This would be the first major feud I ever saw. Flair was legendary in promo’s during this. It’s funny looking back but it seemed that the WWF was pushing that it was as shocking that Liz would have had more than one sexual partner in her life at that point. I’m not sure if it was because Liz had always been pushed as innocent or if it were cultural attitudes at the time, but nowadays a woman having had more than one relationship by the time they were in their twenties wouldn’t even be worth a mention.
Agree with how the personal tone really added the heat to this. I’m not sure if it was intentional but Savage winning the belt at WM8 with a handful of tights was great. It was almost like Savage beat “the dirtiest player” at his own game, adding another layer to this.
Hulk gets a lot of praise for his selling, but Savage was his equal on that front throughout this. There was a lot going about at the time about how “fake” wrestling was, but if you told me that Ric and Liz really did happen and that Savage legitimately hurt his knee in both title matches, I would believe you. I was never really a Savage fan, but I wouldn’t be the fan I am without this feud.

These two were absolute gold together I loved the storyline and was fully invested. I leapt of my seat when Savage beat Flair for the title. I was there live at SummerSlam 1992 and seeing Flair and Savage getting at it again was really cool. This storyline was so good that you never even noticed that Hogan was not the champion.
I do not think their run in WCW is anywhere near as good as what they did in 1992, but it was still a lot of fun.
If I were to do a top WrestleMania matches of all time, that match would 100 percent feature on the list.

Another thing to add to this is that I thought Flair and Perfect were so good together that I actually had a hard time buying Perfect turning on Flair the way he did. Do not get me wrong, I love Mr.Perfect, but him and Flair felt so real together that I never got fully invested when he turned face on him. Rather than meaning that as a negative though, I think it speaks for how great the two of them were as they went up against Savage.

Nowadays heels and faces switch with no good reasons given.

Coming up on the CFD... Great teams. Too bad neither got a run with the tag titles. I've often wondered if the original plan was for the Rockers to beat the Hart Foundation at the SNME then drop the belts to Power & Glory around the the Royal Rumble in 1991 (or WM7) then have LOD beat Power & Glory to become champs. Seems like that would have been great. Though, I did like that the Hart Foundation got a good, long run with the tag titles in 1990/91.

Rockers vs Power and GloryIt all started between these two during the Summer of 1990 on Superstars. It was after a match where the Rockers helped out an out of it Paul Roma only to be pushed away. This would bring out Hercules who was revealed on commentary to be a good friend of Romas. While the Rockers wanted cooler heads to prevail both Herc and Roma didnt so with that the attack was on.Nice heel turn here that came outa nowhere. Power and Glory would be formed shortly after this with the Slickster becoming their manager. The big showdown between the teams would come at SSam that year where the Rockers coming in were at a disadvantage as Michaels had a bum knee coming in.P&G would capitalize on this with it turning into a handicap match with the heels going over with their spectacular power-plex finisher. That Fall Marty had to go in alone for a little bit while his partner healed up but the feud would climax at SSeries that year when the Visionaries would defeat the Vipers in a clean sweep. Even though the feud was over here, they did interact in 1991. Particular in the tag team battle royal on Superstars in February to see who faces the Harts at Mania for the belts. They also had matches in Japan and the UK that Summer and Fall respectively. Overall...Solid feud here between two great teams of the era.Putting Herc with Roma felt so random but damn if it didnt work out in the end. Slick the manager was the icing on the cake.

I always got a kick out of Slick, but the Twin Towers aside, I always felt his charges were never destined to achieve much. P&G would have been much better perceived with Jimmy Hart as their manager, or even going alone.
Am I right in thinking Michaels knee was a cover story because he was badly hungover and they needed a way to limit his involvement in the SSlam match?
This had the potential for a longer feud and could have really established P&G as a threat.

I remember reading Michaels said it was a motorcycle accident but I think the legit reason was he blew his ACL at a house show.

Fun feud, wish it lasted longer. Like I said above, I would have loved to have seen these two teams have a run with the titles. They probably would have had LOD not signed with the WWF. Once that happened, I don't think Vince had any plans for anyone else to have the tag belts. Had LOD never came to the WWF, I could see Power and Glory beating the Hart Foundation for the belts at WM7 then lose them later to the Rockers, maybe around Summer Slam or even the Royal Rumble in 1992. It seemed that they were really pushing the Rockers to be the team of the 90s, I remember Piper saying that a number of times when he was an announcer. As for the feud, it kind of ended abruptly, I don't remember seeing a match where the Rockers got revenge for the Summer Slam attack. I really liked the Summer Slam match, that was a clever way to get the match out even though Shawn was injured. It really built up Power and Glory as a new heel tag team, and Marty put on a very good performance.

Michaels selling the knee was fantastic and Marty doing his best to survive was great storytelling. Just a strong showing for P&G out the gate. Shame they didnt reach those bigger heights.
