Hogan joining the nWo. While the streak being over was a huge shock, I don't think it will ultimately have that much of an impact on the future of wrestling, other than one of the yearly attraction matches at Wrestlemania not happening anymore, which in the grand scheme of things isn't all that big. It didn't really do much for Lesnar... he's already over as a top monster heel, and he's already taking another leave of absence, so where are they gonna go with it? I still can't believe Taker lost, but the magnitude and impact of it in the long run pales in comparison to Hogan turning heel.

I couldn't accurately gauge which one was more shocking since I was even a fan back then.
Maybe people are more civilized nowadays, but I was waiting for the garbage to come raining down in the ring after Lensar won a la Bash at the Beach. Everyone was too frozen in awe to do anything, though.

Hogan joining the nWo easily. The most shocking moment in history. You can talk about the looks of shock on the fans faces when Taker lost, but nothing will top the amount of garbage that was heaved into the ring following Hogan turning... An absolutely incredible and infamous moment..

Hogan has the edge in my opinion, wrestling was at a different point than now so its really not fair to compare. People were covering the ring in trash like crazy....it takes a lot to bring that kind of emotion out of people, some mark also stormed the ring that night as well..

NWO Hogan was pretty shocking, but having Taker lose at WM is more shocking. Hogan was getting booed so he needed a change. The Undertaker's streak was one of the things people liked about WrestleMania and now it is gone going forward. That now takes away part of WM's mystique.

I'd go with Hogan being revealed as the third man in the nWo. The end of the streak left me speechless for a good 5 minutes followed by a feeling of melancholy. It was a shocking moment. When Hogan went heel it was not only a shocking moment but it felt like the entire business had just changed. Seeing Hogan standing in the middle of the ring with Hall and Nash as fans threw trash at them is an image I will never forget. The announcing, particularly Heenen with his shouts of "I knew it! I've been warning people about Hogan for years!", also made that moment better for me as Cole, JBL, and Lawler have no ability whatsoever to make a moment feel epic.

Ah you little kids...Hogan WAS a heel in the seventies early 80's. So him turning heel again was not quite a shocker. Plus it was 2 weeks for the "surprise" of him turning heel...UT has been built up as this unstoppable monster at WM for the past 10 years at least.
Definitely the streak ending is more shocking.

Paul Bearer turning heel on UT @ Summerslam 1996
&
HHH turning heel on DX @ WM15.
Now Im not saying I wasn't shocked Sunday night......I was f*cking STUNNED.

I honestly thought Taker losing was only shocking because of who it was against. I've always expected Taker to lose. I just thought it would be against Cena. I guess I just wasn't as overwhelmed by it as many people seem to be, but then I never saw the Streak as anything super sacred either.

I was into all of the wrestling websites and chat rooms (wut) back then and I never saw a single mention of Hogan as the third man. The only names I really remember being tossed around were Bret Hart and Bam Bam Bigelow (as far as new wrestlers... there were also rumors that Sting or Luger might turn during the match). I think the obvious answer is Hogan. It came out of absolutely nowhere and was a bold, risky move for him at the time. With 'Taker I think I speak for the majority when I say that I thought he'd win, but I also thought that eventually his streak would end. I think I was about 90/10 on 'Taker winning, but with Hogan there were about 1000 guys I would have guessed before him. I was pretty well convinced, about five minutes in, that Luger was going to run back in at the end of the match and side with Hall and Nash. Glad I was wrong. |
