He was saying that they think they are, but they aren't. They used to be a long time ago, but now they are on top, like Cena. pretty sure he just messed up lol, he even paused when he said it knowing he did. "Just like the Bruins portray themselves as the underdog...just like the Patriots...think they're the underdog." It was pretty clear. He paused, but he didn't make a mistake at all.

a big mistake was punk saying the patriots were an underdog, clearlyyyy not true lol How old are you? The Pats were massive under dogs through the back end of the late 80s and early 90s. Even under Parcells they had that under dog mentality and actually won a few times here and there. It wasn't until 2001 when Tom Brady came out of 6th round nowhere and put them on the map, well him and Adam Vinatieri. They were still under dogs in that season. It's the same as you would call the 2004 Red Sox under dogs, the 2007 team not so much. The Pats first Super Bowl win in franchise history was in 01 if I remember correctly? I think their loss to Da Bears was their only Super Bowl appearance in like 30 years.

Punk's promo was, how I would guess, the majority of the "outside world," being the non AL East fans or residents of the North Eastern US, view the Red Sox and Yankees rivalry. As was mentioned, the Sox sold off Ruth to the Yankees, and the Yankees haven't stopped winning, while the Sox failed to capture a Championship until 2004. Now with Red Sox Nation, and Boston grabbing another World Series in 2007, the once under dog Boston Red Sox are a mirror image of the Yankee Machine that they despised for so many years. Essentially, if the Yankees, the Evil Empire, are Darth Vader, and the Boston Red Sox were Luke Skywalker, Luke turned to the dark side and is now battling Vader for supremacy of the Galaxy (hopes you have seen Star Wars so that makes sense). Now as a Chicago Cub fan, born and raised in Central Illinois, or an outsider to the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry, I look at Red Sox fan's exactly how Punk described John Cena. They believe they are still the under dog, but in reality when they won again in 2007 they became just like Yankees fans, and their collective sports teams as a city have created a dynasty. So no longer is a Boston team the under dog, in any situation, and no longer is John Cena the rapper with a big chain. John Cena, like the city of Boston, is a champion of the highest caliber. Punk called John Cena, using the city of Boston as analogy, a hypocrite of the highest degree. Since moving to South Florida, with the abundance of North Easterners from New York, Jersey, and Massachusetts, I have discovered first hand that they don't really know other teams exist outside of their AL East bubble. Which, if you go a little more than surface deep with the analogy, is probably how CM Punk feels, like an outsider. If John Cena is the Red Sox, and lets say Orton is the Yankees, and Vince is the owner of both Evil Empires, CM Punk is a Chicago Cub fan standing on the outside going " both you guys, we haven't won a World Series since 1908 and it's my time." As a baseball fan, sports fan, wrestling fan, and certainly a CM Punk fan, I really thought it was a layers deep analogy that fans could relate to and ended up being brilliant imo. I don't think anyone could have enjoyed that promo more than Cubs fans from Illinois. Everything you said btw was how I saw it too

Why? It's probably the 2nd most watched sport in the world. I'm pretty sure it is the 2nd most watched sport in the world behind soccer/football. I think the article was from ESPN in 2010 but the list was made up of like formula racing, tennis, basketball, rugby, golf, and boxing or something like that? I'm almost positive that soccer, cricket, and basketball were 1,2, and 3.
