Is calling it "edge" and not "straight-edge" like the hip thing to do or something? I have never heard anybody refer to it as just "edge" until I entered this thread.
Maybe I am just out of touch...? lol.

I never call myself straight edge, but I am. Have been for 6 years this June.
Have "6.1.6" tattooed on my arm, that was the date. I would never try and be a part of some straight edge culture and symbolize it with the three X's or anything, because I don't do it to be a part of something, I do it for me.

Also, I'm going to sound like a total hypocrite, but a buddy of mine said "If you're under 21, you're not straight edge, you're simply obeying the law" I agree with this. I have a handful of friends claim to be edge..then ended up breaking it..and completely stopped talking to me..like I'm the almighty decider of good and evil. Yes, I am disappointed they weren't committed to something that I'm very passionate about and would prefer they don't label themselves if they even doubt they'd break it. I say this to many young kids who claim to be straight edge: "Don't be straight edge until you're done with highschool to commit to it" Go ahead, be clean, that's great..but people change, in the end just be you..
Apparently, for some people, being straight edge is as easy as not murdering people, for others, it's a struggle, I personally don't see the struggle, but I DO see it.
Moral of the story, just be clean, until at least 18.

Wait... I just got prescribed some tablets from the doctor for this terrible cough I've had. Would that mean that I'm not "Straight edge"?

I don't drink, smoke, or do drugs because they're stupid. Not because I need to label myself straight edge.

Are you trying to say Punk Shows are not crazy.....alright, that's a load of bs I'd be willing to wager that there are maybe 3 to 4 users here who could rival the sheer number of punk and hardcore shows I've been to, both mainstream and underground, over the course of the past twelve years or so. I've been to a handful, seeing DRI and Cro Mags on the 24th, and saw suicidal, sick of it all, ect. and they have crazy shows. Are you saying it's all peaceful or something?

And what if you torrent movies and such but didnt do all that other stuff, you are still straight edge but are not a law abiding citizen.

Were you out sick the day they were handing out comprehension skills? Where have I once said anything about shows being hand holding, happy go lucky affairs?

Wait... I just got prescribed some tablets from the doctor for this terrible cough I've had. Would that mean that I'm not "Straight edge"? Straight Edge isn't a set rule system. Some people won't take anything at all, no caffeine, vegans etc etc. Some people just don't smoke, drink, do drugs. Straight Edge is about what YOU believe is okay to put into your body. If you had a bad cough, take 'em. Better to do that than to risk dying.

Would neeeeeever go straight edge, takes out a lot of fun from life tbh. If thats your thing then fine, but its not for me. Also, I hate the music.
I also guarentee that, out of those who claim to be straight edge but are still pretty young, most of them will start drinking. They probably haven't had a chance to yet. Theres a reason most people in society drink at some point: its fun.

I've been straight edge for 4 years, I hate to drink, smoking is ing stupid (I have a lot of family members who smoke), I don't do any kind of illegal drugs and don't care to because I am not stupid and I don't have sex with random girls, I've been in a relationship with my girlfriend for 3 going on 4 years. I am straight edge because I want to not because of CM Punk (I am a fan of his) but I choose to be straight edge because it's a personal lifestyle I want to follow.

I am pretty sure most people who proclaim themselves 'straight edge' are not actually old enough to drink/smoke.
Myself, I could never do it. Alcohol is awesome.

I'm sorry, but straight-edge is a lifelong thing. You can't become straight edge after doing drugs previously. That would just be being clean, and that is great too!

My "bestfriend" ask me why if I am still straight edge and I told him yes, he drinks and gets hammered on a semi bases when he is out in a bar or club. I don't think he gets me like he did back when we were 13, he is 27 going on 28 and I am 28. My girlfriend loves the the fact that I don't drink, smoke and do illegal drugs and that I am clean and sober, she is too straight edge.

I respect people that get emotional or spiritual strength from being straight edge, but I hate how preachy most of them that I know seem to be. It's almost as bad as the Catholics that I know.
