No matter your stance on the death penalty, you should be offended that the mentally disabled would be subjected to this punishment.
Some will claim she was not mentally disabled as in Virginia an IQ of 70 or below says you are mentally disabled and she had an IQ of 71. But I still think that is outrageous.
The Supreme Court wouldn't even take a look at this case.

Was that the only determination the state had for establishing if one is mentally intellectually- disabled? Their may be other qualifications she did not meet that meant she was eligible for capital punishment.
Plus capital punishment is something that a state determines, not the federal government. Plus...it's not a Constitutional matter.

She used sex, cash and the promise of insurance money to hire two hitmen to kill her husband. Very hard thing for a mentally disabled person to do. She pleaded guilty, admitted to coordinating the whole thing, gave the guys who shot her husband money to buy the guns they used and waited 45 mins to call the cops. Sounds like a lovely individual.

Plus...it's not a Constitutional matter. The Supreme Court seemed to think it was a constitutional matter when they ruled that mentally disabled people cannot be executed. It violates the "Cruel and unusual punishment" clause in the Constitution. "In the future, the ruling will mean that people arrested for a killing will not face a potential death sentence if they can show they are intellectually- disabled, generally defined as having an IQ of 70 or lower, the AP reported." So to be declared mentally "intellectually- disabled" by the Supreme Court, they must have an IQ of equal to or less than 70. I think all that she did to make sure that her husband and stepson died proved that she wasn't really disabled. She had the right state of mind to hire two people, put up the pitbull they had so it wouldn't attack, and let the men in. She had plenty of time to change her mind but she went through with it and now she has to answer to God for what she has done.

She could have seen several movies where people hire others to kill and she could have thought of those as real and did what she did because she saw it somewhere else. Or maybe she heard it on the news and she thought it would be a good way to go. Who knows, all we know is that she was 1 point off and apparently that 1 point is what made a difference in her thought process. |

I was just pointing out the fact that her actions doesn't fit that of a mentally disabled person. She had the mind set to plan and carry it out. As far as the death penalty everyone is entilted to their own opinion. If it was my family memebers I am not sure how I would feel. In a way you could say that God did make the decision if you believe that our lives are already determined before we are born. It's all in what you believe.

The first woman to be executed in the U.S. in five years has been put to death in Virginia for arranging the killings of her husband and a stepson over a $250,000 insurance payment.
Teresa Lewis, 41, died by injection at 9:13 p.m. Thursday. She became the first woman executed in Virginia in nearly a century. Supporters and relatives of the victims watched her execution at Greensville Correctional Center.
Lewis enticed two men through sex, cash and a promised cut in an insurance policy to shoot the sleeping men in October 2002. Both triggermen were sentenced to life in prison, and one committed suicide in 2006.
More than 7,300 appeals to stop the execution had been made to the governor in a state second only to
Texas in the number of people it executes.

Look, if she didn't hire two hitmen to killer her husband this wouldn't even be an issue. There are tons of mentally disabled people out there who meet the legal standard easily and don't hire hitmen to kill people. In her mental state, she probably didn't know what she was doing. She could have seen several movies where people hire others to kill and she could have thought of those as real and did what she did because she saw it somewhere else. Or maybe she heard it on the news and she thought it would be a good way to go. Who knows, all we know is that she was 1 point off and apparently that 1 point is what made a difference in her thought process. Yeah, she had no idea that giving someone money to buy guns so they could shoot her husband would result in her husband dieing. She had no idea that her husband was dieing after he was shot with a shotgun right in front of her. So she waited 45 mins. Strangely enough, she was never diagnosed as having a low IQ until after she'd been given the death penalty. Like I said, there are literally thousands of mentally intellectually- disabled people walking around not killing people and not plotting people's deaths. I know personal responsibility sucks. |
