UPDATE: The diary is now entering 1991 with Sting as World Champion and Mr. Perfect as IC Champion.
UPDATE: The diary is now entering 1990 with the "Incredible" Hulk Hogan as World Champion and Jake Roberts as IC Champion.
UPDATE: The diary is now entering 1989 with Ted Dibiase as World Champion, Hulk Hogan as a HEEL, Ric Flair in the WWF and more.
UPDATE: The diary is now entering 1988 with Hulk Hogan as World Champion, and Randy Savage as IC Champion.
UPDATE: The diary has now focused attention on Ted Dibiase as a bigger heel.
UPDATE: This diary has now entered 1987 with Andre as the World Champion after he defeated Mr. Wonderful for the title.1986 is when the Wrestling boom had reached its height. The Big Event was massive in Toronto at the Exhibition proving Wrestling was bigger than ever and the Hulk-Orndorff feud was legendary that its success couldn't be repeated till 1989. People still saw Wrestling at the time as "real", though since 1985 the big question was becoming more common (thanks to an NBC piece on Wrestling in '85)...was it fake? 1986 could be remembered as part of the "Rock'n Wrestling" Era starting in 1983, but the era also coincides with Hulk Hogan's first World title win at Madison Square Gardens on January 24th, 1984. From there the relationship between MTV-WWF plus NBC-WWF was stronger than ever as Vince took advantage of it and cable TV to push WWF nationally (invading the territorial system in the process). Rock n' Wrestling Connection would soon fade as a legitimate term that was used by the WWF, and it may be proper to end that Era in 1987 at Wrestlemania III. The era was so big that MTV hosted two major events first with "The Brawl to End it All" on July 23, 1984, which is still considered the most-watched program in MTV history, and second the "War to Settle the Score" on February 18th, 1985. Vince further took advantage of actor Mr. T's and Hulk Hogan's popularity that would lead to the main event at Wrestlemania 1, which was make a it or break it event that became a success. Later that year, The Wrestling Classic in November '85 was another successful PPV event (that I plan to bring back TWC in this diary), but it was the only one (a precurser to KoTR but it doesn't have to be going forward). We also have to think about the "character" of Hulk Hogan in 1984-1986 (he wasn't always yellow and red and the Real American theme only started in 86). I have to argue it was "kinda" different. Fans connected with him more, he was first billed as a big guy "from the streets" making it to the top and now has to defend the Championship of the World. The invincibility of the Hulkster wasn't totally there yet because EVERYONE was a threat, guys like Mr. Wonderful, King Kong Bundy, and Don Muraco were legit threats that made you feel at any time Hulk could lose the title. After Wrestlemania III...the character became more of an invincible superhero from a cartoon that you knew would always win (heck he was a cartoon in Rock'n Wrestlin circa late 85-87). This diary is a retelling of Hulkamania in 1986 with an alternate Wrestlemania 2 card and more. The focus of the diary will be mostly on Hulk Hogan and his feuds, but not completely ignoring the rest of the feuds out there. At the same time I want to kick off 1986 with Hulk Hogan feuding with Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka. Snuka a big time face who left in July 1985, but seemed he was still with the WWF maybe under contract? For example he was in the cartoon when it premiered in September and was wrestling in NJPW (though the WWF/NJPW alliance ended in October of 85) before going to the AWA sometime in 1986. In this timeline he returns as a HEEL (his original character).

Saturday Night's Main Event January 4th, 1986 USF Sun Done, Tampa, Florida Hosts: Vince McMahon and Jesse "the Body" Ventura (for most of the show) Roddy Piper, Bob Orton and Jesse Ventura def. Hillbilly Jim, Uncle Elmer and Cousin Luke in a Six-man tag_______________________________ Hulk Hogan (c) (w/Junkyard Dog) vs. Terry Funk (w/Jimmy Hart) for the WWF World Heavyweight Championship.
During the match Hulk Hogan hits the ropes three times while stomping on Funk's back. Funk finally gets on the outside as the crowd is going wild and the camera is literally shaking. Funk throws a chair inside and gets in. Later Funk has a chinlock and gives Hulk a low blow without the referee looking. Terry gets to the top rope and Hulk shakes the ropes for him to drop. Hulk hits a headbutt and the Axe Bomber lariat clothesline. From a corner lands a diving elbow. Funk rolls on the outside. Later Funk gets the advantage as the referee is distracted by Jimmy Hart and Funk chokes out Hogan with laces which he then hides it with a chinlock but puts the pressure on. Funk hits the piledriver for the pin to two. Hogan finally gets up and starts to Hulk up. He tosses Funk to the ropes for an elbow smash, and later the big boot but Funk falls on the outside. Hart tries to interfere in the match, but Hogan lands another Axe Bomber for the win. Winner: Hulk Hogan via pinfall to retain the WWF World Heavyweight Championship._______________________________ Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka makes an appearance backstage with Mean Gene: Gene: I can't believe it what a match that was and with me at this time is a man who has returned to the WWF, ladies and gentlemen Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka welcome back! Snuka: I don't need your welcomes Gene, I've come back after my travels to Japan to realize that there is one thing I have left to do here in the WWF before I go back to Japan... Gene: And what's that? Snuka: To become the next Heavyweight Champion of the World... Suddenly Hulk Hogan comes in with Junkyard Dog Hogan: O ya Gene baby did you see that what a win...can you believe it... Snuka: (looks pissed off) Hey hey this is my time... Hogan: Well Terry Funk you got what you deserved brother... Snuka: Hey golden boy step back. Hogan: Hey I didn't mean to intrude Superfly... Suddenly Snuka attacks Hogan and clotheslines Junkyard Dog. He grabs the title Belt and wacks it over his Hulk's back. Snuka: I'm sick and tired of this poster boy champion trying to take my thunder away. You're going down Hulk I want a match...I want the title shot it was mine I was supposed to beat the Iron Sheik for the title! It was supposed to be Snukamania boy... Vince: (on commentary) I can't believe what just happened! Why would he do that! WWF Championship Wrestling January 11th, 1986 Hosts: Vince McMahon and Bruno Sammartino
Note: For those unfamiliar with this program, this was the flagship TV program for the from 1972-1986 before Superstars of Wrestling (September 1986-2001) replaced it. Also I won't be mentioning the taping dates like in my previous diaries from now on unless they are needed. Matches:Junkyard Dog & George "the Animal" Steele def. jobbers via pinfall

Promos or Interviews:Paul Orndorff, Tito Santana, Orton & Piper and Ricky Steamboat Hulk Hogan int. with Mean Gene: Gene: What a controversy last week, I can't believe what happened when Jimmy Snuka made his return to the WWF only to attack you champ. Hogan: Well you know something Mean Gene, controversy isn't the right word, ya I know what the Superfly is all about brother, with everything he's done, everything he has done in the WWF I can't believe what has happened. I can't believe he would attack me with my own championship belt. All he had to was ask me man...ask me for a title shot! That's all! And I would've given it to him brother. You know Mean Gene I'm just wondering what kind of mind set he has, is he out here for the fans? Or is he out here for himself and only himself? Is he wanting this shot for the money? Questions just questions is all I'm left with. Gene: Well I can't speak for Jimmy Snuka but he has issued out a challenge to you and will you take it? Hogan: Like I've always said before, I'll take on anyone brother. But this one...this one is different. Because I feel it, this guy is crazy enough to step in the ring and take high risks man. This is a guy who leaped from the top of a steel cage for a big splash because he'll do anything to win. And that is a dangerous man brother, the most dangerous I'm ever going to have to face so yes Superfly, I'm ready to take you on brother. Gene: Well there you have it folks Hulk Hogan has accepted the challenge from Jimmy Snuka!

Adrian Adonis (w/Jimmy Hart) def. Junkyard Dog via DQ
George Steel (w/Lou Albano) def. Barry O via submissionHulk Hogan (c) vs. Randy "Macho Man" Savage (w/Miss Elizabeth) for the WWF Heavyweight Championship
Hogan gets in the ring and Randy gets the early advantage. He whips Hogan to the ropes for a diving elbow and whips him to a corner for another diving elbow. Hogan counters and irish whip and hits a clothesline on Randy. Hogan gets a chinlock, Randy counters with an armlock, they exchange a few holds till Hogan whips Randy to the ropes for a shoulderblock. Hogan bodyslams him and gets to a second rope to the top, but Randy gets up and dropkicks Hogan who falls on the outside. Randy starts beating on Hogan, but Hogan smashes Randy's head on the apron and whips him to the ringpost. Randy is outcold. Hogan gets in and gets back out to break the count. Elizabeth is begging Hogan to leave Randy alone, but he pushes her aside and lifts Randy over his shoulder to ram him in the ringpost. Elizabeth pleads so Hogan tosses him back in the ring. Suddenly the crowd starts cheering as they see Jimmy Snuka walks down the aisle. Jesse: What's Jimmy Snuka doing out here Gorilla? Gorilla: I can't say but he has no business being out here, it's a championship match. Randy manages to counter Hogan and land a sleeperhold. Snuka is at ringside as the referee starts asking him to leave. Snuka doesn't as Hogan gets out of the sleepercount and lands a german suplex for the pin to two. Hogan is up and notices Snuka. WWF Tuesday Night Titans February 1st, 1985 Hosts: Vince McMahon and Lord Alfred HayesMatches: Don Muraco def. Mario Mancini via pinfall
Hillbilly Jim vs. jobber via pinfall
Ken Patera & Big John Studd def. Andre the Giant & SD Jones via Countout
Nikolai Volkoff & Iron Sheik def. Steve Lombardi & Mario ManciniGuests: Hillbilly Gym and Granny Kim Bobby "the Brain" Heenan ________________________ Vince: Alright our next guest is the legendary Freddie Blassie who has some big announcement he'd like to make Blassie: (comes out) Who are you calling legendary, you call legendary to those who are retired and I'm ready for one last hurrah before I do retire...let's say with my big announcement I'll have the greatest retirement package in the history of professional wrestling. Vince: Well since you've asked to be on the show to make a big announcement, I would like to know what this announcement is? Blassie: First of all there was a time that I managed a blonde-haired promising young man, six-foot-eight, 320 pounds a guy who betrayed me and now is at the top of the mountain but that was because of me. He would be nothing without me, a nobody. And now there's a guy who wants make it to the top of that mountain, a guy who embodies what professional wrestling is all about. Vince: Just who are we speaking about? Blassie: I'm talking about a man who'll defeat Hulk Hogan...a man who will become the next Heavyweight Champion of the World...that's right I've signed on Jimmy Snuka and I'll be his manager. Vince: I don't believe this! Snuka: (walks out to some heat from the audience) You better believe it McMahon Hayes: Mr. Snuka you are one of the greatest wrestlers on the face of this earth, and to have this man as your manager, I am quite astonished... Blassie: Ah shut your mouth ha...Jimmy Snuka realized the truth, he realized that he won't be able to get the World title this way. He needs alliances, he needs guys who know the ins and outs of the ring and all the backstage politics that go behind the scene because I know how it is. WWF Officials have treated Jimmy Snuka unfairly for years. It's been two years Hulk Hogan...two years that you held that World title, and he was your friend, and what did you do? Not once did you offer a shot and now it's time for Jimmy Snuka to get the World title and bring professional wrestling back from the brink because of the likes of you. Vince: Jimmy Snuka you're a fan favorite around the world, why didn't you just ask for the title shot? Snuka: Because I needed to send a message to Hulk Hogan, I needed him to understand my frustration. He thinks that because he is in the spotlight, that he's got all the merchandise and big money coming in now that all of a sudden he thinks of himself as the greatest? What makes him so great? Has Hulk Hogan ever gone to a whole hour in the ring? I just don't think he could last! Does he remember Bruno Sammartino going 70 minutes to a draw with Gorilla Monsoon? Or how about guys who also deserve to be the world champ right now...guys like Greg Valentine and the Magnificent Muraco who can go the distance at an hour in? The blood sweat and tears, their buckets of them and these are the all-time greats, I am an all-time great and will become the greatest of all time. Vince: Well Hulk Hogan has beaten the best around... Snuka: (stands up) He's never beaten me! He could never go the distance, he could never last in the ring with me because I'll keep on going I'll go on for as long as it takes. I want a match where I can beat Hulk Hogan at his best, I want him to go to the distance and tire out because there is no way he can pin me. I want a match with no DQ, no timelimits... Vince: Well you have to admit Freddie Blassie that Hulk Hogan... Snuka: Hey I'm talking here, I'm sick of you suits (grabs a hold of Vince) Vince: Hey hey someone get this guy off of me... Blassie calms Snuka down as they get booed off the set and Vince gets a hold of himself, fixing his tie and Lord Alfred Hayes starts talking about it. Hayes: I can't believe that happened, we'll be back for a commercial break.

Snuka tosses Jim into the ring as the bell rings.. Hillbilly Jim is completely out of it. Snuka gets to the top rope and hits his diving splash finisher for the pin. Snuka breaks the pin at two as he starts to get more heat from the crowd. Snuka hits the ropes and lands a knee drop to the head. He lifts Jim for a backbreaker. Snuka starts to taunt the fans till he gets to the top rope once again and hits another diving splash, but decides not to pin him. He starts to sit at the top rope looking at Jim. The referee checks on Jim and the bell rings. Winner: Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka via decisionSnuka who is still sitting at the top rope has a cold stare, his eyes opened wide as he gets angry as WWF Officials try to help Jim up. WWF at Madison Square Garden February 17th, 1986 Live on MSG Network in New York (20,225 sell out) Hosts: Gorilla Monsoon and Lord Alfred HayesGorilla reminds everyone that Wrestlemania 2 is on its way on Sunday April 6th, 1986 at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena. Note: Wrestlemania 2 was actually in three different arenas and on a Monday, this has obviously changed in this timeline. Instead Vince decides to keep it in LA, as he's already done the East Coast with Wrestlemania 1, he now wants to take Wrestlemania 2 to the West Coast to show that WWF dominates the East and West. Matches:Ricky Steamboat (w/King Tonga) def. Don Muraco (w/Mr. Fuji) in a Martial Arts mtch
Adrian Adonis (w/Jimmy Hart) def. George "the Animal" Steel (w/Lou Albano) via DQSegments: Piper's Pit shown Live. Piper: How time flies o my I can't begin to even start...where do I start wow what I've seen over the years and it was just a year ago when I battled it out with this man...Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka to no avail...and now...now he wants a title shot for the World Heavyweight Championship. Now...now he's got Freddie Blassie with him as his manager (scratches head). What a difference a year makes ha...that just goes to show you that life is unpredictable ha...life is crazy so how about I bring these two out here... Snuka: (walks out with Freddie Blassie as fans who were initially cheering are now booing) Hey Piper. Piper: (has a huge smirk and laughs) This is crazy this is unbelievable I can't even begin...where do I even begin because let's be honest out here, Jimmy Snuka what has really gotten into you... Snuka: For two years! Two long years I've watched Hulk Hogan holding that Championship belt that really belongs to me. For two years this guy has been going from town to town thinking he's the best out there. I've seen this guy on the cover of Sports Illustrated, where was my cover shoot? Where was it Roddy Piper? Piper: (laughs) I'm liking this new side of you Snuka you know as much as we despise each other I'm liking it ha... Blassie: That's right Mr. Piper, guys like Jimmy Snuka, look Jimmy Snuka has paid his dues. He's got quality and respect for tradition. Unlike Hulk Hogan...look Hulk Hogan is a man who has disrespected Jimmy Snuka time and time again. Hulk Hogan made sure that Snuka would never have a chance and that's why Snuka was forced to leave. Piper: I had no idea that Snuka was forced to leave...no idea. Snuka: That's right, you used me Hulk Hogan, when Wrestlemania came around you put me in your corner instead of putting me in a match. You wanted to keep me away from TV and played your politics with the higher ups so you got me thrown out of the country. Piper: He got you thrown out of the country (laughs)? I thought you went to Japan to wrestle? Snuka: Hulk Hogan knew that I was the best around, Hulk Hogan knew that the fans loved them some Superfly. But no, he got what he wanted and instead of wrestling here he forced me to find another place to go. Actions have consequences, he just never thought about what would happen to me? What would happen to all the guys in the back who can't get a shot because Hulk's too busy with being famous. Blassie: Hulk Hogan has no respect for anyone and brings anyone who is better than him and more popular than him...brings them down. Piper: Now I know that Hulk Hogan has accepted the challenge, but I have yet to see you get in the ring with him. Snuka: He's afraid...very afraid. He knows that if we step in the ring, he's going to lose that title belt. Piper: For once I can't believe I'm saying this ha...I have to agree with you. At the end of the interview Snuka has his hands out for a shake as Piper scratches his head and finally does it to much heat.
