8-28 UPDATE
FINISHED JAKKS VERSION!
Lots more pics on page 4!!!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
7-19 UPDATE
Here they (almost) are! I know it's hard to make out the details, hopefully this weekend I can clean them up, sand and primer them and take beter pics.
My first heads are the ones at the ends, both sized incorrectly, so I played it safe and had 4 more at differing sizes made and would just choose the closest fit. Two of them are perfect for JAKKS and Mattel sizes!
Very cool stuff! If they turn out, I have two more ready to go, and I might offer this service to serious buyers for their own "dream custom."

6-18 Head UPDATE:
The Mattel sized head model is almost complete! I really like the work we've done on this model. Next up will be to purchase a Shapeways print of this head, I am researching the material I need to use to get the smoothest texture. Regardless of the texture, a spray coating of sealer and molding and casting will smooth it out a bit more.
If Owen turns out, I have tons more projects I'd like to turn to next. Here's a sneak peak:
The mouth looks weird on the Watts model because the picture I used for a skin had an open mouthed smile, which, when I apply it to the model, has the teeth become part of the skin, so they show up on the lips. The model without the skin applied shows how it would look in plastic.

6-10 UPDATE*************************************************************************
I am very close to having a finished 3-D modeled OWEN HART head scaled for BOTH JAKKS and MATTEL bodies. I have made the initial face "scan" and modified the expression into one of his infamous sneers. It is different from the head model shown below (pics coming soon!). I hired a professional modeler to do some finishing work on the initial models I made (resized to both scales, watertight, and hollowed.
Once I receive them they're off to the printers. The heads I get back will be bald, so from there Owen can have one of his many hairstyles sculpted onto him, shaggy with headband (New Foundation), long King of Harts, later years buzzcut, even the Blue Blazer mask could be easily made onto the bald head!
More info soon on this limited run of exclusive heads!

Well, after years of being able to mold and cast my own heads, as well as enlarge and shrink heads to fit my needs, I decided to take the next step and look at 3D head creation. I've used 3D printing services like Shapeways several times, so I'm pretty familiar with what they can do, and I'll be honest, I'm underwhelmed at the current state of resin fabrication. Metal might be much smoother than resin, so I guess we need to find someone to bite the bullet and try it out.
Yadda yadda, enough technical stuff, I'll show what I made in one evening.
I made these faces in a program called FaceGen, using the free version. None are perfect, but it is VERY easy to use, and one could spend hours making fixes and tweaking things, as I did with the David Von Erich below. I think he'd look awesome with hair and a cowboy hat, heh heh.
The "SI" marks are the company's initials, since I use the free version, they are there. If I pay for the full version, they are gone, and I gain the ability to export the files into another program to tweak and resize for Jakks or Mattel sizes. Also, the program allows for easy emotions, such as anger, sadness, fear, suprise, and a ton of other stuff. I used them on a few faces.
The Good:
Owen Hart, made from 2 POV, I like his unique nose.
David Von Erich, I really like this one, worked on it the most of all of these
Adrian Adonis, I like it
Fritz Von Erich
Gary Hart
The Bad:
Stu Hart: FaceGen currently doesn't really allow for wrinkles and skin folds like ol Stu here would need. I guess that needs to be done by hand.
The Ugly:
Cyndi Lauper, needs A LOT of work!
Okay, Wendi isn't terrible, and she was only made from one POV.
I think if you use this program right, even a novice 3D modeller could find this very beneficial. It gives you the basic head shape, and plots the proportions of the eyes, nose and mouth, along with chin and forehead basic shapes. If it was produced, and then cast in wax or even resin, one could sculpt the missing details by hand. Just something to think about. After the holidays, I might give it a serious try.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?
