www.tmz.com/2016/03/17/sting-wwe-injury-retirement/Sting's wrestling career is over ... TMZ Sports has learned. Long story short ... the wrestling legend messed up his neck real bad at his "WWE Night of Champions" match against Seth Rollins back in September -- and was never able to recover. Sources connected to Sting tell us he was evaluated by several doctors who all agree -- it's just too risky for the wrestler to get back in the squared circle ... so, he's decided to hang up his singlet. We're told the 56-year-old was formally diagnosed with cervical spinal stenosis -- a condition affecting the nerves that can result in extreme pain and discomfort. In fact, it's the same condition that forced fellow WWE superstar Edge to retire in 2011. Our sources tell us Sting may make his official announcement next month at the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony in Texas ... but we're told it's a done deal. As far as Sting's future -- it's up in the air. We're told Sting is open to a non-physical role with the company ... but we're told no formal offer has been made. Sting was a legend in the ring ... rising to superstardom in the late '80s before becoming the face of the WCW and a huge fan favorite in the WWE. #Respect ------------------------------ That sucks although it isn't that shocking considering how injured he got during the NOC match.

If he had cervical spinal stenosis -- the NoC match was just the final straw.
I'm wagering he's been on borrowed time for a while. Retroactively, HAD he went to WWE after WCW, instead of TNA, he probably would have been done a long while before this.
That said, the dude is my #1 favorite wrestler of all time. Sad to hear this news -- but he had absolutely nothing left to prove. He's one of the greats, and everyone knows it. And let's be honest -- he became it without needing WWE one bit.

Fantastic career and he went out the right way by putting over the future. Sucks the way it went down, but accidents happen.

Amazing career.
Went out putting over the best there is today.
Couldn't ask for more. Thank you, Stinger, for everything.

Sucks that it took him so long to get here and its gone too soon, but he did have one hell of a career, put over one of the guys that will carry the company in his final match, and is going into the Hall of Fame, couldn't ask for any more from the guy. Thank you Sting. Wouldn't be opposed to him swinging bats at people on some legends Raw in the future

Not really surprised, honestly. I think it was a pipe dream for him to wrestle another match.
But, hey, he had a pretty great career, and went out with a great match where he put over one of the future faces of the company. I'd be totally open to seeing him as a GM in the future - especially if he came in as Joker Sting to screw with The Authority.

Vince and the whole creative team should be absolutely disgusted with how they booked him. And now theres no redo's. Nothing left to salvage. So they throw him a bone with the HOF. THEIR Hall of Fame. They had a dream match on their hands at Mania 31 and they decided to bury a young star and stroke HHH's ego with Taker and Sting. It takes a lot to get me pissed off, but this is one of the few times im legit mad at the situation

One of the greatest wrestlers of all time, with the crappiest WWE runs of all time.
Way to go, Vince. You managed to do something nobody thought was possible-turn Sting into a joke. I know people will remember his NWA/WCW run more than anything, but his WWE stint will always be a blemish on an otherwise impeccable legacy.
That being said, I hope he enjoys his retirement and royalties from all the Sting merch they're gonna panhandle down the road.

I guess people are pulling a WWE and forgetting his TNA run? You know, where he was made to look like a joke tons of times? Sometimes worse than anything WWE did booking wise?

I was really holding out for another Sting match - we never did get our WWE Sting "Moment" that he deserved. I've really become disgusted with 2015/2016 WWE. So many blown opportunities, so little that interests me. Such a rich history that they fail to capitalize on again, and again, and again. They refuse to use the Legends well.... and they fail to build the younger guys into stars..... I've never been this distant from WWE.

Damn. My second all time favorite. I hate to see him go out like that. It was a pleasure to be able to watch him for so many years.
Thank you, Sting.

Damn it! I thought he would've had at least one more match, oh well it's better for him to retire and stay as healthy as possible. It's kind of a shame we'll never get that Sting Vs Undertaker match at WM.

Sigh. TNA would have looked after him. They kept him safe for so long.

Shame it has to end this way but it's good he did at least get that run and a Wrestlemania moment.

Thank you Sting for the years of first rate entertainment. He will always be looked at as one of the most charasmatic talented guys to ever step into the ring and a bonafide draw. He was able to evolve both his character and his in ring skill during his run. One of the elite of the elite in my opinion. And even , though i would have liked his WWE run to have been booked far better, i am glad he made the jump so his career could come to a close on a bigger stage than it would have otherwise. Congratulations Stinger on an unparalleled career and all the success you've earned during it.
