I haven't watched wrestling in awhile, I even posted how ridiculous it was about a month ago. WWE and their ridiculous WWE champion.
But tonight was an amazing night for wrestling. It was the first time in about 10 years that I was flipping back and fourth through channels just to see what was happening on each show.
The 'NWO' and Bischoff know exactly how to hook viewers. They know what will make you tune in...they know how to hook you.
TNA
I was hyped to see Bret Hart on Raw, I mean..that IS a big deal. Both things that happened tonight are something that was a big deal 10+ years ago. To make fun of one or the other, fans like me had to wait a LONG time for something interesting like this.
As soon as Hogan came on screen on top of the second hour, I wasn't turning away from the show. How they handled Sean, Scott and Nash was a brilliant little twist. We have Hogan wanting to build 'another' NWO type stable, while trying to control his ex members and friends from the past.
All while that is going on, we have some interesting and fresh faces (at least for me) to see. Of course, the first match was pretty crappy, that 'cage' really needs more spaces for cameras. The guy messing up at not making it through the 'top' made me enjoy it even more. ...Why?
Because in WWE, they have to do EVERYTHING perfect. It's nice to see the alternative and see something not go 'according to plan' that's a nice little 'spice' of show..even though it's great to laugh at.
Seeing people like the 'Nasty boys' 'Venis' 'Flair' and many others is the reason I stopped watching WWF back in 96. All my favorite characters were going to the 'other' show and acting like real people. Allthough I can't say TNA have amazing actors or anything, they're at least trying to be decent and know that their fanbase is a bit older and more interested in adult things.
There were a TON of commercials, but there always were. It felt like WCW commercials with all the ridiculous advertisements every 10 minutes, but that also gives you time to scope the other show to see what you like....
WWE
I missed the entire Bret Hart thing because of Hogan, I will probably watch it on youtube or something...But everytime I turned to the show, nothing interesting was happening at all.
You have Jericho/Show fighting DX....That's a cool little match, but I mean...and I'm sure I speak for a lot of people. It's the same people from 10 years ago, fighting the same people over and over again.
The difference between "Wow, I've waited ten years to see this" and "It's them again again for the last ten years" are quite different.
You could EASILY tell which show was more grown up and interesting. WWE didn't really care what was on the other channel. They know it's not a big ratings 'thing' they have it in the bag. Everything was boring and done a million times over and over.
'Oh no, Big show leaves Jericho"..how many partners has Jericho lost? Curtis Hughes, Edge, Kane, Show, the list goes on. How many times has HHH fought Jericho? Quite a few, the best still being when Jericho beat him for the title on Raw many many years ago, only to get the decision reversed.
Randy Orton, it's cool to see him. I haven't watched in awhile, so I don't really know what he was up to. Didn't really care, who ever cared about the Bulk and Skull stable of Legacy? Air headed empty skulls that never know how to talk on camera.
I didn't catch the end of Raw, but it seems like they pulled one of the endings where you 'must watch' next week to find out? When EVER have they done something like this? It never happens anymore, and it probably won't happen for another few months, but at least they tried to hook viewers with something..they need a new spark....
Bret won't be it. He won't be the on to make ALL the fans of the past come back just to see what him and Shawn Michaels are up to. I mean, it was when Bret Hart left WWF that it actually gained more popularity. When he was in WCW he was boring as crap and no one cared.
=================
End statement
TNA, with Bischoff, Angle, Hogan, Hall, Nash, Hardy, Scott, Sean, Flair will not only make me want to play Smackdown vs Raw 2004, but I am very interested to see where this goes and can finally say I will watch TNA and hopefully enjoy it.
Unlike the past where I couldn't get passed 2 episodes without going 'WTF is this crap?". The minds of wrestling are all there. You'd be quite the fool not to watch the show if you're a wrestling fan. Give it 2 weeks from now, see where it goes at least.
I'm going to imagine this will be 'locked' because of all the rampant discussion..but I figured this was much longer than a typical post.
