I feel like the torsos got more barrel like after they added butterfly joints
Works for certain people and doesn’t for others, I prefer the original HBK and HHH but new Bret and Brock. I have no problem with the joints themselves but how they affect the look of the figure. If I look at it and it looks good I buy it simple
Drop down hips gotta go tho

They definitely sacrifice aesthetic for functionality and that's generally not my bag. It's a unique situation where it appeases a minority of the base, but that minority makes up a huge percentage of the online presence/grass roots marketing of the product via social media. So from a business perspective I think it's smart to lean into the figure photography world. From a personal perspective I think they make some of the ugliest torsos around, and I usually can't put a shirt on those Ultimates fast enough. I don't think it matters. They're not going to roll it back now. This. I love the extra heads and extra accessories the UE figures come with - but the torso/butterfly joints thing actually puts me off buying some of them... that Eddie and Rey are shocking and went from must-buys to probable misses (the original figures from 10+ years ago look better). I don't think the UE figures of guys like Batista, 1st Hardy, and Goldberg look good either (to name a few). If Eddie didn't have the shirt to put on I'd outright pass on that one.

One arm up mostly? Side on facing hogan? It’s not needed so the shoulder area looks ugly as, even more so side on and for zero benefit.

Some of the backs can look a little gnarly with the cutout portions breaking up the musculature (UE13 Hogan) and tattoos, but overall, I like having the extra playability.
I know I’ve been staring at my collection too long when I start wondering “Maybe Elites would look better without the ☹️ articulation in the chest”

I love the butterfly joints but feel they really need to fix the torso crunch. It's almost useless for going forward.

I'd buy the version without butterfly joints because I hate Mattel's answer to them. They're far too loose and they look hideous in all honesty.
Only exception would be if any specific character needed those joints to to their signature post (AJ Styles needing to put his arms close together to match his gloves together).
If that character regularly wears a t-shirt, and it comes with a t-shirt, I'd consider the butterfly joints solely because the shirt covers those things.

This is dumbo. The 6 of you should stick to elites. Fair enough. I have a couple of the older Ultimates but after I got the latest Brock the butterfly joints and the drop down hips turned me off of them so much that I immediately sold him and will just be sticking to Elites from now on. More for the rest of you, I reckon.

I prefer elites, but am indifferent about the butterfly joints on Ultimates. I like the extra accessories. And I like the removable arms. I hate the toe joints, though. Those get loose too easily.

If anything, the toe articulation can go. But doesn't bother me much. It doesn't do anything for playability imo.

The six people who don’t like butterfly joints should learn about this thing called the elite line ...they don't come with the all the extra heads and accessories though. And that's the thing - I don't think people are against the Ultimate Edition line in general, as it's fantastic. When it works. At the moment though, the butterfly joints (and/or torsos) really take away from the overall look and "premium" feel of some of the figures - these new Eddie and Rey UEs look worse than their Basic figures... 😬

Here's the thing.
When I was younger, my first experience with wrestling figures, were the BCA figures. They were awesome to play with. Their arms and legs were flexible enough to perform a decent amount of moves.
Before those, I remember playing with my uncle's Hasbro ring and figures. He didn't have many Hasbro wrestlers, but he had tons of GI Joe's. So I played with his Hasbro ring and his GI Joe's. Best ever IMHO. To this day, I feel like a line similar to GI Joe scale would be great to have. Maybe a colab with Hasbro? Steve?
Yes jakks did make a line in that scale, but if you even played 5 minutes with them, your figure is essentially a helicopter with the limbs ridiculously loose.
Anyways, after the BCA line, obviously started getting the RA figures. In terms of improvement in face technology they were awesome to look at. That ends there in terms of looks. But they IMHO were terrible to play with. Trying to do a power bomb, or pedigree it severely limited the playability trying to do certain moves. I couldn't imagine playing with ljns and the like, but that was that era of time.
They improved the articulation with the deluxe line. But see comment about playing with the figures for 5 minutes.
Mattel, in terms of scale, look, and playability have probably the best aesthetic all in one.
I wanted butterfly joints since playing with bcas. Because they had rubber arms, it was easy to to maneuver your hand to squeeze the arms in word and it just worked.
They finally added what I been clamoring for.
There are a couple of ugly ultimates, but I want to attribute that to a poor torso choice rather than the joints themselves.

They suck because the people designing the figures are blind

The end of butterfly joints would likely be the end of me buying UEs. Butterfly joints have been one of my biggest wants for years and years.
Articulation over everything. I like being able to display my figures showing some personality, not just museum poses.
