Those that think Jakks always had great scans are looking back with revisionist history. Sure they had some great scans, but they had more than their fair share of clunkers too.

Jakks were aiming more for the action figure feel and seriously me being a big ELITE collector over BASICS (which I still like) who cares about ab crunches really?? who sits there and plays with their figs 24/7?? petty IMO.. Oh and if Mattel is so good how come theres no photos in the database??? There is only one way to settle this between the 2 companies... A TRADITIONAL SURVIVOR SERIES TLC ELIMINATION HELL IN A CELL STAFF MATCH! jakks team vs mattel team, no holds barred, no dq, NO MERCY!!! In bobby Heenan voice: "Yea, but whose side is Padawer on?"

Overall it seems the Mattel quality is a ton better. I'll admit to enjoy Jakks scans a little more, but the head is only a small part of the figure itself. Not on a jakks figure, it's not! #bigassbobbleheads

On roster size, because I like more lower down guys that help make the card, and on some of the head scans too. IMO

What face scans are you guys who think Jakks did better looking at? Their Divas scans are absolutely atrocious. Has anyone looked at the Jakks Sid lately? To say that the Jakks Classic figures are better is just downright silly. Even now, with fewer legends, the Mattel Legends clearly blows Jakks out of the water. Jakks had nice ideas, but they knew they had a captive audience and did next to nothing to improve their product. One of the Jakks Jerichos ( not a Jakks collector can't specify) we had when I worked at KB looked like some kind of horror movie monster. Maybe 1/10 head scans looked anything like the guy they were supposed to be.

Mattel does it better than jakks. Jakks makes almost all the wrestlers look the same size and can never be accurate of certain wrestlers back in the old days, only time jakks did so good was the bone crunching series. After that, the figures just got awefull and just wasn't the same anymore.

Jakks RA Run was 2003-2010 so 7 years, and I'm only using that as a comparison because the BCA & TTL era's are nostalgic and appeal to a certain group of collectors anyway.
We are halfway through Mattel's 6th year. So at this point it's fair to really compare both.
The only thing Jakks has over Mattel is still the Classic Line. While Flashbacks/Legends have been amazing....they still haven't hit ALL the area's Jakks covered. As in characters. There are still a large amount of wrestlers who made it into Classic Superstars that haven't even been teased or talked about for a Mattel Flashback. May not be important to some people....but for the sake of an argument you have to give the edge to Jakks on character selection in the Classic line, because they really went above and beyond all expectations to try and give the COLLECTORS the most complete line possible.
Obviously the reasons for that are legit. Contracts, also lack of a fully separate line. So it's not something to really knock Mattel on, however it's unfortunate that the way their business is set up that we only get a select number of "Legends" per calendar year. Because the first go-around of Legends was mismanaged and poor selling. However Jakks was never able to secure guys like Steamboat, Macho Man, Sting (technically in TNA but I'm talking strictly WWE here), which has a lot to do with timing, but still Mattel has been able to give us some really great stuff we never got with Jakks.
Lets look at overall quantity.....
In the RA era, Jakks released 44 RA sets, 40 "Ring Rage" sets, 39 "Adrenaline" sets (2 packs), and 21 Pay Per View Sets Also 31 Wrestlemania sets, 5 ECW sets, 10 Treacherous Trios, 27 Deluxe Aggression sets, 8 Deluxe multi-packs...etc.
Add 28 sets of Classic Superstars, 13 sets of Classic 2 Packs, 11 sets of Classic 3 Packs and finally 8 sets of Deluxe Classic This isn't including all the exclusives. Add all that up and it's approx 285 sets of figures during the whole run. which averages out to about 41 sets per year across the line
Mattel is up to 63 basic sets, 41 battle packs aka 2 packs, 43 elite sets, 11 "pay per view" sets, and handfuls of other sets like hall of fame (4), legends (7 + 1 2 pack), Wrestlemania (4-5) best of PPV (20 or so), superstar entrances, best of's...there's been a lot of random sets thrown in since 2010. So lets just say for the argument we've gotten 230 sets from Mattel...that's an average of about 38 sets per year. So basically Mattel is right on pace with Jakks as far as set releases.
Figure style....
People constantly crapped on Jakks for "balloon arms and giant heads"....but the same could be said about Mattel with their figures being too small. Why does Finlay's figures look like he's a cruiserweight? Why were Elite Yokozuna's arms sooooo skinny? And people are still complaining about part selection...so I really don't give an edge to either company here. They are vastly different but both with flaws.
Details....
Mattel wins in a landslide. How many Jakks figures were ruined by lack of details? I can't even begin to count. Half their RVD figures had singlets that were detailed only on the front. How about Classic 5 Brutus Beefcake? Jakks' cost cutting/corner cutting with paint detail was laughable. Mattel really hasn't had any of those issues at least THAT egregious. Mattel utterly destroys Jakks in detail.
Headscans.....
Both companies have had some stinkers. But At this point with the amount of different heads we've seen, Mattel has more than adequately provided some amazing looking heads on these figures. And never really had any sizing issues. Mattel has far surpassed Jakks with the heads. Now they just need to get some guys new ones that have been using the same for a long time.
Price..... When Jakks RA first started they were about $7.99 for a single, $14.99 for a 2 pack, $12.99 for Classics, $11.99 deluxe. Towards the end the prices rose to $9.99/$18.99/$14.99. And the only real difference with Mattel is the Elite line going up approx $5.00 since it's initial debut to retail close or at $20. There's no real edge here, because pricing has to do with our economy and almost nothing is the same price as it was in say, 2006. But at least Mattel with the basics & 2 packs has managed to stay around the same price since launch ($9.99/$19.99)
Mattel has proven they care about the WWE line more than ever, the constant feedback and Q&A opportunities we get is refreshing. The guy working on the line clearly is a fan of the industry, he's not just a guy making a paycheck. Switching over from Jakks to Mattel at first was a process....I never thought 6 years later i'd be looking at shelves full of Mattel and week by week my Jakks collection dwindling down to almost nothing.
In the end, Mattel has done a much better job than Jakks. And it comes down to detail. The Elite Line has been the best thing to ever happen to wrestling figures...even though we've seen most cloth accessories go the way of alien-rubberplastic, still the overall appeal and variety with the inclusion of Flashbacks that destroy their Jakks Classic counterparts, it's clear the winner in wrestling figures is Mattel. There really isn't a debate anymore.

I was a huge fan of the BCA figures from Jakks when I was a kid. When they switched to TTL I quit getting them they sucked to me. In about 2006 or so I wanted to buy some guys I was a fan of (Orton, Punk, Shelton, Carlito and a few more) but once I seen them in person I couldn't do it they looked ridiculous. Then 4 years later I seen mattel got the license..so I figured I'd check them out when I seen them in store. Went to a kmart and found all of elite 1 and was blown away by the scale and detail and different body types. Rey was shorter than Punk who was shorter than Edge WHO was shorter than Taker! I grabbed the Punk and I have been hooked since then.
So a huge YES to this question from me.

My brother and I had quite a few Jakks bone crunchers when they were first coming out. I never cared for the aggression figures though. They were hard as a brick and really rigid. I used to tell my brother that I wished they would make high quality wrestling figures so I could buy them. I kept my word when I saw the Mattel elites.

This right here. Jakks was awesome at getting us so many. I really think if the Mattel Legends line didn't come on the heels of this one, it would have fared much better. I can't be the only collector who started collecting this line late, in part due to the fact that "starting over" takes a little time and motivation.

Even if Jakks did one thing or another better, they ed up so much and Mattel is just better in almost every way... So for that I don't even bother retrospecting.

I think the big difference between JAKKS and Mattel was JAKKS made toys and Mattel makes collectibles. JAKKS figures seemed more designed to be played with whereas Mattel figures seem to be more for display.

You can't compare them in my opinion due to different time periods and different technology. A lot of the wrestlers we all want Mattel to make were more relevant when Jakks was making them and fast forward 5/10 years and whoever is making them will no doubt appear to better than what is on offer today. Its just how enhancements in technology works.
I myself much prefer the Mattel figures. But I will give Jakks credit for keeping the same CS packaging the whole way through and giving all the Divas massive cleavage haha.

I think so. Both have their pros and cons. You have to keep in mind with jakks that RA figures were created 14 (!) Years ago. At the time, most action figures were not that detailed. At the time jakks figures were very good and it was a great line. Plenty of diverse releases, affordable, great packaging and pretty good looking. Obviously 14 years later they don't hold up to what we're getting now. One thing I hated about jakks though was how content they were. They had some horrible mishaps on their figures. Wrong part choices, no detail on the back of figures, crappy accessories. But their headscans were excellent. They really captured the likeness well. I much prefer them over Mattel cartoony heads. BUt compared to Mattel it's not close. Figure quality has improved tenfold in the 14 years that RA debuted. However Mattel is starting to go the jakks route in regards to laziness. Jakks figures almost never increased in price. With Mattel they've gone up while quality has gone down. I have no problem with price increases as long as the quality stays the same. It's unethical to charge more for less. Now instead of shiny belts and cloth accessories were getting dull belts, painted or plastic shirts, figures with no accessories, defining moments with a rubber jacket etc. It's a bad omen for the future
