So, its possible Mattel might have some kind of agreement with Inoki's estate since that's clearly him depicted even though his face is obscured, right?

It's a cool concept, and I love the execution of the packaging and etc. Most likely not something I'll try for, though I'm slightly tempted as a I have read a ton on Ali over the tears. Their tooling of that Ultimate ref body opens up a lot of possibilities for other names going forward. We say that, but we had an elite ref torso for a few years and nothing since Danny Davis. Not sure I would care to have an "ultimate" ref, when even a basic ref would suffice in most cases. That torso isn’t just for referees. It works for anyone with a dress shirt with any tie. So UE DiBiase is now possible or UE Vince.

That's true, but my comment was directed specifically towards referees. Edit to add. Do we really need ultimate suited figures when the torso will be covered anyway? When ultimates were first launched, I assumed we get straight wrestling gear for them. And it's been like that ever since. I'd rather cloth goods suit over wrestling gear personally.

I like how so many comments are lukewarm..... "I really like it! Looks great! But not for ME....." Really curious how well this sells..... I'm in agreement with others, it just seems out-of-place in my wrestling collection. There are other things I could add to my collection with that $70 that would make more sense for me. TBH, I think it will sell out as quickly as the other SDCC exclusives, and I will probably end up in the same value range, possibly slightly higher but not exorbitantly so. That said, regarding the "not for me" posts (and I posted one myself, so I'm not being negative about the people who posted them) I think there's a bit of wrestling bubble happening here. To the community on this site, the majority appeal of this item is ref Ali with the boxing gear being the ancillary item. However in reality - especially in the way SDCC Exclusives are designed to generate press and interest outside the specific interest bubble - the boxing Ali in the Ultimate figure scale is the main draw here. That's what will lead to articles on places like ComicBook.com and etc. and drive interest in it.

I don’t see a need for em. Heck, I’m happy with basic suited figs. I guess those who want a Vince, DiBiase, Gene, etc on a Coliseum Collection card then I guess there is a need for em.

To me, an ultimate suited figures is pointless when you won't even see the torso. The only thing you'll see is the double jointed elbows, and jointed toes. Elites have the elbows now, and the feet I couldnt care less about. (Never cared for toe articulation). Not sure I wanna spend 30 on that. However, I would spend 45 on a wrestling gear with cloth goods. I would absolutely HATE to have MDM first ultimate to be locked into a molded suit IMHO.

Limited availability exclusives for popular toylines always sell out fast, has very little to do with character selection. An UE Wildcat Willie would sell out fast if it was an SDCC exclusive (and despite being a huge WCW fan, even I wouldn't want him). Keywords are limited availability and popular toyline - scalpers are primarily the ones behind these apparent "instant sellouts".
These Ali's look like a nice figures, but I will never agree with wasting spots like this on celebrities when there are literally hundreds of deserving classic WRESTLERS without figures. Would have loved an obscure gimmick or character here, i.e. someone who wouldn't sell in the regular Legends line. That said, I'll forgive the Ali if they actually reuse the Referee body for a real classic referee sometime, e.g. Nick Patrick, Randy Anderson, Earl Hebner, etc...

For better or worse, we've seen that those types of figures don't achieve the goals of a con exclusive the way cross-promotional products that generate buzz beyond the wrestling base does.

alright this may be the first SDCC I pick up. Are these made to order or are they just while supplies last?

Inoki/Ali 2 pack would have been awesome.

There's a slight chance I could allow myself to get swept up in the hype at 11:59 on Friday, but I really have no interest in this. It does have that '80s wrestling connection, but meh.

I want Inoki but Elite. I don't want an UE version.

A lot of people are sitting this one out so hopefully it’ll be easier for me to score one.
