I was flipping through my iPod on my drive to work (very safe to do btw) and discovered "The Ballad of Davy Crockett" on there. I have no clue how it got on there, but I might have driven to work singing about the King of the Wild Frontier. Might have.
Anyway, Davy Crockett was a huge hero of mine when I was kid. I don't know why, but I thought he was an amazingly cool person. Then I flipped on a podcast and it started talking about King Arthur which is another story I absolutely loved as a kid about another (allegedly) historical figure. Is there anyone else on here who looked up to certain historical figures as heroes?

Part of me wants to say Martin Luther, the Protestant Reformer...not because even the fact that he was Protestant or even a religious figure, but the political ramifications his rebellion had...I mean, the Catholic church had ruled Western Europe for a millenium prior, and here's a mere friar challenging its authority and leading a whole movement that still lives today.
At the same time, he was also a vicious anti-Semite and a nutcase, but nevertheless, can't help but admire his reformational courage.

One of my favorite people from past history is probably Beethoven. I find it amazing that he played music the way he did for his time, plus his music is still going today and inspiring so many, same with Mozart. Then we have Stanley Kubrick, the way he did film, is pretty cool, I'm sure it's inspired some filmmakers out there.. Then there are George Washington, Abraham Lincoln & other presidents, that I just respect. Albert Einstein, mans a genius, same with Thomas Edison & Isaac Newton. Also have to go with Leonardo da Vinci, his work was amazing IMO.

Hitler. Not for the Holocaust but for the long term things he did for the country of Germany. He took a country that was poor and handcuffed by a treaty that prevented any building of an army and cut the nations size down. He turned that country into an industrial powerhouse and expanded the nations borders by any means necissary. He also started the precursor of things many nations embrace to this day such as Public Healthcare. Now I fully anticipate that a lot of people are going to point at this part of my post as particularly offensive but other than the Holocaust part of Hitler's reign he was a smart man who turned an entire nation around and endeared himself to many. There were people who were willing to die for the man. That's impact. People view Hitler as one of the worst people in history yet Stalin also killed hundreds of thousands of people and his vengeance knew no boundaries. He killed because he could.
ANYWAYS other historical heroes I have include the likes of Mozart, John A Macdonald, Alexander Graham Bell and The Buddha

I idolize many figures from the American Revolution, namely Samuel Adams, Paul Revere, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, etc. Among them, I hold in higher regard those who's flag I fly in my signature.

Martin Luther King Jr. The man's influence has done so much for us(blacks) as a people. The entire country has come a LONG way since he and others marched back in the 60's.

For years I have made this same argument and was ridiculed for it. Hitler is easily my historical hero.
