Used to be Edge, until the scene got killed by scene kids who couldn't tell you who Minor Threat are. Kids who claim they're so edge and then get ed up on the weekends. Didn't want to be associated with that. I still follow most of the "rules" though. I don't smoke, no intention of having herbal cigarettes, don't like taking medication, don't just hop into bed with anyone. I'll have a drink now and again, but I don't drink to get drunk. That's pointless. I was going to mention this, but thought it'd take the conversation into a direction it didn't need to go. This is a BIG part of straight edge that a lot of people don't get. I'm almost 24 years old. I've had sex with two girls in my life. Not because I "couldn't", but because I wouldn't. Self control. The two girls I've been with, I was in a 6 year relationship with and a 4 year relationship (that is still continuing).

I don't drink. I don't smoke. I don't do drugs. But I'm not going to call myself straight edge because there is a whole culture and music scene that I am not into.

I've said it before here, unless you're part of a punk/hardcore scene (which are notorious for drug and alcohol use and abuse), calling yourself straight edge is stupid. It was born (and NEVER intended to become a "lifestyle/movement" by those who 'created' it) in a music scene that was nothing but drugs and booze, Minor Threat's song had a purpose and a real meaning behind it, because of where they were.
Calling yourself straight edge without that, isn't anything substantial. There is no substance to it at ALL (har har har, substance). You're just another personal that lives clean, that's about it.
And gawddamnit WFigs, learn what hardlining is, and the differences between it and basic straight edge.
...that said, beer good.

I come from a family of alcoholics and realized, when I was younger how to stupid the stuff is. Smoking is disgusting in my option and there's no point. I never saw the need to put harmful substances in my body. I've been this way before I even knew who CM PUNK was. As for the music, I also am a fan, but I think that is more that its because I realize they have the same state of mind as me.

I only have sex with my girlfriend and i dont take medication, only antibodies for my infected tooth since i cant afford to have it removed yet. I listen to some of the music but its not totally my scene but i respect it.

I wasn't gonna bring that part up, but I do believe in this part too, I believe you shouldn't just 'bang' someone because you can. Oh, and I love that people are bringing up Minor Threat, didn't think many would know much about them, but yea awesome band. Ian is simply one of the most influencial people not only in punk, but also music in general. And I kinda guess I should say, I have never desired to smoke or drink, I've seen what drinking/smoking does personally, and from about 14/15 I decided I wouldn't drink/smoke. It wasn't till I really got into the music and bands such as Rise Against and Minor Threat mainly that I really learned about it, and it was clear that I was already living the Straight-Edge lifestyle without trying/conforming. I guess I started taking it more serious when I started going to really small shows, and it was actually after a Cancer Bats show that I decided to start 'x-ing' up. Since then I have done it for all the punk shows I go to, and I aim to continue it. But seeing there does seem to be a fair few people tha are into the sxe thing (music-wise) hell, why not post some of your favourite straight-edge songs/bands? The one I posted is a cover from The Swarm, and of course Minor Threat's "Straight-Edge".

I use to use the term all the time. But then I met kids in the scene that was making the lifestyle more of a cult thing if that makes sense. I still follow the rules of straight edge just don't use the term all that much because it seems everyone should know. If someone offers me a cigarette i just say i dont smoke, same with a drink. I haven't just slept with anybody like other friends who claim edge. It's like they're changing the rules. They continue with saying that that part doesn't really exist in this time.
I still go to shows all the time. Just went to an H20 show last weekend in a 250 capacity room. One of my favorite bands is the Gorilla Biscuits. So i know what the term means and where and why it started.

I for one am not straight edge. I don't do drugs or smoke but I do drink alcohol. Here in the UK "straight edge" isn't really a common thing to hear....In my local area most people will divulge in at least 1 of the 3.

I hate hearing about 12 year olds who claim to be straight edge, they really have no choice to be it or not.
Meh, I like some of the music, I don't smoke, don't do weed, don't do drugs etc etc. But I have drank, and I do enjoy it.
In the UK it's easy to get alcohol at the age of 15/16, and since my parents don't mind me having it, I don't crave it, and don't do things to get it. I have never been drunk, and don't drink in excess. I have a bottle of cider and I am done.

What really grinds my gears is when people claim they're straight edge because they're clean. There is a difference. Clean = being clean, no desire to do anything, while allowing one self to possibly partake in drinking/smoking, etc Straight edge= Being clean, but taking on the responsibility of never doing any of it. I don't drink. I don't smoke. I don't do drugs to get high. I Do take prescription medication, because i need to, like ADD medication and anti-depressants, but I don't abuse them. I don't have promiscuous sex. I've only had sex with 2 girls in my life, both whom I was in a relationship with. I don't claim to be straight edge to be cool, I'm straight edge because it's whats best for me. I also have never touched any of the "poisons" I have been clean for all my life and decided I will be for the rest of my life.

I have conflicted feelings about straight edge, I think it can be a a great thing for a lot of people. I also find that it can turn you into a pretty negative, disrespectful and self-righteous person.
I respect the hell out of people who choose to live a substance free lifestyle. Hell, for many years, I did myself. I didn't even try alcohol until I was in college. I still very, very rarely drink. Maybe three or four times a year, tops. I don't like the taste of alcohol, and I've never been a partier. It's just not my thing. I've never smoked anything in my life, nor do I intend to.
I've never claimed to be straight edge, though, and the reason for that is because I don't identify myself with the culture and scene that most straight edge people do.
I've got a few straight edge friends, and know a whole lot as acquaintances through my friends. The town I live in for school has a huge local music scene that is absolutely flooded by straight edge kids that eat, breathe, and sleep the values and the scene. I find most of them to be rude, obnoxious, and completely self-serving and condescending. I can't stand going to shows in the area because if you're not part of their clique, you're a complete outsider and "don't deserve to be there." It's that false sense of entitlement that has always bothered me.
I know I'm not speaking for the entire straight edge culture, it's just what I've witnessed.
The music has never spoken to me, either. I listen to plenty of bands that have straight edge members (two of my favorites, for example - New Found Glory and The Wonder Years), but they're not preachy about it.
Hardcore music doesn't speak to me, at all. In fact, I can't really stand it (again, even though a lot of my favorite bands have roots there). The only hardcore band I listen to is Every Time I Die, if you even want to classify them as hardcore.

Alright i just have one thing to say on the matter. The whole you cant have ever done drugs or drink and be straightedge is bs, i used to have a real drug and alcohol problem and then my fiance told me she really didnt like who i was becoming. I gave up everything and have been living clean. I always listened to punk and hardcore and finally decided to move to the straight edge part of the culture. I have my straightedge x tattooed on my arm and if someone told me im wrong then f em. Too many people i know died from drugs and alcohol

I'm 25 and have never touched drugs or alcohol. Nor do I engage in promiscuous sex. I don't run around calling myself straight edge, but I have said it before. I'm not obsessed with any one type of music. I like whatever sounds good. Not trying to offend anyone, but I don't see a problem with that.

I also have never touched any of the "poisons" I have been clean for all my life and decided I will be for the rest of my life. Pretty much exactly the way I am too. I have been legally able to drink for 6 years now (and considering a lot of people start drinking around the age of 12/13 in this country, that could bump it up to 12 years) but I've never been tempted and I never will. I've been in social situations where I could've had a drink/smoke but chose not to. Last week I had foot surgery and was prescribed medication for pain management which consisted of up to 16 tablets a day for 2 weeks. But I only took 2 tablets in 2 days then stopped. Even in the past I've shunned them to just manage it on my own. I'm not into the music side of the hardcore straight edge at all as it's unappealing to me. So while I do lead the lifestyle, I wouldn't really label myself sxe due to the lacking music preferences.

Ive been straight edge before punk became mainstream for it. I just decided i didnt want to be like the rest. Basically thats it in a nutshell for me, of course i like the music that is produced. It hasnt really changed me as a person but its broadened my horizons in a way. I dont really know many other people around me that are edge. Sounds quite like myself.
