Sharing digital media is completely different from physical media. If I give you a CD, I no longer have access to it. The scarcity model still exists. If I give you digital media, I still have access to my copy. And you can give it to other people and I still maintain access. The digital world is completely and totally different from the analog one. It requires different rules that haven't been worked out yet. You can rip the songs from the CD and save them to your computer. You can then sell the CD while keeping the songs on your computer. I've never heard of someone getting in trouble for that. Legally speaking, you can't do that. Not saying you'll get in trouble for it, but legally, you can't do it. If you sell the CD, you have to destroy any digital copies you have.

is it illegal if I make my friend pay me 5 dollars and then I let him borrow MW3. Because me and about 8 friends have been doing this since 6th grade with lots of video games.

I'm not sure if it was Megaupload or some other site, but damn I used to watch a lot of the old Batman TAS & Batman Beyond there. Now I just watch it on The Hub.

i'm proud to be able to download - people have to start realizing the CONSUMER has been pirated of their funds unfairly for years. the system we currently have is not the only one. time for how we view media and the manners we obtain it differently, not backtracking ad trying to seal the internet up.
the internet is our only hope and vehicle for accomplishing that.

what about songs that are never released i go on a few sites that strict put out raps songs that the artist purposely release plus rappers dont make a dime off of mixtapes and probebly 60-80% of rappers owe their careers to mixtapes
what about shows that are not shown on tv nor on dvd its not our fault we would love to support them if they were friggin released (had this problem with boy meets world for years and now family matters and step by step)

People wouldn't pirate various media if the company's didn't overcharge for everything.

Well people like things that cost them nothing. At some point in history people decided that they are entitled to have everything they want and they shouldn't have to pay for any of it.

At some point in history people decided that they could charge excessive amounts of money for simple entertainment. At some point in history musicians began to care more about making money than music, and decided that they were entitled to make millions of dollars for making good music.

I don't agree with watching and dowloading things for free when you can pay for it, like streaming WWE PPVs. Buy it and support the company you enjoy watching! If you can't afford it then don't buy it or find a way to split the cost with someone.
I admit I download some things but often it's because I have missed it on TV, an example being sometimes my Sky+ box doesn't record Raw so I watch it online. Personally I think this is acceptable because I have the means to watch Raw, I pay legally for the channel that airs it but because of an error by me or my Sky+ box I failed to watch it so I'm not really stealing from them by watching it elsewhere.
If I enjoy something enough to watch it then I support it with my money. If I can't afford it at that moment I save up for it.
I don't agree with taking a site like Megaupload down but it does need to be maintained a bit better in taking down illegal items.

people are brainwashed. watch what you want, only the fat cats suffer from downloading... the ONLY detrimental impacts are:
1) less likelihood for labels to release copyrighted rare material - elliott smith is a pretty good example. millions of fans who have capitalized on the range of unreleased free live bootlegs and recordings, but since an introduction to elliott smith (his last weak attempt by dreamworks to attract attention from the masses for a fairly still unknown artist) flopped, there is little chance of the endless material he had on dreamworks ever being released which is very sad.
2) people going into the music industry as sound engineers, producers, etc. to say that downloading does not critically affect the amount of jobs in the music field and those looking for them would be preposterous.
both of these, i believe, can be fixed by converting to user-friendly digital media.
