24 going on 25: I've never had a single drink, smoke or used any recreational drugs in my entire life. I'm not into the punk subculture roots of it, nor do I like tattoos, but when it comes to the core values, I have them down. Meanings and definitions change over time. In my book, straight edge has grown as a term for people who make the lifelong commitment to this. I don't like saying 'clean' or 'sober 'because that implies you used to have a problem. I never did, and I take that seriously, because I've had various relationships crumble over this commitment. All my remaining friends drink. But they don't make it a problem, so I don't make it a problem. It's that simple. This basically describes me except that I do like tattoos. But, what I bolded is exactly how I feel about the subject.

alright i am confused about the lifestyle of a Straight Edger. Since i find alcohol and drugs to be stupid and I am also a virgin(until i meet the right girl), Does it mean i am considered Straight Edge? I have also heard of the bands but never new they are for those who follow Straight Edge lifestyles. If pain killers and other medicine are considered bad, can you take them as by the amount prescribed, without gaining an addiction? I don't take medicine that helps with headaches and colds because i believe that when i workout it seems to heal and go away(which it usually does). Also, if your not suppose to take drugs, when seriously injured and thus being hospitalized, do those drugs break your lifestyle? These are just questions that float around my head. Since i am against drugs and alcohol but don't like the music, what am i? Oh yeah its wierd that we need to label a lifestyle. its just something i did, having no idea there was a term for people who also do it, makes me a follower!BULL I consider that straight edge personally and so would ian mckay who coined the term so there you go.

I'm a big fan of straight edge. Got a few friends who are straight edge, and are very reliable DD's. I knew a bunch of straight edge kids in high school, must didnt make it through 1 year of college.

I have no plans to drink or smoke, but I don't need to be apart of a silly group.

Yes, I'm straight edge. I don't consider myself among some bigger group, but I adhere to the "no drugs, drinking or promiscuous sex", so as far as I'm concerned, that's straight edge and I'm it. For the most part, I always was straight edge, I just never had a name for it until Punk came around.
I say for the most part because of two examples. One, back when I was about ten or so, someone in my family gave me a very small amount of alcohol as a way to show me the taste is bad so I'd never start drinking. And also, I've drank caffeine most of my life because well, I didn't know it was a drug. Once I found out I stopped consuming it, which was relatively easy, although I still kind of miss Mountain Dew.

I don't understand how some of you guys are first hearing of 'Straight Edge' through CM Punk...? i assume it's an age thing. Just sounds weird to me.

Dude, I am 30 and when I was in high school (1995-1999), lots of my friends were Straight Edge. I hope none of you think this "movement" is anything new.. it wasn't even new then.... and you don't have to be down with that music to be Straight Edge. That's just the people who popularized it. Don't be trendy. Also - for the record, most of those Straight Edge kids I hung out with ended up being alcoholics or drug addicts. ...and the people who created it. Look, I don't want to seem like an ass, but at least "straight edge" makes sense in the hardcore punk scene, it has a purpose and a meaning there. People have to understand that in that music scene is a TON of drug and alcohol abuse, which is why the song "Straight Edge" was even written. Now, has the whole thing taken on a life of it's own? Is it bigger than the song ever was? Of course it is, but you can't write it off that easily. ...and off topic, but I swear, I see more people on the WWE board here snicker about CM Punk being "straight edge" and being a hypocrite about drinking Pepsi, cuz da Pepsi haz caffeine 'n it 'n caffeine iz teh drugz. Like they somehow figured some amazing **** out that no one else has before. Hell, I don't even know how to segway into it, but if you're one of those people, please watch the end of this interview with the person who WROTE the song in the first place... Hardlining includes not using caffeine.

I'm still waiting for the O/P to describe a "proper" punk/hardcore show.

I'm still waiting for the O/P to describe a "proper" punk/hardcore show. I mean a real punk band show. Not like punk-pop or whatever, and taking place in a small venue. No barriers/security, just chaos really.

I Just recently made the vow to be straight edge and at a young age to (15) I mainly did so I could keep my body in good shape for the future. It's a big decision especially at my age where that stuff is everywhere and of course I'm being mocked for it but it bothers me in know way. I'm proud of my choice.

Quite frankly, you can bite me if you think I have to listen to hardcore music, or study the history of the phrase, to consider myself straight edge. I know what I don't do, have never done, and will never do, and will consider myself straight edge whether a bunch of forum purists want to judge me or not. Face it, times change, terms get adopted and become part of society's norm, and you can't change that. Got a problem with that? Deal with it.

No barriers/security, just chaos really. Chaos? I've seen bands in the punk genre ranging from Oi!, to crust, to street, to pogo, and I've never really seen "chaos" at a punk show. The closest thing to "chaos" I've seen was back in 2004 at an Unseen/Lost City Angels show when I saw a skinhead get the hell beaten out of him because he kept punching people in the circle pit. The Subhumans, one of the most well known underground anarcho-punk bands ever, had a barrier set up at The Launchpad in Albuquerque, New Mexico when I saw them play... and aside from house shows, every venue/club I've ever been to has had security.

Never before him, never since him, and never again.

Right, well by chaos I meant chaos in the modern day. Of course there is security at the side of the stage and of course now alot of venues have a policy that barriers need to be up for safety. Maybe I should have went on about more how I meant in the case of low stages, stage-diving, interactivity with the band before/after. How the bands are more outreaching, and more fan-orientated and less driven just to finish the show.

I'm taking the comments by 15 year old "straight edge" kids with a pinch of salt. It's easy to say all these things when you're young.
