It's been my experience in pretty much every gym I've trained at, that there is a sort of attitude hierarchy at the gym. The ones who are 'judgy' and act like king kong, are usually actually quite crappy at it themselves, and pretty much projecting their own insecurities. The ones at the top, the actual strong mf'ers who have been paying tribute to the iron gods for years on end, are often the nicest people in the whole buidling. They may not go out of their way to talk to you, since they're there to get a job done, but they're the last ones passing judgement. What type of exercises are you talking yourself out of right now? I'm the anti-social mofo. I don't talk to nobody, I go out of my way to look away from people, I pretend they aren't there. Really my only problem right now is chest, when I deal with weight that I know I can do physically but have never actually done before I turn into a terrified little b*tch. I recently did the full weight rack on the butterfly machine (290lbs) after trying to do it for months, I did it twice after three tries. On the chest press machine (which is way heavier that the weight says it is) I can do 150lbs 5 times but can't even do 155 once. That's the major one for me that I just can't get better at. Even if my gym had a bench (which they don't) I would never do it because that's something I want to do alone in my garage blasting music. Chest is my weakness mentally, not physically. Anything involving the chest is typically a long game too. I mean, obviously some people are going to be naturally better at pressing movements than others. One of my old powerlifting buddies was always going to be a significantly better bench presser than I was. His arms barely got past his waist, mine damn near hit my kneecaps. One of us is going to be better at pressing than the other lol. I remember being at Nationals one year, and listening to one of our buddies from Quebec go on a rant, and someone tried to interrupt him and he (jokingly) goes "Eeef you 'annot bench at least four 'undred pounds, seet down and shut the f*** up". (I tried to make that read as french as possible haha). He was just being a smartass, but there was a point in there. In general, you have to put a lot of time in and a lot of hours in for a big bench. Not that you don't for a big squat or a big deadlift, but the curves are a bit different for most. Squats and Deads seem to be more of a down opening parabola type curve, and bench seems to be more of an upwards parabola type. I.e. squats/deads start fast and then progress grinds, bench is kinda the opposite. Granted that will always vary from person to person, but you get what I mean. Personally, my bench is always gonna be dogcrap compared to my other lifts, but my pecs will look sweet due to a bone that sticks out and makes my chest look way more jacked than it is haha! Tl;dr -- chest takes a ton of time to get good at, and the early increments can feel small and discouraging. The mental game is always a battle. No matter how strong you get, heavy weight is always gonna be intimidating, and it's always gonna try and psych you out. Cleans have always been that exercise for me. Trying to get the balls to really sink into some heavy cleans can be so damn tough mentally. I'm so glad I have my garage gym and can work out those mental struggles there, it's definitely harder in public.

Trying to get the balls to really sink into some heavy cleans can be so damn tough mentally. I'm so glad I have my garage gym and can work out those mental struggles there, it's definitely harder in public. In general I'm fairly strong. I could probably squat 500lbs a couple times with decent form (not standing, but using the sitting machine with actual plates because my left knee is a b*tch). My squat best is 420lbs x 10 with decent form (there's only so far down I can go before my knee starts hurting no matter the weight, I try my hardest to go down as far as possible though). I think the thing is that chest is my dad's strong suit and he can do more than me which kills me inside. He's a tall skinny guy who can lift some crazy weight even in his 50's and 60's. My logic is if I can't out lift him at every single thing I'll never do anything in life. I am ridiculously hard on myself but you don't get anywhere in life without constantly questioning yourself. It's taken it's toll on me but it'll all be worth it when I can finally accurately say that I'm the best at something. This is what happens when everyone tells you that you aren't good enough. Constant questioning, anxiety, doubt, etc. I can only imagine how hard I'll be on myself when I'm WWE Champion, I'll never be good enough because there is always the next thing. The next inch on your bicep measurement, the next plate, the next belt, the next match, the next rep, the next set. It's always self questioning. I don't know if it's a way of forcing yourself to be better or what, all I know is that it'll never stop.

MclovinOur quote train is getting long lol, this was easier. I dunno if you're much of a reader, but if you are, I'd recommend checking out both Peak Performance by Steve Magness & Brad Stalberg, and Relentless by Tim Grover. Two very contrasting opinions that blend very well in terms of the mental side of high performance training. I coach primarily high school aged athletes, and some pretty talented ones. I find myself lending out these two books more than any others when it comes to understanding how to be a high performance athlete. Relentless is the 'kick you in the ass and light a fire under you' kinda motivation book, and Peak Performance is the 'here's how to do it without burning yourself out' kinda book, so I find they compliment each other really nicely, even if they are pretty different in their viewpoints. You seem very driven and motivated, if you can find these at a library or something they'd be worth a read I think. Tim Grover was Michael Jordan, Kobe, and Dwayne Wade's actual personal trainer. He is as no-b.s. as they come. Magness was a former high school track prodigy who totally burnt himself out and failed as a post high school athlete, and took his methods to big deal fortune 500 companies and helped them avoid burnout and start making more money than ever. I.e. these guys got the credentials to back up what they're saying.

@gilgrissom chugga chugga chugga chugga lmao. Honestly I think I've read five books all the way through in my entire life lmao. My substitute is metal and gangsta rap, but Planet Fitness just has to play the same five pop songs over and over. I think it should be a requirement to play harder music in gyms. You'll get a better workout listening to Til I Collapse than you will a generic corporate manufactured pop song. I wish there was a better gym in my area. A place where you can grunt as loud as you want and drop weights as loud as you want while Drowning Pool blasts. We need the opposite of Planet Fitness to bring balance to the fitness world.

blasted legs today, all killer no filler Glad your gym is still operating! man, you're not kidding! it's a life saver. between that, walking the dog, and the grocery store, I'm doing my best to not venture out this lockdown. so it's good to have that outlet to focus on.

I don't remember where in Ontario you are. Just read about a gym in Ottawa that got busted and everyone got tickets. Hope that wasn't yours!!

I remember last year my local gyms were closed for two months, sucked. I see Canada is taking the California School of "Pandemic" Overreaction.

I've been pretty critical of my own provinces responses in terms of how much has been shut down, etc (Saskatchewan, for context to anyone curious), but man, when I look at how aggressive we're re-opening compared to literally every other province right now, I'm really glad that I'm here compared to Ontario, Alberta, Toba, anywhere else in Canada.

Got the final missing piece for the gym. Scored some beautiful rusty a.f. 1 inch plates for dumbbells. Been looking a year to score some old ass rusty ones at a good price. Dumbbell handles had some rust too. Happy Mitch.

Yeah I got these for $1/lb which is just pre pandemic pricing. I was pretty grateful. Nice dude too

Hope you guys have been well.
Lately fitness has been kicking my ass in a good way. Got back into heavier lifts; I been shoulder pressing 220 lbs on Smith machine press. Chest Pressing 3 45 plates on good days; on off days 2 plates with 35s to compensate the lack of a third plate. Hammer Curls are warmed up with 40's. And getting to 3 reps of 50 lbs. Military Press and so many others are on the big up. The only area; Bench press. Man do I suck there; lol. I stopped benching for over a year; and only Benched with a smith machine. So I am only doing a bench with one 45 plate. Part of it is a balance game; as most weight lifting is about balance and motion before it even becomes a weight thing. I never been good at bench and it's been weak one for me. Everything else; I feel like my strengths shooting off the walls.
I never was big on supplementation; and I had bad experience when I was younger; getting scammed at supplement store. I currently; take my Whey Protein post workout; followed by a Amino Acid called ''OH MINO'' before bed. As well as Multi Vitamin during breakfest; and I am switching pre workouts. I am pretty critical on most supplements; but Amino Acid aide recovery and rebuilding along with multi vitamin that helps fill nutritional voids; which by proxy helps my performance in the gym. And I been in debate of using PreJYM Preworkout; so at the end of the day I don't consider any of these extremes; and all are pretty established supplements. And I feel my performance in the gym has accelerated.
However; the gym and Jiu Jitsu are tough mix. I got my first belt promotion 3 weeks ago. I been learning; however Jiu Jitsu is very frustrating as I see it as a card game rather then fighting someone. However; you need certain level of knowledge and skill and expertise to use the cards and know when; how; and why to apply them. And getting to there is a long road. I rely a lot on my strength; and it sometimes works but sometimes it for sure fails.
Then; making sure my cardio is up. I hate getting smoked in Jiu Jitsu; so I typically switch from long distance run to endurance training bi weekly. In week A; I will train Jiu Jitsu in the morning; then after work I'll go on 1.5 mile run without stopping. Which typically I clock in at around 13:20-13:50 on solid days; I also do this since most Law Enforcement agencies require 1.5 Mile run in 15 minutes. After this I will break into about 2-3 mile walk. Week B I will go to treadmill and where my mask for extra restriction
I will run quarter of mile at about 8:20 mile pace ; and break into walk; and keep repeat going until I hit about 1.10. With slow rise in incline. Then I'll go into walking again and slowly rise to the highest incline; and get up to about 2.50. It doesn't sound like to much; but with a mask; and the start-stop-go it really gets you.
However my conditioning will be interesting; I got back into Law Enforcement. Sadly I do have to go through the entire academy all over again. However I am greatful to God to getting back onto my path in life I think. But i'll be doing PT once or twice a week; and trying to balance that in will be a challenge. But; I am determined to be the most capable officer with defensive tactics; and my fitness; and appearance.
Between this new chance and my last department; I worked for GNC. And I did learn a lot; more about what's BS and what's not so much. And I feel like I understand fitness a lot more; and call me a slow learner. But I feel like a lot of things truly came into perspective for me.
When I was 18; I use to get really mad; I had no definition on my arms. No ball shoulder joint; I was strong as hell and had big arms for a High Schooler. And I kept thinking if I just kept lifting heavier; and eating more eggs or something I'd get definition. I would get picked on by like 160 lb guys who had really defined arms but they're arms were puny and they were overall pretty small.
Truly learning the difference between peoples trainings. That you can train strength; and be a bigger dude and look good; but you won't be aeshetic. And vice versa. (Not saying you can't hybrid the training to some extent) And there's tons of different training styles and mindsets; and it's pretty dumb thing to take 4 years of working out to think about it. But it really dawned on me.
Going issue for me I bite off way more then I can f***ing chew. I been wanting to get into Muy Thai. And by my mid 20's ( I am 20 now) I want to got back to Wrestling school). I wish I had enough energy and time lol. I have way to many interests in Alt History; Action figures; fitness; my love for dogs; here; and spending time with those I am close to; God help me lol.
