So I was just looking for some DVD's to buy earlier and found that Play.com have started selling full seasons of Dragonball Z, theyre coming out consistently too (s1 out now, s2 in about a week, s3 1st week of oct) I've heard that it's got huge critical acclaim and everyone loves it but i've never actually sat down and watched it and will probably buy Season 1 to try it out. I don't know much about DBZ but I do know there was something called Dragon Ball and that there are saga's, so basically what I'm trying to ask, is season 1, the start of that story or if theres things i need to know before i watch it That's the dvd cover if it helps at all. I'm pretty much sold of getting it, watching the trailer for the dvd has got me excited

the series started out as Dragon Ball.. you may wanna watch it first before Z.. all dragonball series (DB, DBZ, DBGT, there is also dragonball Kai, wich is a remastered version of DBZ, with alot of edits and such,.. basically a director's cut type thing, and if matches more with howe the creator wanted the series to be,.. more closely to the manga ) have sagas,.. which are basically different frames of time, like a few years later sort of thing....
.but Dragonball, basically it is about when goku was a kid, and ends as he is a young adult.
Z starts off with goku grown up with his young son and ends with his son as a young adult.. they are seperate series... but basically Z is the sequal series to Dragon Ball
both series are kinda different. DB is more based on adventure, while DBZ is more based on defending the world against the next bad guy lol Seriouslt... soem bad guys come...get defeated... then they have to train for the next evil guy thats comming,.. but Z is still pretty awesome insane fights that can last forseveral episodes.
then there is Dragon Ball GT,which is the sequal series to Z.... i've never seen GT series to be honest... but I've read alot about it.. seems to have alot of fan service in it.
I hope this have helped out

Dragonball Z does start off a bit after where Dragon Ball left off, but there's really no need to watch the original series first. Whilst both are two of the greatest shows ever made, they're actually quite different. I always see Z as the more Sci-fi one, wheras Dragon Ball is a lot more based around fantasy and mythology/ folklore. Honestly, I think I prefer Dragon Ball more, but DBZ is much more iconic and has a bit more depth to it.
The first season/ saga is the Sayian Saga, which I feel is the best of the series. That should definitely be enough to sell you on the show. Do be aware though, that it can often drag at time - especially during the Freiza saga. In the end though it's worth it, definitely THE show that made me the anime geek I am now.

Anyway, I'd start off with Dragon Ball Z since the story line features much more action, and then go back and watch Dragon Ball. GT is fine, but a lot people bash. It's certainly not as good as Dragon Ball and DBZ, but I have no real problems with it. But definitely start off with season one of DBZ. That's the entire Saiyan Saga. Seasons two and three feature the Namek saga.

Also just a bit of a warning that the quality on those sets are pretty bad. It's cropped widescreen, the colors are dark and saturated, and some shaky camera scenes are messed up due to the "remastering." But they're the cheapest and unfortunately the only means to purchase the series and a steal of a price sets available, so go nuts!

I wish someone had told me this........
If you go out and buy it on dvd, do yourself a favor, buy it at Walmart. You get Season 1 and 2 for around 40 dollars. Otherwise finding season 2 on its own is very hard to do. I bought season 1 at target and then went back to get season 2........ no such thing. You might get lucky and find it at fyi or some other dvd store but it will cost around the same as getting the two season set from walmart.

I vaguely remember something about a tournament and 7 dragon balls, is this in Z or one of the different series They collect the seven dragon balls a lot during all three of the series. The dragon can typically grant one wish, excluding the Namekian (three) and the new Shenron (two). You'll find out all of the rules for wishes and stuff like that once you delve into the series. You'll find most of the tournaments in Dragon Ball, but there are a couple in DBZ and one (I think) in GT. They're just martial arts tournaments and besides the ones in Dragon Ball, they're not very competitive except for the Z Fighters. Hope I've helped.

Is it one continuous story or do they start a saga and then never mention the previous saga ever again

Just a heads up. These DvDs are the Funimation dub not the dub that was originally aired in the UK back in the early 2000s.
Not really a problem for the original poster but anyone buying these expecting the same voices from when they were a kid might be disappointed.

The only things that don't fit in with the story line are the movies, which I wouldn't both with since you're just getting into this.

Whats the general plot of Season 1, like what is it about, without spoilers Aliens called the Saiyans land on Earth and fight with Goku and all of his friends. I really can't go any deeper without spoiling anything. The main antagonists are Raditz, Nappa, and Vegeta.

Dragon Ball and DBZ are both fantastic. The Blue / Orange Box Season Sets aren't the greatest as they have some video quality issues, but for the casual fan they're fine. Dragon Ball GT however is complete garbage, avoid it entirely.

Dragon Ball GT however is complete garbage, avoid it entirely. While I don't agree that it's garbage, I will say it isn't necessary. It's non-canon and the story is much more over the top (if that's even possible in the DBZ universe) and has really no plot development. I still enjoyed some of it. The season sets are definitely the best thing for a casual fan. But hey, if you find yourself getting into DBZ, check out the Dragon Boxes. I would totally buy them but 1) they are expensive and 2) I already have the season sets.

^^prepare to have your mind blown!
as for GT, I remember really liking it as a kid. I didn't watch much of it, but I remember it having a really 'sci fi' feel to it which for one reason or another I quite liked. I also liked Goku being a kid again, as he was more relatable to me back then. It didn't feel remotely connected to DB/DBZ at all, and I bet I find it unbearable if I went back and watched it now but I'd like to check it out again for curiosity sake. Although this thread has reminded me just how long it's been since I read (let alone watched) Dragon Ball, so I'll probably go back to that.
