I'm from the UK and I know nothing about whatever sports they were refering to. What I took from it was that Punk was saying used to be the underdog (boston red sox) and has no become the top one that was the thing he hated (yankees).

And The Red Sox and The Yankees is the biggest rivalry in North American sports. They, and their fans, absolutely hate each other. To call a Red Sox fan a Yankee is a huge insult. note: CM Punk is a Chicago Cubs fan, who are the biggest underdogs in baseball.

I thought the segment was self explanatory. Well the original poster is from the UK, so its understandable that he had no clue what they were talking about. Are you serious? You are trying to tell me that because they are in the UK he has no clue the history of Boston/NY from a sports/historical perspective? Come on now....

So insulting his family is cool, but calling Cena "the Yankees" of the WWE? So help you God. Lmao, I noticed that too. Well, it is Boston and the slightest remark about the Yankees causes a riot.

The Red Sox are now a top team in baseball and they're money spenders like the Yankees are yet some fans still think The Red Sox are the lovable underdog against the Evil Empire Yankees (and the rest of the baseball world) when in reality the Red Sox of today are just like the Yankees. Cena is like the Red Sox because he's a top guy and has many championships yet in his feuds and matches he's always portrayed and acts as the underdog who overcomes the odds when actually he's not an underdog at all due to how much he wins.

I thought it was a really cool promo and comparison really.
The Red Sox have definitely become what they hated the most. They hated the Yankees because they were always on top, because they had the money to buy best players, because they had the most money, and were the face of major league baseball.
The Red Sox were always the loveable losers, the underdogs, the cursed team. Now the Red Sox have won multiple championships, are just as much the face of baseball as the Yankees, and they have tons of money, and also buy the best players available. They are always in the running for first place now.
They have become what they despised, which is the New York Yankees.
John Cena was the young kid who couldn't "hang." He was an underdog fighting guys like JBL, Eddie Guerrero, Big Show, Undertaker, HHH and more. He was a working class hero, and he wanted to break through the glass ceiling to be like those guys.
Now Cena is the face of the company, making tons of money, and he IS the glass ceiling. He has the power to dictate his opponents, and how his matches go. He can make or break other people's careers now, and he has Vince's ear. Cena has essentially, in many ways, becomse that which he hated, HHH.

I love how the last straw was Punk calling Cena the Yankees. Its ok to bring his Dad and wife into this, but no, calling him the Yankees (who are the greatest sports team in America) is the last straw. Lol.

The Boston Red Sox and The New York Yankees have a long rivalry. It goes back to when The Yanks stole Babe Ruth from the Sox. The Yanks won a ton of world series, and the Sox didn't [Till they won a few years back]. George Steinbrener is/was the Owner of the Yankees. Derek Jeter is one of the greatest baseball players of all time for the Yankees and he over the weekend hit #3000 hits. So Calling a Red Sox fan The Yankees is sort of a slap in the face to them I suppose. I'm from New York so, I'm a Yankee fan naturally. He mentioned Hockey, Football & Basketball teams as well. The Bruins for Hockey, The Patriots are Football & The Celtics are Basketball. I just wanted to add in that all of these teams are Boston teams that kind of portray themselves as underdogs even though they win a lot. Punk was really pointing out that Cena tries to come off like the underdog, even though he isn't the underdog at all.

Basically Punk was saying that he is the little underdog and Cena is the big bully. Cena stands for everything he hates. It struck a nerve with Cena so he punched Punk in the face.

OP was from UK so i understand the confusion but seriously the confusion of some people in the raw live post last night made me realize a lot of you kids gotta wake up from wrestling once in a while and watch a real sport, as much as there is athleticism involved in wwe, its all a storyline made up show and is by no means a sports turn on a damn football or baseball game once in a while for crying out loud

As a huge Yankee fan, I thought that promo was golden. BTW, did everyone notice how Cena was purposely speaking with a heavy Boston accent? I know he's from West Newbury, so is that his actual accent, or was he fabricating it since they were in Boston? I noticed that too at some parts.

Being that they were in Boston, it probably came back naturally being around it so much. Its the same thing with my dad. Hes from Boston, and you would never be able to tell. Whenever we go and visit his parents, who still have their accent, his slowly creeps back in, and it takes like a week for him to lose it again.

Punk's promo was, how I would guess, the majority of the "outside world," being the non AL East fans or residents of the North Eastern US, view the Red Sox and Yankees rivalry. As was mentioned, the Sox sold off Ruth to the Yankees, and the Yankees haven't stopped winning, while the Sox failed to capture a Championship until 2004. Now with Red Sox Nation, and Boston grabbing another World Series in 2007, the once under dog Boston Red Sox are a mirror image of the Yankee Machine that they despised for so many years. Essentially, if the Yankees, the Evil Empire, are Darth Vader, and the Boston Red Sox were Luke Skywalker, Luke turned to the dark side and is now battling Vader for supremacy of the Galaxy (hopes you have seen Star Wars so that makes sense). Now as a Chicago Cub fan, born and raised in Central Illinois, or an outsider to the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry, I look at Red Sox fan's exactly how Punk described John Cena. They believe they are still the under dog, but in reality when they won again in 2007 they became just like Yankees fans, and their collective sports teams as a city have created a dynasty. So no longer is a Boston team the under dog, in any situation, and no longer is John Cena the rapper with a big chain. John Cena, like the city of Boston, is a champion of the highest caliber. Punk called John Cena, using the city of Boston as analogy, a hypocrite of the highest degree. Since moving to South Florida, with the abundance of North Easterners from New York, Jersey, and Massachusetts, I have discovered first hand that they don't really know other teams exist outside of their AL East bubble. Which, if you go a little more than surface deep with the analogy, is probably how CM Punk feels, like an outsider. If John Cena is the Red Sox, and lets say Orton is the Yankees, and Vince is the owner of both Evil Empires, CM Punk is a Chicago Cub fan standing on the outside going " both you guys, we haven't won a World Series since 1908 and it's my time." As a baseball fan, sports fan, wrestling fan, and certainly a CM Punk fan, I really thought it was a layers deep analogy that fans could relate to and ended up being brilliant imo. The Yankees have won a championship more recently than the Red Sox and are still the favorites to win it all this year.

Surely you realize that cricket has a very large international following. I'm pretty sure that more people follow cricket than baseball.
