19. Chris Jericho as the Face of the WWF 2001-02
I always felt that Jericho should've been a babyface heading towards the Undisputed Championship and WMX8. Looking back he was so over when he came in as Y2J and his hilarious one liners about Stephanie were legendary. Jericho was one of the best in the business at the time. Sure Jericho can be a great heel, but I don't believe I was ready to see that yet. When Jericho had turned heel it felt cheapened for his character. We all know that the main event of WMX8 was booked for Triple H to go over as a babyface, but even though people were happy to see Triple H back from his injury, he was always a natural heel. Even when he won the Undisputed Championship, he was a tweener heading to his match with the Hulkster at Backlash, so all that work was for what? What if Chris Jericho doesn't turn heel at the Survivor Series 2001? Just how could be become the face of the Company when there is a roster of top stars? I'm a Jericho-holic since his WCW run. I don't think it would have been better or worse if his Undisputed Championship Title run was as a Face, but it would definitely be different. I think by Jericho being a Heel, enhanced the appearance of defeating 2 of the Greatest Of All Time, not only on the same night to win the Straps, but successfully defending the Big Eagle and Big Gold Belts against both of them. Maybe he could have been a Face during his run. Maybe he could have turned Heel during the WrestleMania X8 main event. It sure would have been interesting to see Y2J as the Undisputed Face of the WWF.

Question: Will Austin still be a heel come Mania X8? Haven't gotten there yet, we'll see what comes of Austin.

I don't mean to downplay him as a heel he's good at it, but just felt different about it back then, after WMX8 he was pushed down the card and even had to job to Hogan on RAW. Sure he would later win the IC title for what the sixth time I think it was, but felt like this was the guy who should've ushered in the next gen after the Rocks and Stone Colds of the Attitude Era. Also big fan of Jericho, loving his heel run in AEW right now even though Mox deserved the title I felt bad that Jericho lost it. It's all in fun anyway which is what this anthologies series is about.

Monday Night RAW November 19th, 2001 Hosts: Jim Ross and Jerry LawlerThe Invasion is over and Vince comes out to the ring to cheers and fires Mick Foley and Paul Heyman. Vince wants to meet with Austin and his kids later tonight. Vince says the WCW World Championship will be renamed to the World Championship and that he has buried the Alliance. Vince: Last night I defeated the Alliance, I did it all on my own (gets heat). Dammit I'm Vince McMahon, without me you would be watching Lance Storm and Steven Richards in the main event tonight. Without Vince McMahon none of you would be here, without me winning last night, without my efforts....(Y2J's music hits) Y2J: (on stage) Vince hold on just a minute, while you're right that if the WWF had lost last night, we would have the most boring main event match ever that all of us would be falling asleep, asking for their refunds out here tonight and everyone at home would be switching channels right now, ha, but Vince, last night in what was my greatest match in the history of my career, where I made Stone Cold Steve Austin tap out right in the middle of the ring and saved your company in the process, you get all the credit? Vince: That's right dammit I'm the one who put the team in the first place... Y2J: Vince you were supposed to be in the match in the first place but you chickened out (was actually injured) last night and instead had the Big "Slow" take your place, how did that go? Let's be honest Vince you want to take the credit, but you forget who saved your a$$ last night... Vince: That was definitely not you, I saved the WWF, I did it me... Y2J: Will You Please Shut The Hell Up? Vince: No because see Jericho, while I'm going to be dealing with Stone Cold and my son Shane and Daughter Stephanie... Y2J: (coughs) Whore (coughs) Vince: Dammit Jericho you're going to be taking on Kane and Kurt Angle in a Triple Threat match tonight because there is nothing more I want to see than you losing that World Championship. Later Backstage Vince confronts Shane and Steph, Steph blames Shane for the Alliance and Vince has Steph dragged away from security as she cries. Backstage Stone Cold is nowhere to be found as Vince is looking for him but knows that his truck is around. Vince is out and calls for Stone Cold to come out. Austin doesn't show up and Vince announces that he is going to fire Austin till Ric Flair comes out to Vince's surprise and reveals that the stock back in June that Stephanie and Shane sold to buy WCW and ECW was in fact sold to Ric Flair, and that Flair actually had 50% voting power this whole time. Flair waited to see if the WWF could truimph before revealing himself and has now decided to take his place in the WWF as a co-owner. Vince is in shock. Backstage Vince is hyperventilating, but tries to calm himself down as he enters his office only to find Stone Cold Steve Austin sitting on a sofa with the WWF title and looking depressed. Vince tells Austin that he needs his help. Austin says that he thought he was fired. Vince says that he wasn't really going to fire Austin. Vince instead wants to reward Austin and says he's proud of Austin for being someone who actually had the guts to try to take down Vince McMahon while Ted Turner and the whole Gov't of the United States couldn't but Austin almost did. Austin looks confused. Vince says he needs Ric Flair gone and needs Austin on his side and promises something he would want if he does. Chris Jericho (c) vs. Kane & Kurt Angle for the World Championship As the three are in the ring, Ric Flair is on stage and announces that it will only be Jericho and Kane for the Championship, but that Kurt will have his chance next week. Chris Jericho (c) vs. Kane for the World Championship Kurt is furious and Flair says he'll fire Kurt if he doesn't listen. Kurt and Flair leave. Jericho hits the lionsault on Kane for the pin and win at 3:53. Winner: Chris Jericho via pinfall
Suddenly Austin comes down the ramp with the WWF title. He throws it aside and gets in the ring. He's in Jericho's face. Austin has his hand out. Jericho looks confused and they shake. Vince is out on stage and shouts at Austin. Austin looks at Vince, then looks at Jericho, then looks at Vince and kicks Jericho for the Stunner! Vince has a grin as JR goes nuts about Austin being a rattlesnake and DTA as RAW goes off air.

Thank god for Jericho's justice. On paper it was such easy reign you could of booked. You still could of made Jericho strong going into WM 18. But, they totally messed it up. Should be fun seeing your spin.

WWF Smackdown! November 22nd, 2001 Hosts: Michael Cole and Jerry LawlerFlair opens Smackdown and talks about the WWF Championship and the World Championship. Flair doesn't believe it's a good idea to unify the belts but needs to be convinced, McMahon struts his way out. Vince: Dammit Flair, we can't have two Champions in the WWF, not anymore not when I buried the Alliance, so why not we settle this right now, at Vengeance we unify the Championships into one WWF Undisputed Championship. Whatd'ya say Flair? Flair: Fine, let's do it then, but I don't want it to be just a one-on-one match, I want Chris Jericho, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Kurt Angle, and the Rock to be in a Fatal-4-Way! Vince: Well...I kinda like the idea too perhaps this partnership of ours could work and my nightmares could be over. Later backstage Vince finds Big Show. Vince: I wanted to see you, I don't like the idea of Chris Jericho getting a shot at the unified Undisputed Championship, therefore, tonight on Smackdown, you're going to take that World Championship belt away from him. Show: I don't know Vince I mean why all this hate for him, he got us the win, WWF survived... Vince: Dammit he called you Big Slow on RAW! Show: Is that so (gets angry). Later in the show Vince has a meeting with Austin who is found in Vince's office. Vince wonders how Austin keeps appearing in his office all of a sudden. Austin says he wants to make penance for what he did to Vince McMahon. Vince says he doesn't have too, but Austin says he's going to prove he's loyal by making penance in the middle of the ring and Ric Flair has already agreed to it. Dudley Boyz, Test, and Christian def. Stone Cold Steve Austin (c) via countout in a non-title handcap match. All four opponents were on top of the ropes and landed on Austin who was on top of a chair as Christian gets the pin fall on Steve who made this match happen as penance. Austin gets out of the ring hurt. Chris Jericho (c) def. The Big Show via pinfall with the lionsault after a botched chokeslam attempt by Show who falls to retain the World Championship

Tonight Vince orders Kurt and Austin to get into a tag match against the Rock and Jericho. Backstage Austin says he has to continue to make penance for betraying Vince McMahon before his tag match tonight. Vince tells him not to do it and that the past is the past, but Austin says he has to do it and has three matches tonight as he's putting the title on the line. Vince tells him that's insane and he could lose the title. Austin says he has too. Stone Cold Steve Austin (c) def. Christian via pinfall to retain the WWF Championship
Stone Cold Steve Austin (c) def. D-Von Dudley via pinfall to retain the WWF Championship Stone Cold Steve Austin (c) fought Edge to a No Contest after Ric Flair comes out and tells Austin that he's cancelling the match because this has gone too far and Austin has to be ready for a tag-match tonight. Later backstage, Austin starts drinking several beers in Vince's office as Vince rewards him with them. Vince says he needs Austin to eventually do something very important because although Flair has been somewhat tolerable thus far, he has to become full owner of the WWF. Chris Jericho (c) & The Rock vs. Stone Cold (c) & Kurt Angle in a Tag matchAngle and Austin work together, but don't get a long very well. Jericho and the Rock do well together, but as the match continues the Rock accidentally bumps into Jericho. They get into a fight. Austin and Angle jump them both till they bump into each other and Austin flips off Angle they get into a fight. It's an all out brawl as all four guys go at it. Flair comes out and stops the match and says that that they just can't get along and because of their fighting the Fatal-4-Way match to determine who is the Undisputed Champion, is that it will be a Last Man Standing Fatal-4-Way.

Monday Night RAW December 3rd, 2001 Hosts: Jim Ross and Jerry LawlerRECAP: Smackdown had Austin once again do "penance" for Vince McMahon by having a WWF Official whip his back with the WWF Championship belt but Flair came out and stopped him from doing it. Flair gets in the ring and admonishes Austin that he doesn't have to be on Austin's side but Austin stuns him anyway and leaves. Jericho was in a match with Edge & Christian taking on the Big Show and the Dudleyz as the match ended with Jericho making Edge submit. Vince opens the show talking about how Austin has done enough penance because the ultimate show of loyalty was not only going too far with the belt, but was stunning a co-owner of the WWF. Vince says he's proud of Austin and has his money on Austin winning the Undisputed Championship this Sunday. And to prepare him, he's given him the day off. Out comes Jericho. Y2J: A day off? Huh Vince, why is that so? Vince: Dammit you again, can't you see I'm talking here. Y2J: I don't get what your problem with me is Vince, everyone out here and the millions and millions of Jericholics around the world know that I saved the WWF and I hold the World Championship... Vince: Hold on just a minute there Y2J, what you can't see it for yourself? Look at yourself in the mirror why don't you dammit you look like a hobo, that's right that's what you are, you're a nobody, you're nothing you're a fluke in the WWF and to prove it to you tonight I'm going to take that title away from you dammit that's right tonight you're up against the Undertaker. Y2J: You want to know who I am? Look at the signs everywhere because RAW...is...Jericho and I'll be ready for the Undertaker tonight. Later backstage Austin is getting heavily drunk in Vince's office and Stephanie is with him. Vince gets in the office and is outraged that Stephanie is in the building at all and wants to know who let her in. Austin said he did because she's the bosses daughter. Vince is about to call security and Austin says he wants Vince to hear her out. Vince says he doesn't want Stephanie around and instead Austin should just leave because he's got the day off. Austin says he had a talk with Steph and she wants forgiveness. Vince says to just leave and take Steph with him. Austin agrees. Chris Jericho (c) fought the Undertaker to a No Contest at 10:32 as the Undertaker was about to go for a chokeslam but on screen footage is being shown of a hotel room where Jericho starts wondering what in the world is going on. He watches as Taker watches and they see a drunk naked Austin in bed with Stephanie under the sheets! Jericho starts to Hurl in the middle of the ring! The bell rings and the match is called off. Taker even tries to help Jericho to get a bucket. Austin is up and notices that Steph is beside him. Austin: O no....no....Vince is going to be mad....(Austin leaves) Jericho starts to laugh, but hurls once more in a bucket. Vince is watching in the back in disbelief to what is going on with his daughter and Ric Flair is with him having a blast as RAW goes off air.

WWF Smackdown! December 6th Hosts: Michael Cole and Jerry LawlerSmackdown opens with Vince McMahon who gets in the ring looking upset and not even strutting. Vince: (takes a deep breath) On Monday I saw my daughter, who by the way is a married woman dammit embarrass me, Vince McMahon, in front of the whole world when she was found in bed with Stone Cold Steve Austin, the WWF Champion. Come on out Steph, I've got something to say to you....(Steph makes her way out in tears) Now I understand the temptation of a woman who wants to be with the WWF Champion, a WWF Champion who is a role model for all, (King shouts what!) but dammit Stephanie your husband is in the hospital recovering from an injury and this is what you do? Stephanie: Please dad, I...I...I...(in tears) Vince: You wanted redemption huh? You wanted forgiveness from me? Well you can have it if you do what's right and divorce your husband Triple H. Stephanie: Done...it's done... Vince: Good, now come here (hugs her, Y2J's music hits) Y2J: (on stage) You know I thought about what happened and...wait let me....(burps)...phew that was close... Everyone knows that Stephanie is a (cough) whore (cough), but finding out you were cheaper than a 2-cent prostitute sleeping with the WWF Champion, well that kinda made my day and I was right all long as always, but Vince McMahon, Vince making your daughter divorce a man who is in recovery from his surgery from a career-threatening injury, Vince, you make me sick. Vince: Dammit Y2J.... Y2J: I ain't finished yet, come on Vince, Stone Cold Steve Austin, the man you hated for years, the man who betrayed you by joining the Alliance, the man I made tap out in the middle of the ring to save the WWF, slept with your daughter...don't you see anything wrong with that? Vince: I will deal with Stone Cold...as for you Jericho, you're going to be facing Big Show in a ladder match tonight. Backstage Austin is in Vince's office as soon as Vince enters. Vince startled and Austin starts begging Vince for forgiveness. Stephanie comes into the room not knowing Austin was there and they both turn away from each other as Stephanie runs out. Vince says he will forgive Stone Cold if only if he wins the Undisputed Championship. Austin says he will do it. Later Backstage Stephanie finds the Big Show and asks him to destroy Chris Jericho tonight as she's had enough of him insulting her. The Rock fought Kurt Angle to a No Contest after a run in by Stone Cold who stuns both of them ahead of Vengeance as he is determined to become the Undisputed Champion. Chris Jericho (c) def. The Big Show via ladder to retain the World Championship at 9:22. Despite the height difference, Jericho dropped Big Show to the outside and was fast enough to get on the ladder to grab the World title. Show is angry and gets back in, Jericho fights back but Austin runs in and stuns Jericho beating him down in a corner. Suddenly the Rock and Kurt Angle all run in to go after Austin and it's a four-way fight till Smackdown goes off air

Monday Night RAW December 24th, 2001 Hosts: Jim Ross & Jerry Lawler RECAP: Jericho isn't on Smackdown and the excuse is that he is injured from the Big Show's attack on RAW. We learn that Stephanie manages to get an annulment completed instead of a divorce with Triple H thanks to Vince McMahon's rich lawyers who were able to convince a judge that it was a "forced" marriage with footage from the chapel scene when Triple H married Steph when she was asleep. Stephanie is happy during the show but starts to feel weird and hurled in Vince's office which pissed him off. Throughout the show The Big Show is hiding from Chris Jericho who finally arrives. Backstage on RAW Stephanie is in Vince's office as she starts panicking going in and out of Vince's private bathroom. On Vince's desk there are several pregnancy sticks all used. She looks at one and freaks out. Vince comes to his office as she tries to throw all the sticks away. Vince wonders what that is, and Stephanie plays it off as women stuff playing off of Vince's ignorance and Vince decides to leave the office. Big Show plays a game of cat and mouse trying to hide from Jericho, but Jericho finally finds him in a closet and starts smashing him with a broom as Big Show runs off. Backstage Vince has set up a Christmas eve party room with his stooges and one of the stooges asks Vince about pregnancy tests found his his trashbin in his office. Vince asks what the heck they're talking about and they're congratulating Vince on becoming a father again. Vince tells them off and realizes it's Stephanie's.... Big Show is in the ladies washroom and enters a stall and notices some Divas come in. He gets afraid, but then gets excited when two of the Diva's for some reason enter a stall together talking about "doing the nasty". Show tries to get a peak in a stall near him, till his stall opens and it's Jericho! Jericho smashes his head with a trashbin as Divas scream. Jericho throws Show out of the washroom but Show manages to escape. Backstage Stephanie is ashamed as she enters the Christmas party and she notices Austin having a few beers at the party. She tries to run off and Vince stands infront of her and oddly hugs her saying "there there, there there". Steph looks frightened wondering if Vince knows. At the end of RAW, Jericho smashes a chair unto the Big Show as he falls and breaks "a wall down" of the christmas party ruining it as Vince is furious and he grabs Steph taking her away. Jericho is on the assault landing rights and lefts as Show lays motionless and WWF officials finally stop him.

Monday Night RAW January 7th, 2002 Hosts: Jim Ross & Jerry Lawler RECAP: Smackdown December 27th Vince tells Stephanie he knows she's pregnant, but he wants to know who the father is. Stephanie says she was only with one man more recently. Vince has a grin and thinks about all the "little Austins" running around flipping off people and he loves it. Austin doesn't know yet. RAW December 31st was a best of 2001 episode. Smackdown January 3rd we learn Jericho will be taking on the Big Show at the Royal Rumble and Y2J defeated Edge in singles. Vince and Flair open RAW arguing about the state of the WWF. Vince decides that since the WWF is too big for two big egos, that they settle it at the Royal Rumble, the winner gets full 100% ownership of the WWF. Stone Cold Steve Austin confronts Stephanie in Vince's office. Although uncomfortable he asks if she's pregnant. She looks away and nods. Austin asks if it's his and Steph nods. Austin looks stunned and leaves the office. Steph looks to Austin as she is about to say something and is surprised he's gone. Backstage Jericho is confronted by Flair and Flair says that he doesn't trust Vince and wonders if Jericho would have his back at the Royal Rumble. Jericho says he'll think about it but he would love to have a spot in the Rumble since Vince would never give it to him, and Flair agrees. Later in the show Rikishi wears a Big Show shirt and Jericho finds him. Rikishi likes the Big Show and is a fan of his. Jericho tells him to take it off. Rikishi smashes Jericho unto a wall and says "he did it for the Big Show". Jericho fights back and they take it to the ring! Chris Jericho def. Rikishi (with a Big Show shirt) via pinfall at 3:22 with the lionsault.
As RAW is about to close out comes Triple H to a massive pop from the crowd and JR going nuts about how he's back. Triple H: First of all Stephanie, Chris Jericho was right about you you are a HO. But what is worse is you got pregnant while you were married to me. Annulment, separation, divorce, call what you want Stephanie, that's a worse crime than you can imagine and the Game is back to play. So tonight I'm issuing a challenge to the father of that unborn abomination, Stone Cold Steve Austin to a match at the Royal Rumble for the Undisputed Championship. Austin, you're a dead man....and at the Royal Rumble I will have my vengeance.

Triple H is out in the ring and talks about how he has avoided Stone Cold Steve Austin and his ex-wife Stephanie because he wouldn't be able to control himself and will confront the both of them this Sunday when he wins the Undisputed WWF Championship. Stephanie comes out on stage anyway and talks about how she loved him, but Triple H couldn't please her because he was handicapped not only with his injury but also his "tiny wee wee" wouldn't work anymore. Stephanie comes into the ring and JR doesn't think a pregnant woman has any business being in the ring. As Steph distracts Hunter and talking trash about their "sham" of a marriage, out comes the Big Show who attacks Hunter from behind. Steph demands that Show injure Triple H but Jericho runs out for the save knocking out Show to the outside for RAW to go off air.
