I love how people are saying this set is a "disaster" and how poorly it has sold... without actually knowing how many sets were made, lol. And no doubt if the set had sold out immediately, people would be complaining too π€·ββοΈ.

Did Mattel give you any problems with not allowing cancellations on preorders? No. I just sent them an email If they put a discount on it to move more units, I'll be cancelling my order as well.

I think each side of the argument is right; Mattel likely made more units of this set so as to not sell out quickly (a la the last 3 SDCCs), but also the demand for Ali wasn't as high. Even Chuckles on the 'bro side took awhile to sell out.

How delusional people are here... If something fails then they try to shadow the failure of mattel by saying the thing was produced in higher number π

Itβs a lousy set, and Iβm glad I passed on it. Low effort this time around when compared to SDCC exclusives from the past. Completely disagree - I think it's a fantastic set... the boxing gear Ali (with robe and the snarling head) in particular is superb. And the packaging is phenomenal. Probably the best (or my favourite) SDCC exclusive to date.

Two of the same guy in a set is a tough sell, especially when one is Marty Mcfly Ali. Again, heβs an all time great fighter and sports figure. No doubt.

Nah, easier just to say it's a "failure" I guess. Honestly, some people are never satisfied - they complain when things sell-out... then complain when things don't sell-out. You couldn't make it up π€¦ββοΈ.

Seriously, the Ali set is objectively an amazing marvel for wrestling fans and just people who collect action figures in general. like, just a figure nerd, I find this set amazing. Even if I knew nothing about wrestling, Iβd love this set cause itβs Muhammad Ali, one of the most famous people ever and itβs loaded with cool hands and heads.

I think if they were going to do this era for SDCC, they should have did Coliseum Collection packaging with ref Ali and Orndorff (if he is still available) or Bob Orton if he wasn't available. That way you pulled in the people that were only excited for Ali, the people that were only excited for Orndorff/CC packaging, and the people excited for both. They could of released boxer Ali in the Legends line.

Itβs 2023 and Mattel doesnβt care about collectors that enjoy the value of rare figs. Itβs just a lame fig this year that nobody wanted or asked for.

It's not about production... It's failure of their idea. Don't try to defend them.

I think it is entirely possible they produced a higher quantity of Ali than previously to try and meet demand. Hogan/Zeus, Slim Jim Savage, Mr T and Slaughter all sold out very quickly
I think itβs also entirely possible that mattel greatly overestimated the demand of a 2 pack of the same guy, a non wrestler, who was active before most of us were even born would have on wrestling fans.
If this had been Inoki/Ali, or Hogan/Ali. Maybe it would have performed better.

Maybe they made far more of Ali, as he is a new/big name... ie. why go to the trouble of signing a new name, make TWO brand new Ultimates of him (with new tooling) - then make it in similar low quantities and leave money on the table? We just don't know.

If something fails then they try to shadow the failure of mattel by saying the thing was produced in higher number π so you think Mattel couldn't have been listening to complaints from previous comic con exclusives and actually wanted everyone to get a fair chance at getting one, no it must be because no ones interested in someone that transcends the wrestling world and one of the most well known people of all time

What exactly constitutes a failure? Has it performed poorer than the more recent ones? Sure, but is something not selling out in a week really a failure? We donβt know their production numbers or how many have sold thus far. For all we know theyβre already in the black with this fig and whatβs currently unsold is inconsequential to their bottom line.

Just because the others sold out in one day at 3-4K, doesn't mean they'd have sold out at 10K.
