In light of everything that has transpired lately, it is clear, the WWE is to blame for lack of characters in the line. I imagine they must frustrate Mattel's creative beyond belief. They probably only contract the cheapest legends and past superstars. They once allowed Jakks to pursue talent. Now we get Beefcake and Doink and Scott hall rehashes. My zeal for this line is waning with the lack of legends or past wrestlers. My wife and my wallet thank the WWE for this. The competition is going to take the lead which, quite frankly, is the best thing possible right now. Only when the WWE is losing will it change it's ways.

This thread is a little....wild. But I get what you are saying.
My love for figures has only grown over the last year or two. I have a lot of interest in non-wrestling toy lines for the first time in my life. I'm following a lot of toy and figure news and find myself going through toys in retail that I never thought I would be interested in.
But, my WWE figure interest is at an all-time low. I am barely buying any WWE figures because a few reasons, but character choice is certainly up there with it. I'm also very disinterested in the television product so its kind of soured my interest in getting current roster members. I also am having a harder time being disappointed with releases. Most recently, I was really excited for that new Flashback Trish until I saw the Bratz doll headscan. This is just an example of a long term problem that I feel Mattel has struggled with emensally. They make so many poor decisions in these figure lines that I am just disinterested in all of it. I am still loading up on other figures but my WWE Mattel buying days are running thin.
The only must have's for me anymore is the Ultimate Edition line. But I don't even find myself interested in buying figures of my favorites anymore.

I am not sure what Mattel is doing. For example, they can do 12" figures, why not do some higher end pieces and see if fans bite?
I am not sure the details, but my involvement with Hasbro and what I know, only classic characters and colors sell. There is only so much you can do, hence Ultimate, True FX and possibly 12" figures are the best routes for sales or repurchases.

It takes two people to sign a deal. We don’t know who all they’ve made offers to only to have been declined. We also don’t know who may be under a deal or have been in the past that Mattel never got around to making.

Either they don’t want to sign people or people don’t want to sign for them.

Mattel early on had the ability to do direct deals. WWE killed that.
The Legends line is a good indicator of either how few Legends they have signed or Mattel really doesn't want variety and they take the easy route. We get Jake and Hall within series of each other (my Target currently has Razor and Hall at the moment warming) and the leaked line ups with DX feels like a huge punt.

They probably don’t see any financial gain in most of the legends and past superstars.
These jobbers from the past that people want figures of most likely aren’t going to sell merch well, so why would WWE waste time trying and wasting money creating the merch if they can’t make a profit?
That’s why they bring Goldberg back. He sells, he makes them profit.

It’s not about jobbers. There are many legends that haven’t been made in 10 years that deserve new figures. Demolition, LOD, Rick Martel, Akeem/One Man Gang, King Kong Bundy to name a few. Many weren’t collecting when those were released and they would be huge sellers in the Legends line.

Given today's collector climate, yeah they would he huge sellers....and then hugely scalped right away. It's not just the boring television product and lack of interesting current roster talent that has made me collect less Mattel figures. It's also the scalping, the constant decision for store exclusivity for retailers that don't sell outside of the US, and price increases. It's just frankly become annoying and expensive to continue this hobby.

Like they’re making a Goon, Chief Jay Strongbow, they’ve made Mae Young, D-Lo Brown, BushWhackers, Warlord. The mid carders seem to sell better than the ones they make over and over and over.

Like they’re making a Goon, Chief Jay Strongbow, they’ve made Mae Young, D-Lo Brown, BushWhackers, Warlord. The mid carders seem to sell better than the ones they make over and over and over. They’re making these lower card stars in much lower quantities, so the collectors that want them can get them, and the majority of buyers that want the top guys can get them too. Remember, this is still an action figure line mostly supported by the younger crowd, not us. Every day another kid gets old enough to want his or her first Roman Reigns figure. Sometimes the stores order too much for the demand, while other times they might order the same amount and nothing warms the pegs. There’s no exact science to making it work, just trends that manufacturers and distributors try and follow. And let’s stop with the scalping argument. Now more than ever it’s mostly about the quantity produced, not the figure itself. Some of these people might not even follow that particular brand, but frequent forums like this one to see what we’re all excited about so they know what to go hunting for to try and turn a profit.

List of Jakks Only wrestlers with no Mattel releases. (Note: this is wrestler NOT character)
List of Mattel only wrestler with no JAKKS release (Excluding post WWE Legends line)
There's some name(s) in that JAKKS list Id love to have...But outside of The Goon there isnt a name on that Mattel list I would remove to be replaced.
(I could be missing someone but this was just off the top of my head & looking at my collection)

I don’t have a lot of room to complain. I swore to the Wrestling Figure Gods if Mattel produced a Ken Shamrock I’d buy as much as I could along with some of his formidable opponents and I did just that. I’d love Dynamite Kid, I would. KoKo. Hercules. King Harley Race. All of them and more. But I got my Shamrock. Can’t complain.

It is what it is, even if it's really put a dent in my buying and overall interest in collecting. WWE has clearly shifted gears in their financial thinking and overall marketing direction, and I don't see that changing any time soon. When they have hundreds of current wrestlers under contract, there is only so much they're going to invest in additional contracts to fill out product lines, be it cards, or games, or toys. It's all about ROI, and it's a calculated decision.
Time will tell what that means for their market share in toys, and we'll never really know how it matches up dollar for dollar. There's definitely a market opportunity for other companies, be it Jazwares or smaller indies to take advantage of. And so far it looks like they are with decent success. But whether that has any direct impact on WWE's bottom line or their partners? We'll never know.

Dude…that’s just plain silly. Owen was a great talent, but he was mid-carder. Mattel producing Steamboat and Savage in a Legends line has been a far bigger deal.
