gave 100% for this show just like he did. I'm a big fan of territory era wrestling, and I suspect this may be what a territory promotion must have been like during that time. Some local heroes, some good wrestlers from out of town, and some nasty heels. The crowd interaction was crucial, as it was only a few hundred fans, but they were dedicated, and were enjoying the matches. Anybody else here a Prestige fan? I know I just became one! I'll see if I can post some photos I took of the action a little later, too.

Mickey Goldmill from the Rocky series. I didn't even realize it was Burgess Meredith who played him, it's been so long since I watched Rocky.

I've got to send out a big thanks to joes7164, he's traded me for a lot of good fodder that's gone into my customs. And I am glad you like the work, GoldenHulk. I enjoy trying to bring out some of the more obscure or forgotten faces of wrestling's past. My next figure's taking it even further back. This one's Maurice Tillet, the French Angel!

Most definitely your inspiration, Three Thirty Four! I had seen pictures of Curry when I'd be googling for images of other heels of that era, but until you put a name to him, didn't even know who he was. But the eyebrows! Never before, and never again I'd wager will we see a face like that in wrestling. And it seems his antics matched. To quote his chapter in the book The Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame, The Heels, "He'd find a mark in the audience, take their shoe off, bring it into the ring and hit the other wrestler with it." Plus he was the original Texas brass knuckles champion, from what I've read.

Well, nobody ever gave me an award for speed in producing a custom. Wild Bull Curry finally makes his debut! This is effing brilliant! What head did you use? Thank you, I'm glad you like it! This was originally a head from a Super Crazy.

I bought an old Pyrex baking dish at one of the local thrift shops, and then just boil water in my tea kettle or a pan on the stove. I toss the figure in, and pour the boiling water over them. Let 'em soak a few minutes, and usually things are pretty bendy. Mind you, it's Jakks taking this punishment most often, but Mattels seem to react well, too. The hardest part is usually pouring the boiling water out of the figures while hurrying to work with them at their hottest.

Milliput two part putty is a popular material, though I still like to use JB Weld Plastic Weld putty stick myself. I've thought about using the JB weld plastic putty, how well does it work? Generally it works quite easily. A little sticky on your fingers once you get it mixed up, but good and sturdy once hardened. I usually use it to rough in the shape I want, and then use a mini-rotary tool to hone down the fine details. It will hold details you add when working with it, and feels like plastic when cured.

I can certainly understand this sentiment, I feel much the same. Wresting as spectacle is what sets it apart from the day to day shuffle. I liked some of the over-the-top gimmicks. George the Animal Steele, Kamala, even Tugboat. Of course, not everybody's a fan of this sort of thing, but it adds some flair to the matches. One of my favorite crazy gimmick moments has to be when Kamala ripped a fire door off of its hinges in the back and ran out to the ring to attack the Moon Dogs with it, since they'd already been delivering a lot of brutal chair shots, and he wanted to set himself apart. Crazy stuff like this probably isn't as likely to fly today, and I miss that kind of improv.

Looks like you're right! The original Calhoun was an American wrestler who debuted in the 50's, and got his moniker by pitching full bales of hay into a high loft, as the story goes. The Giant Haystacks was a British wrestler, and cribbed his ring name from the original, until modifying it to the Giant Haystacks later on. I'm not sure if the Brit did any hay bale chucking, though.

The never-produced young Andre the Giant in red. The prototype was probably the best Andre I've ever seen. Any pics? Is this similar to the online exclusive in I wanna say blue trunks with the fro and vest? As for my picks, agree on a lot of the 1/100 likes weasel Bobby Heenan, Bloody Terry Funk and boxing piper. I also want to finish my have at least 1 of everyone released in main RA line collection but really don’t have the time, money or huge want to hunt down Rtruth, Lillian Garcia, Jillian Hall, Colin Delaney, cherry, Hawkins and Ryder.
Ah what could have been...

Haha! I use the swipe to text feature. What a disaster! Especially considering they were exactly that, gifts, albeit not giants. In my estimation, Andre, Big Show, El Gigante & Great Khali might be the only true giants making it impossible to list ten. Maybe include the two dudes from the Oddities. Anyways I'll say.. Andre The Giant Giant Baba Yokozuna Vader Bam Bam Bigelow Earthquake Typhoon King Kong Bundy Big Show Loch Ness (from a short WCW Nitro run, was it Haystacks Calhoun, or ?!) Loch Ness, better known as the Giant Haystacks! Definitely a good pick there! I'd add Ernie Ladd to the list of giants not mentioned as yet. Big Tex McKenzie, too. Both were billed at 6'9", if that's big enough? How giant do these men need to be to be considered giant, rather than just "big men?" A lot of these names are super heavyweight territory!

I'd try spraying some test pieces with some Krylon Matte Finish, hopefully it won't repel that. When I made up decals on my inkjet printer, a few layers of the Krylon sealed them and I didn't have any running of the color.

Looks like a baby Garter Snake! This photo op couldn't have been better, it wouldn't have looked right if it'd been much older. Nice work!
