I saw that someone mentioned Bart Gunn knocking out Dr. Death at Brawl For All..I've heard of Brawl for All, but I had never watched it or known what it was...
So to my shock, it's boxing
Who the hell thought thay was a good idea? Even back then the fans were chanting "boring"
What a terrible idea.

Here's the whole thing, without the uninterested commentary and crowd. Starts at 09:51.
The premise was to get legit tough guy 'Dr. Death' Steve Williams over as a challenger for Stone Cold and the WWF title, it was completely voluntary and was seen as a chance for midcarders to make some extra cash and hopefully if they got far in the tournament, get a push from it. Instead, it resulted in quite a few legitimate injuries and was poorly received by fans at a time where WWF were battling for ratings supremacy with WCW.

Well there's a lesson to be learned......don't listen to a word JBL has to say. This is the cretin that recently said(in public no less) Cole was the greatest play by play man ever. He should be beaten with a towel soaked in piss for making that statement.

It sucked.
It was more like the "Toughman Competitions" which were pretty popular at the time as an alternative to UFC.
Epic fail all the way around though.

He should be beaten with a towel soaked in piss for making that statement. I didn't know he said that about Cole...ugh. That is beyond delusional. Even if they are best friends I can't imagine somebody saying that with a straight face. Brawl for all was just brutal. Separating that sort of fighting from the regular wrestling matches took away from the main products legitimacy. Like adding gloves and guys getting KO'd works on the same show when you portray guys punching each other with bare fists 20 times without knocking each other out? Kind of insulting to the audience.

It was Vince Russo's idea. Hear Cornette's thoughts on it here:

Looking back, I think we seem to think 1998 Attitude Era was a time when everyone was over, everyone had a place on the card. We forget there were a few guys who just couldn't get over. Those were the guys in Brawl For All. I think it was ok concept for those particular guys and most, it not all, gave the impression they were tough guys but unfortunately wrestling needs to follow a certain script and because this wasn't pre-determined, it didn't turn out so good. Not only that but the winner never did anything until early 1999 when Bart was brought back once or twice until WrestleMania and then destroyed by Butterbean.

It was kind of like MMA but with Boxing gloves on. They allowed take downs. In boxing take downs are not allowed. WWF allowed Dan Severn to participate but after one match they took him out of the tournament. I guess they were hoping Dan would be knocked out in his first bout but then they realized they were Fracking with the wrong guy.

Hawk, Williams, Godfather (and Bart after knocking out the Doc), have all been pretty damn over in at least one point of their careers.

At the time the WWF roster was filled with "wanna-be" tough guys. Williams was supposed to get a big push after the tournament. But after being knocked out by Bart Gunn, the WWF changed course. Some say it ended Williams career.

I loved it! It was a true competition to find out who as a real bad ass. You had guys who thought they were bad asses like Bradshaw and Mideon. You had guys that were great all around athletes like Dr. Death. Then you had a guy who I thought was a lock for it, a golden glover in Marc Mero

I was about 11 years old when it aired, and I recall digging it. It was very appropriate for the era, IMO. New and crazy things were happening every week, and Brawl For All was just another one of them. The way they built up Dr Death only to have Bart annihilate him was weird. Before reading about the tournament and jogging my memory in the process, that was the one thing I clearly remembered about it.

The coverage of Brawl For All on the blunders episode of Countdown was far, far better than the actual Brawl For All. Poor Bart.

Had they let Dan Severn continue on, it would have exposed the business. It is part of the reason why Ken Shamrock wasn't in the Brawl For All tournament. The WWF was originally going to have the finals of the Brawl For All at SummerSlam 1998. Instead, it was held on the RAW before.

Dan Severn...now that was one bad ass mofo.
When that music hit and he walked to the ring with that cold stare. Awesome. I wish he had been better in the ring because he had "the look".
Plus, he killed D'Lo Brown that one time on Raw.

I know a lot of wrestlers said, and people in the WWE too, that if they wanted to make Dr. Death seem like a legit threat to Steve Austin, then just make the Brawl For All staged.
I don't know why the WWE (more likely Jim Ross) thought that Dr. Death could destroy everyone in this tournament. He was like 38 years old at the time. This wasn't 1985 anymore, and I am sure back then in the UWF he really was a legit tough bad ass. But in 1998, I would say his tough days were long over.

Good point on those guys but at the time, definitely, their careers were lackluster. LOD was made out to be old timers during the feud with the Outlaws, they returned to some fan fare at WrestleMania but short thereafter they were doing nothing. Dr. Death came to WWF with very little fan fare. I don't even remember him being on TV until the BFA. His WWF action figure was a poor seller primarily because WWF never did anything to make the fans care. Godfather was still in the Nation phase, yet to become the fun loving Godfather, and prior to that point Papa Shango and Kama weren't over.
