If collectors keep talking about retros, hopefully Mattel might bring them back sooner than later, if at all.

Well, I just blew nearly £200 on retros to have plenty of body part choices for customs. My wife wouldn’t be happy if she knew....😬

So Retro series 10 has reached the UK, but in far few numbers than ordered by the online retailers. Shop are sold-out already, and Toys & Masks are listing today I think.
Have Mattel produced less of this series? If so, was that because they were ending the line? I'm guessing they aren't holding back extra quantities for Target and Walmart...

Wrestling shop sold out really quickly. I was fortunate enough to get my order in in time. I remember having a feeling series 10 would be it, and saying as long as I have Diesel I consider it a success. I’m not overly downbeat about them going on hiatus.
But of course if they came back I’d buy them.

But of course if they came back I’d buy them. Same with me. I checked at maybe 10 am and they were up so I went to buy them, spotted the price increase so I looked around for a bit to see if they were just price-gouging, but then I thought maybe it could be due to the poor state of the pound right now that maybe Mattel were charging them more or whatever, so I just went ahead and bought it since I don't want to take any chances on Retros right now. But after I got past the Paypal page when it returned me to Wrestling Shop then their site was down for maintenance or something so my order didn't go through. Got it done in the end shortly afterwards thankfully; I would've been crazed as hell if I'd missed-out full-stop, never mind because of something as stupid as the site being down for two minutes or something. Still a lot to pay for the set, but I'd pay more than normal anyway if that was what was necessary for Mattel to keep the line going in the future so I didn't see the point in pretending that my stupidity with this line had any limits

I ended up missing out on series 10 I really had no desire what so ever to have Elias or Woken Matt Hardy so paying £52 essentially for just two figures was completely out of the question. It sucks I was not able to add Diesel to my retro collection, but at the end of the day with how horribly this line has been handled by Mattel I am really not all that surprised.
Overall after 10 series while I like the figures I have, I have to say that for me personally this line has been a massive and I mean massive failure. It was ok, but it could have been so much more. Again the figures I have picked up I like and some of them like Iron Shiek, Goldust and Undertaker I think are flat out awesome, but Mattel clearly had no idea what they were doing with this line.
Rather than being all down in the dumps over it I am looking at the positives. I got some figures I think are cool, I could not be any more excited for the Masters of the Universe line and hopefully, hopefully, the line really is just on hiatus and Mattel are going to realize they screwed the pooch big time with it and come out swinging with a full relaunch.

They did say it was prob best it went on hiatus
I think they realised it was too unfocused.
If it does come back I think it will be 100% aimed at modern adult collectors. All goldeb era, new gen and attitude era (maybe early ruthless too) and closer to original artwork

Anyone know when the Mattel licence with WWE expires?

Any news on why the Retro Series is ending? I thought they were selling like crack? The official word is that the line is just on hiatus, not completely cancelled. Action Figure Attack has said many times that they’re working on bringing the line back at some stage with some changes to sort-out the issues they’ve had (primarily distribution would be my guess) - no idea how likely it is that the line will return, but I do have faith that the WWE team at Mattel are fans of the line and want it to work, but it remains to be seen if that is enough. The MajorWF podcast continues to push for the Retros to return, and both the UK online retailers have tweeted their support for the line (no idea if Ringside or any other international retailers have made any public statement on these), and there’s a hashtag that’s been active since SDCC - not sure what more can be done to try to influence Mattel, other than of course buying-up what’s left if you have these in high street stores, particularly in the US and maybe Canada, as I’m sure north America is the priority, certainly since both the UK retailers have reported not getting their full orders of series 9 or 10. There’s also the question of timing to bring it back I think - from what I can see the WWE licence runs until 2021; hopefully both sides will agree to extend their relationship beyond then, but if the relationship ends there then there’s not much time to bring it back. Seems very unlikely even in the best case scenario that we’ll get a new series before SDCC next year, maybe even in 2020 at all, and then we’re in the final year where I doubt Mattel would want to be launching anything new if the licence isn’t being extended. But obviously I’m just speculating. We live in hope.

But obviously I’m just speculating. We live in hope. Bill said that Retros were definitely not coming back in 2020. That comment was what made me think that it probably wont come back at all because by then it will be forgotten about (by most) and they will be onto other things. Just my opinion, but think about it. IF it ever comes back then it will probably be at least 2 years from now. How many people will still have the same burning interest in them? I know I will, but I was always a HUGE supporter of the Retros. I think it will always be an option on the back burner for Mattel. But if other lines such as MOTU do well then they will certainly stay where the money is. As someone said before here, their main target is, and always will be, kids. And rightfully so. And I'm assuming that Mattel now knows that adult collectors are the ones who are most interested in the Retro line, kids not so much. So all we can do is wait, and yeah that sucks. I'm guessing the value of a lot of retros will skyrocket in the next 6 months. Especially ones that weren't released to retail (or not much at all) like series 9 and 10.

Wouldn't it be interesting if Hasbro won the licence? Hasbro should (at the very least!) be looking closely at the social media around WWE figures to see whether there's any lines they could pitch as a possible "bid winner"
obviously the Basic and Elite lines are the key focus, especially the Elite line, but I'd laugh if Hasbro did pitch to bring back a Retro line so it goes full circle if they won LOL

Fascinating, and I've always wondered, does Hasbro still have the original molds? I've listened to some reps from MTH, Lionel (toy train companies), talking about how expensive toolings are to create and how they really never destroy them since they're so costly.

Wishful thinking about Hasbro getting the figure license. IMO, Mattel will keep it for a long time.

I didn’t know Bill had been so definite on that; I must’ve missed that comment whilst I was travelling. I sort of get the impression that he’s the least excited by the line compared to the other Mattel guys we hear about, but maybe I’m wrong about that, or it’s just his natural demeanor, I don’t know. But yes, I’d agree with your analysis if 2020 is completely out then it looks even more bleak. Certainly I’d think any young fans who liked the figures will have moved on from them by 2021, which would just leave us again - and it seems like we’re not enough. There’s also the question of timing to bring it back I think - from what I can see the WWE licence runs until 2021; hopefully both sides will agree to extend their relationship beyond then, but if the relationship ends there then there’s not much time to bring it back. I spent a lot of years wishing Hasbro would get the licence back when I was a kid/teenager But now that we have a company in Mattel that have created this Retro line and got me interested in figures again then I’d probably feel safer with Mattel keeping the licence since there’s a chance of the Retros returning, whilst there’s no guarantee the original Hasbros would return as a side line if they got the licence back. I think we all agree that the primary product from a 2021 Hasbro wouldn’t resemble the early 90s Hasbro figures, but as obvious a sideline of “real” Retros under Hasbro would be, I’m not sure I’d take that gamble. But of course if the Retros are really done forever then there’s nothing to lose for us from a change of licence-holder. Wouldn't it be interesting if Hasbro won the licence? Hasbro should (at the very least!) be looking closely at the social media around WWE figures to see whether there's any lines they could pitch as a possible "bid winner" obviously the Basic and Elite lines are the key focus, especially the Elite line, but I'd laugh if Hasbro did pitch to bring back a Retro line so it goes full circle if they won LOL

I've listened to some reps from MTH, Lionel (toy train companies), talking about how expensive toolings are to create and how they really never destroy them since they're so costly. That’s interesting to hear; whether that would apply to a company as large as Hasbro might be the question. I’d think they’d keep such items from old lines, but I don’t know. When the Retros started I wondered if there would be copyright issues for Mattel to navigate for the figures and actions, but I don’t think I ever heard anyone speak about that. The message we got was that nothing was off-limits in terms of the actions, despite us not getting some key ones recreated, and some alterations were made to the actions we did get. If the original Hasbros were copyrighted then maybe Hasbro had let them expire or something which Mattel might’ve tied-down for the Retros - I don’t know how such matters apply to lines like these. Wishful thinking about Hasbro getting the figure license. IMO, Mattel will keep it for a long time. This would be my bet as well.
