Okay, so here is the breakdown from the classicfan2.
I'm a huge classic superstars and Mattel legends fan. Watched wrestling from 1984 to 2003 and was a hard-core fan. Been to many live events, bought/sold/traded thousands of dollars in posters, programs, figures over the years. Even have had UFCWWF1 on my license plates since 1995 (huge UFC fan to). Was one of the originals on the Jeremy.com website. So I know my legends and I know what we all want.
Someone on here said "i think mattel needs to hire someone who knows wwe history and can point them in the right direction on who to market"
I would take that job and you guys would all love my legends line (wwf, nwa, wcw, attitude era, world class, awa, uwf). Aside from being a UFC fighter, this would actually be my second dream job. (Hunting down/signing legends & making legend figs) I actually sent an application in to Mattel, and called numerous times stating my wrestling knowledge and background, but got nothing.
With that said, here's my take on Mattel's legend line:
First off, I love the line, the figures and detail are awesome. But I too, am a bit worried about this line. Going down to four figures sucks, especially when they're putting tag teams in there to. I actually fear, if this line doesn't start selling, we will only see 1 legend put in each elite series or something. Isn't that what Jakks has decided to do with the LOTR series? They needed to push this line hard just before Christmas, like jakks did in 04! And start the line off some big hitters (jakks had bret, micheals, taker, andre, hhh, warrior in thier 1st set, and that helped a lot getting the line going).
Jakks got The classic superstars line buzzing before the economy really got bad. They also were the first to make awesome legend figures, which got alot of people into it. And as many have said on this thread already, some are not out to buy a whole nother legends line, when they already spent all that money on jakks. The price for the Mattel figs is much too high for today's economy. $15 a figure and $30 for a two pack is a major reason why they are not selling. $10/$20 is even a bit high, but would do better on the overall market.
There also doesn't seem to be much of a buzz for legends, as they really don't promote it much. There needs to be a weekly 2-3 hour legends show every week on free TV. Maybe bring in legends as cohosts (the ones that are still alive obviously) talking about their match, help building it up. Educate the new fans that are out buying figures about the legends. They can also do a "weekly" legends guest on RAW! Put out more commercials for the legends figures, maybe with legends in the commercial (legends get paid that way too!). And make sure you advertise on raw some of the big legend matches coming up on the weekly legend show. This is the single biggest way to get the legends line booming. Once it's hot, put up big legend signings across the globe, promoting legends.
There also needs to be a Mattel legends website. With an actual person on their interacting with the fans that by the figures and listening to their input on what they want. Put up tons of different polls on there asking about which figs you want, what outfits you'd like to see, which tag teams you want, faults and praises for figures already made, etc. if I had this job I would be doing exactly that.

Legends are the only figs I collect, it's tough to get excited about it when it takes forever to build your collection up. I loved Jakks series 7,8,9 and stuff with all those legends in each line.
The Jeremy.com site, with him posting who they just signed and who's gonna be made next was very exciting.

I actually have no problem at all that they released The Bushwackers. They're good figures and they were a popular Tag Team in the early 90's, but they should not have been in the first series (maybe series 2 or 3). The other packs should have never been ing produced Agreed! Jakks started with LOD (red), Harts (bret), Rockers (shawn)!

yeah the selection out the gate on the 2 packs was poor.we should have seen LOD in their Gold Summerslam 92 attire here.alongside the Black from series 1 singles its the attire fans wanted most.
I really want a Patriot figure and USA Warrior from Mattel.HBK,Bret etc are also taking too long to show up here.
now its fabulous we have got Ricky Steamboat and 3 Randy Savage figs but Akeem,Hillbilly Jim,George Steele and a couple of others could have waited and been spaced out better.

.... something like: Series 7: Rockers Shawn MichaelsRockers Marty Janetty Big Boss Man Y2J 1992 Shawn Michaels (Rockers version repaint) *2 Michaels in one series?! Instead of a Rockers repaint how about the 1992 red and white Heartbreak kid look.Series 8: 1994 Undertaker Sid Vicious Sgt. Slaughter - Camo Repaint "Macho King" Randy Savage Series 9: Bret Hart Rocky Maivia Ultimate Warrior 1992 SingletBrutus Beefcake While I hope we get more Savages and Warriors; would that be too many too soon? 4 figs each in less then a year. That said I'd love a Summerslam 92 Warrior.

i agree but whatever sells.... macho king i wouldnt mind having now , but i think we can wait for a new warrior. anyhow, if jakks went to 6 per wave they could throw in 2-3 main event wrestlers and put the rest as the mid carders with the right direction and figure/attire choices how can they lose.
altho ya id have to have one of each main guy, its the mid cards i always enjoyed, theres just so much character in the middle section
would a rocky maivia figure really sell that well? i know the rock is huge but his face debut sucked and isnt very memorable

Warrior is a big seller,so i expect a lot more of him...Savage is a well known name,so if his Legends 5 figure sells well,i think we'll see a lot of him sooner than later... i guess the point i was trying to get across was,if the line ISN'T doing well,or as well as Mattel wanted,i could see them skipping like a Giant Gonzalez or One Man Gang, and going with more well-known,and consistent sellers instead....

Im in the Tampa area and virtually every store that carries them here is overloaded, they are complete shelfwarmers...granted our economy is a little more adversely affected due to horrible housing market and higher than average unemployment, but I take it they sit due to price and lack of interest as well. Time will tell but I doubt youll see 28 waves of legends like jakks...be suprised if you see 12

I think there is too big of a collector base to just completely cancel the line. With having just 4 figures they can let it linger. You gotta think just over a year into the contract and we've got 6 series.

In fact no series thus far has interested me enough to buy the complete set. These are the ones I bought. Series 1 - Austin, Steamboat, Hawk, Animal Series 2 - Roberts (just sold him and got the All-Stars instead) Series 3 - Rock, Vader, Pillman, Bulldog Series 4 - Warrior Series 5 - I'll be getting Savage & Bam Bam Series 6 - I'll be getting Warrior, Guerrero & Tornado

i think guys like gonzalez and one man gang will get made eventually, these are guys mattel could do justice too and would look too good beside the smaller figures to pass on . ive heard a lot of people chose to pass on akeem to wait for omg ... hopefully akeem still sells well, but regardless
i think mattel will have the line for a long time after the initial 5 years and itll probably take them another year to get themselves in the game fully and completely. To Figure out what they are doing, and get everyone collecting mattel legends figures.
After that im sure it'll get a lot better... i think the figures will go back to 6 per wave within a year and i wouldnt be surprised if we seen 2 packs back with more Strategic 2 Pack Choices...
it would be easier to say who i didnt get
L1 Austin L2 Snuka + Funk L3 Rock + Pillman L4 L5 L6 Von Erichs + Guerrero 2 pack piper + orton DM shawn micheals, rock, triple h , austin
Seriously a Mattel Giant Gonzalez??? My God that would look so good man... i keep picturing him in my sig standing beside savage...

I think some of the stuff Mattel wouldn't be able to arrange and WWE would not want to but the key term is AdvertisingIn the UK we have WWE Vintage a 1 hour show that has match's from <2003 hosted by Mean Gene Oakland!!! I don't think the States get it and you should do. It should be 2-3hours long, International and Advertise WWE Legends Line! There also should be adverts about WWE Vintage and The Legends/Elites on Raw/Smackdown. The website you mentioned I'd never heard of but thats an absolutely brilliant idea! The character selection I personally liked but like many have said to get the line started they did it wrong especially the Legends 2-packs (which I agree). zombieapocalypse - "6 per wave they could throw in 2-3 main event wrestlers and put the rest as the mid carders with the right direction and figure/attire choices how can they lose"Mattel seem to be giving up on a Fantastic line in which they FailedWhat they should be doing is working on how to make it more successful as we all know these a market for them. They also should be spreading the word and getting the old fans back with the help from WWE! As for all of the Series I thought they have all been great but some were not right for the first couple. Legends series 2 was good but too early. Legends series 4 needed 1-2 bigger names in there. The 2-packs wrestlers picked seemed to me like over-confidence. Mattel look to be going the direction of series 5 which is a fantastic series, well spread out but its missing 2 figures.

Legends 5 is my Favorite Series by Far but if they had one More Main Event and one More Mid Carder it would be Perfect I Think with Mattels Excellent Scale of Figures there should be one Big guy in every wave to show off the scale better, Having Akeem next to someone like savage just brings back the excitement of the Golden age of WWF.... When you see someone like savage go up against someone like Andre and savage has to change his Style around a little to beat the big man, It was just exciting , It was the Whole David vs Goliath thing .... Theres Plenty of Big guys to Choose from too , Andre, Earthquake, Bundy, Gonzalez, One Man Gang, Tugboat, Yokozuna.... etc etc i Really Wanna See WM9 Undertaker and Giant Gonzalez in a Wave in the Future....

The choice of superstars so far is kind of baffling. However, if Mattel do manage to get it right, they put out the wrong attire. Now, in no way am I crapping on their work because it's absolutely fantastic. I think it's insane that such incredible figures are being made of guys (like Hillbilly Jim, early 80's Sgt. Slaughter, George Steele, long tights Jimmy Snuka, Kevin Von Erich, The Bushwhackers, etc.) that are not names you want to build your line around. Yes, they should come at some point, but Mattel should be pumping out Savage, Warrior, Michaels, Andre, Undertaker, Austin, Bulldog, Luger, The Hart Foundation, camo Slaughter, DiBiase, Yokozuna. BIG NAMES!
I'd love to see these upcoming series..
Series 7 The Undertaker - purple gloved Shawn Michaels - Rockers 2-Pack attire Shawn Michaels - 1992 red and white attire Marty Jannetty - Rockers 2-Pack attire Sgt. Slaughter - camo attire
Series 8 The Ultimate Warrior - USA attire Yokozuna - red and black attire Andre the Giant - black singlet Papa Shango
Series 9 Earthquake - blue 1990 attire Randy Savage - give us WrestleMania IX, that was cool Evil Crush Bobby Heenan
Series 10 Shawn Michaels - WrestleMania XIV Bret Hart - WrestleMania X Big Boss Man - early 90's Jesse Ventura - something similar to his silver attired CS figure
Series 11 Mr. Perfect - black and orange Jerry Lawler - SummerSlam 1993 Lex Luger - USA attire Evil Doink
I could go on and on and on, but the line needs more recognizable names and attires.

It'd be nice for matteldesignteam to post something here , i dont always agree with them listening to the fans.... ex; 2 dozen people online say 'make buddy roberts , i would buy 3 ' then they make him and he warms shelves everywhere Just for example.
This thread Explains in detail over multiple posts How to Succeed in Legends, Just take away from this thread What you Need to mattel to make this line 100% successful, obvs were all rooting for you
Heres What i Think would Be Good Waves obvs biased to my wants as well but i mixed in some good sellers i dont really want but make the line better
7
Rockers Shawn Rockers Marty Big Boss Man WM 9 Undertaker Purple Glove Giant Gonzalez Slaughter Camo
8
Macho King Randy Savage Blue Singet Earthquake Dino Bravo Heartbreak Kid Shawn Micheals Andre The Giant Debut HHH
9
Bret Hart (Singles) Jim "Anvil" Neidhart (Singles) Tugboat Debut Kane Ted Dibiase M$M Honky Tonk Man

I think since mattel isn't advertising the legends line, there is one real easy thing they could do that would be like advertising. Next wave just piggy back off the hall of fame inductions. Doesn't have to be everyone in the hall of fame just a couple do Shawn michaels in his attire the first night he won the world title, abdulla the butcher, and sunny wearing whatever. Then they can throw in one other person to make it 4 or 3 more to make it 6. But if you use those 3 names it's kind of like advertising cause they would of been talked a lot about on current tv and a kid that's never watched back in that era will be like oh yeah he/she was inducted this year. Hope that all made since, it did when I was typing lol! Personally me I think doink the clown figures would sell well cause for some reason no matter what age you are, u have heard of doink the clown. But I think it's time mattel threw a manager or female into a wave! And I think its time to make some kind of exclusive. I think exclusives always create a good buzz about a series as long as it's a real good creative one! For example when jakks did hulk in the tuxedo, I thought that was creative. I wouldn't mind a Vince McMahon legends figure to be honest with you all!

Youre the one getting butthurt about it e-toughguy, not me. Nothing you said was accurate and obviously your not familiar with the fact the internet is booming with sarcasm. Discussing like an adult? Ha! its a message board for wrestling figures!!! Take that elitist crap somewhere else so you can feel good about yourself, dont bring it here Sounds to me you're the only one getting angry after being corrected. Try being a "girl" somewhere else, I dont think anyone is buying it here. Thanks for playing though. Oooo the e-thug is threatening me, I better go .You have to be right before you can correct someone. I dont need to prove myself to someone whose been here for a month, the people on here know me so try again. Mattel people said it on here themselves, funny how you ignored that. I won't continue to argue with some kid over the internet though, whats with these new users coming on here with an attitude all of a sudden? Is this the same guy from last month?
