Do I really need to go back to my "You fix You" thing again? I really need to type it up somewhere so I can just cut and paste where appropriate. If you work a crappy job, that's on you. Go take some classes. Maybe start your own business. Find another job somewhere else. It isn't always easy, but it's doable. Classes cost money. Starting your own business costs even more money. I understand there are loans, but bad credit could affect that. Great, you get more money for working a better job or starting a business, who knows if that business will succeed, but then you have to pay off those loans and the new money you make goes to that. I understand you pulled yourself up, great, not everyone is able to. And it has nothing to do with not wanting to, it's about not being able to. Actually starting a business doesn't have to cost money and neither do classes. Want to start a landscaping business? All it costs is a lawnmower (which you probably already have), gas for said mower (which you probably already have) and gas for your car (which you probably already have). You can go door to door in a rich neighborhood and get a couple of houses to clean. All of a sudden you have a house cleaning business. I know of a lady who goes to garage sales and buys kids clothes for a quarter a piece, then sells it on ebay for $2 a piece. That's her business. It's a myth that a business costs a lot to start. I believe that if you really want to do something and you work your butt off for it and tough it out there's no reason why you can't do it. The problem is most people aren't willing to sacrifice in the short term to win in the long term. Look at our President-elect. Here's a black kid, raised in poverty by a single mom. Sadly, it's a common story in our country. Yet he overcame that, worked his ass off and come January 20th will be leader of the world's most powerful country. Why? Because he busted his ass and worked hard. I disagree with him on just about everything, but I have to admire his work ethic and his life story.

If someone is going back to school to get a degree to further themselves in their profession, yes, it will take a lot of money.
Those sound like good ideas for second or third jobs, but not a full time job.
I'm not talking about the kid who grows up poor, works hard and becomes something. I'm talking the middle aged person who is at a low paying job.

School doesn't have to cost that much. Go to a community college or state school. If you get a low interest loan you'll be able to pay it back easily after you graduate and get a decent job

That's if you can get a low interest loan. I'm not going to put my faith in that.

I know a lot of people who don't have the money to go to school but get loans and grants and whatnot and work hard and graduate, make money and pay back the loans ... its tough but def doable ... don't mean to sound rude, but reading this topic it seems like slappy always looks at the negative of things? why is that?

If you can get the loan or grants and if you can find a job and are able to make enough to pay it back.
Easier to be negative.

I pay a little over $1,400/semester and I go to a state university. and thats including the $300 increase for next semester to account for all the NY state budget cuts.
Even if you work minimum wage part time you will still be able to pay off a good chunk of that during the semester.

Hulkamaniac do you have a girlfriend or kids? Do you own a house or still live at home? I am single, but I do own a home. I make $35k a year more or less but because I sacrificed last year and the year before and the year before I have no debt except my house which I plan on paying off early. I'm not opposed to helping people out by teaching them what they need to do, giving them a pat on the back or a kick in the head or whatever it takes to motivate them. I just don't buy in to this mentality of "Poor me, I'm a victim. My life sucks and I just have to sit here and deal with it until someone fixes it for me." Bullcrap!

I think that's the number one reason you aren't hurting. I'm not saying you didn't work your ass off or anything but I notice it's mostly family's that are hurting. If you're single with no girlfriend or kids there is no reason you should be hurting for money. If you have a good job and have money just to spend on yourself then of course you won't feel like we are in a recession.
