I personally don’t like Butterfly joints as I prefer realism over additional pose ability and I know I’m not alone. I much preferred the way series 6 Rock was vs the new one we are getting but thankfully for me, we get the soft goods to cover the joints up.
I understand the butterfly joints serve a purpose for some collectors and figure photographers and I think for certain talent it does produce some really cool photography and poses. However, I think it would be ideal if as collectors we were given a choice whether we want them or not.
My opinion is people just like the idea of added value and actually very rarely use the extra articulation. If Mattel offered both versions, maybe they could offer figures without butterfly joints at a cheaper price point.
To be clear, I’m not advocating butterfly joints should go away, I think ideally we should get a choice. Given the choice 90% of the time I’d buy without the joints as the figures aesthetically look better but I would perhaps buy the odd talent if I felt the extra articulation added value to give me an iconic pose that I couldn’t do without.
Really interested to know if given the choice, where or how people would choose to spend their money.

I don’t like the way they look. But mostly Id display with entrance gear on and they make for better poseablity

Can we stop having these threads??? Every time someone makes these suggestions and they come to fruition people aren't happy.... Mattel isn't going to spend money on having two versions of the same figure when they could just charge the current price and people would buy it regardless. If you don't want the butterfly joints, just buy elites. They almost have the same amount articulation as the Ultimates and fit the aesthetic you want.

Been trying to tell him the same thing but he can’t let it go for some reason.

If we got the heads and accessories, then sure…but we don’t. So not buying isn’t an option is it. Some elites come with extra heads. I'm not sure what the exact price of elites are, they're 23ish? and Ultimates 32ish? If you want all the accessories and heads, just buy the Ultimates then. Prices are going up for things, they're not just going to make an in between line to fit all the aesthetics of both for value. If anything, Mattel should give us more options like removable torsos to swap out like the AEW line. I like articulation because my figures are posed and I use them to take pictures from time to time. Granted there are some parts that do look out of place, but that is out of my control and the only thing we could do is give Mattel feedback on how to improve the look. Thus far, Ultimates look way better than how they did initially. Anyone remember mushroom torso Warrior and HHH?

Keep the butterfly joints. I’ll buy all Ultimates but picking and choosing what style each Ultimate has would be dumb, and people would complain regardless.

The butterfly joints are fine. But the drop down hips need to go.

They just need to create more torsos. Butterfly joints aren’t the issue imo

They definitely sacrifice aesthetic for functionality and that's generally not my bag. It's a unique situation where it appeases a minority of the base, but that minority makes up a huge percentage of the online presence/grass roots marketing of the product via social media. So from a business perspective I think it's smart to lean into the figure photography world. From a personal perspective I think they make some of the ugliest torsos around, and I usually can't put a shirt on those Ultimates fast enough.
I don't think it matters. They're not going to roll it back now.

I love the extra heads and extra accessories the UE figures come with - but the torso/butterfly joints thing actually puts me off buying some of them... that Eddie and Rey are shocking and went from must-buys to probable misses (the original figures from 10+ years ago look better). I don't think the UE figures of guys like Batista, 1st Hardy, and Goldberg look good either (to name a few).

I hate them. I'd buy UEs if they didn't have them.
