You guys have one minor, minor fact wrong - No one is taking his land. No one is. Normally, governments can't seize land just for housing violations and this is no exception. They've evicted him for housing violations and have told him he can move back in the second he brings his land up to code. This isn't really unusual. It happens every single day in every single city in America.

Yes, but they should not enforce them in this case, mainly because: its not gonna affect anybody, nor will it hurt anything in any way

Let's say I'm a landlord. I don't live in the house. I guess it doesn't have to be up to code then? Or if a single person moves in, it has to come up to one code, but if a person with kids moves in, it has to come up to a different code?

And what happens if I rent to a single person. Then they have a kid. Do they have to inform me that they now have a kid so I can make the repairs needed to bring the property into compliance? Can I raise this person's rent now because I had to make these repairs?

The repairs shouldn't be that bad. You do that anyway, it's called baby proffing.

The repairs shouldn't be that bad. You do that anyway, it's called baby proffing. So if I'm a landlord, I'm baby proofing a tenant's house for them? You don't think that's insane? And if they don't do it, they get evicted? Now I'm being punished. As a landlord I can either spend my money to upgrade the house or my tenants get evicted and I get 0 rent from them. Or do we now have multiple types of housing? We have housing that only single people can live in. We have housing that only married people can live in. We have housing that people with kids can live in. It's ridiculous.

Yeah don't lump me in with some of these responses... But I still feel that we need to use some rationality on enforcing these laws. If this was in the middle of the city or something and had a legitimate effect on other people, their home values, potentially their health, etc. then I can see why we need to step in and boot him out.

We aren't talking about being a landlord and renting out a house. Of course if you are renting the house you have to keep it up to code.
If you own the land, the house AND you live there, you can do whatever you want.
