Evil Tatanka
It was at Royal Rumble 2006 in which Tatanka would make his full comeback to the company. He would last a good nearly 15 minutes all the while having the crowd behind em. This would lead to him landing a roster spot on Smackdown with him then teaming with Matt Hardy to take on then SD tag champs MNM at No Way out that year in Baltimore. They were unsuccessful in reaching their goal. Following a brief resurgence in popularity he would drop down the ladder pretty fast as he pretty much became a jobber. He would lose to guys throughout the year from guys like Great Khali,Sylvain Grenier and The Miz of all people. Stemming from all these loses they would go with the losing streak angle with the Native American becoming more and more frustrated each passing week.
He would finally snap that October on SD in a tag match with Lashley against William Regal and Dave Taylor. Following another loss, Tatanka would turn heel once again as he attacked Lashley. Good heel turn I thought. Way better than back in 94. The following week on SD he would come out in full face paint and would cut a promo on Lashley and the fans proclaiming he will ''unleash a new warrior '' on the WWE. This really didn't go anywhere as the feud was quietly dropped soon after with Tatanka continuing on as heel but still in the jobber role. He would be released that January.
Overall.... The heel turn here had me invested in Tatanka for the first time in his career. The full face paint was a nice touch. He wasn't going to go anywhere but man I wish they at least gave it a chance.

Tatanka looked really out of place in the Ruthless Aggression Era and he was just there to put over younger talent. During the time he was a heel in late 2006, Smackdown was often pre-empted for other sporting events in my area, so I dont really remember much about that gimmick.

The only big match I can recall him having during that brief heel run is with Benoit prior to SSeries that year.

Great write up my good man.
I thought it was cool when he came back and thought he was still decent in the ring. Until you posted this I completely forgot about his short heel run!

Tatanka was my first favorite wrestler ever. I loved him as a kid and it broke my heart when he turned on Lex at Summerslam and became a bad guy.
I went nuts when he returned at the Royal Rumble in 2006. The crowd gave him a nice pop! Most were probably surprised that he turned that cameo into an active roster spot for most of the year. Even then, I knew he was only there to put some people over, but he could still have a decent match. The heel turn didn't mean much although his makeover was pretty cool with the updated "evil" war paint.
Never forget, The Miz scored his first ever win in the WWE against Tatanka. Just look where his career went. 😁
