The Boston Red Sox and The New York Yankees have a long rivalry. It goes back to when The Yanks stole Babe Ruth from the Sox. The Yanks won a ton of world series, and the Sox didn't [Till they won a few years back].
George Steinbrener is/was the Owner of the Yankees. Derek Jeter is one of the greatest baseball players of all time for the Yankees and he over the weekend hit #3000 hits. So Calling a Red Sox fan The Yankees is sort of a slap in the face to them I suppose. I'm from New York so, I'm a Yankee fan naturally.
He mentioned Hockey, Football & Basketball teams as well. The Bruins for Hockey, The Patriots are Football & The Celtics are Basketball.

The way I saw it was like Man City always being a small club but now they (while being more similar to Chelsea) would be called the new Man United.
Something like that.

Punk named a bunch of Boston based sport teams, saying they were the underdogs in each of their sport. He then compared Cena to the New York Yankees, a baseball team that has won dozens of championships and Cena just took offence to it, as I guess Boston supports don't really like the Yankees.
That's my guess anyway, as I don't really follow Baseball as well.

McMahon was referred to Steinbrener(is/was owner of NY Yankees) cause Vince owns WWE. So Vince is the power house of the money, & wants only the best! Vince canless about his other talents, even tho they really the best....... he wants only ripped juice monkeys too be on the spotlight.....so ya....same ways go for Yankees.

I thought the segment was self explanatory. It was for me, I don't know the teams or people mentioned but the way the promo went it was obvious to what he was talking about.

So insulting his family is cool, but calling Cena "the Yankees" of the WWE? So help you God.

As a huge Yankee fan, I thought that promo was golden. BTW, did everyone notice how Cena was purposely speaking with a heavy Boston accent? I know he's from West Newbury, so is that his actual accent, or was he fabricating it since they were in Boston?

Punk's promo was, how I would guess, the majority of the "outside world," being the non AL East fans or residents of the North Eastern US, view the Red Sox and Yankees rivalry. As was mentioned, the Sox sold off Ruth to the Yankees, and the Yankees haven't stopped winning, while the Sox failed to capture a Championship until 2004. Now with Red Sox Nation, and Boston grabbing another World Series in 2007, the once under dog Boston Red Sox are a mirror image of the Yankee Machine that they despised for so many years. Essentially, if the Yankees, the Evil Empire, are Darth Vader, and the Boston Red Sox were Luke Skywalker, Luke turned to the dark side and is now battling Vader for supremacy of the Galaxy (hopes you have seen Star Wars so that makes sense). Now as a Chicago Cub fan, born and raised in Central Illinois, or an outsider to the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry, I look at Red Sox fan's exactly how Punk described John Cena. They believe they are still the under dog, but in reality when they won again in 2007 they became just like Yankees fans, and their collective sports teams as a city have created a dynasty. So no longer is a Boston team the under dog, in any situation, and no longer is John Cena the rapper with a big chain. John Cena, like the city of Boston, is a champion of the highest caliber. Punk called John Cena, using the city of Boston as analogy, a hypocrite of the highest degree. Since moving to South Florida, with the abundance of North Easterners from New York, Jersey, and Massachusetts, I have discovered first hand that they don't really know other teams exist outside of their AL East bubble. Which, if you go a little more than surface deep with the analogy, is probably how CM Punk feels, like an outsider. If John Cena is the Red Sox, and lets say Orton is the Yankees, and Vince is the owner of both Evil Empires, CM Punk is a Chicago Cub fan standing on the outside going " both you guys, we haven't won a World Series since 1908 and it's my time." As a baseball fan, sports fan, wrestling fan, and certainly a CM Punk fan, I really thought it was a layers deep analogy that fans could relate to and ended up being brilliant imo.

I kinda thought about it a different way. Punk said Cena thought he was Boston sports teams, all of which were "underdogs" in their respected game, all of which one time were. But in the past 7 years or so, all of the four major Boston teams have won a championship, and did it pretty much by spending money, at least with Red Sox, Pats, and Celtics. So Punk said that Cena is like these teams cause he "kissed ass" like the Boston teams spend money, just to become champion. And if you know anything about baseball, the Yankees are known for being the team that buys championships. So when Punk called Cena Stienbrener he's saying that he "paid" Vince to get where he is. The Jeter thing, IDK cause he is one of the most respected players in the game, and just had a huge accomplishment by getting 3,000 hits, maybe just cause he was in Boston?
On a side note, didn't the crowd seem a little rebellious last night? Cheering for Miz, Punk? And Booing their hometown Cena? Maybe it was just me.

Although I don't know anything about American sports, I didn't think it was too hard to follow the idea behind it.

I think that happened for two reasons 1) I feel like WWE is turning Miz face and 2) CM Punk is getting Austin like pops. The Miz thing is self explanatory but with CM Punk I think we are seeing the audience, largely the "we are sick and tired of seeing the same shit" audience get behind a guy that is pushing for something different in WWE. Plus, Punk just worked over his boss in a massive way last night and who can't relate in wanting to do that?

As being an Indians fan, I can agree in that AL East fans think that no other teams exist, and surely are arrogant. I'm with ya, Indians haven't won since 48', Cena give the Cubs and Tribe a Chance in the World series.

I think it was more of Cena just being a little out of character, yet he still had jokes. Like when he was talking about punks face, turning it into a mat or something, lol.

Those kinds of kids make me scared for America's future... God help us.

I thought the segment was self explanatory. Well the original poster is from the UK, so its understandable that he had no clue what they were talking about.
