He has a mind for the business but only in regards to the era he comes from. One where wrestling was taken much more seriously, but left most workers broke, broken, or dead. Regardless of how you feel about it, pro wrestling has evolved and it’s all but left Jim behind. If you were selling TVs today, would you care about the opinion on how to sell them from someone that sold them in the 80s?

It’s funny you say that, I watch Cornette regularly and I DO find him entertaining. But I’ll always turn to my brother while we’re watching him and I’ll say, the joke with all this is, if Cornette put his vision of wrestling on tv he’d draw like 13 fans haha. He makes valid points at times, but his vision of wrestling isn’t much better in 2021

Well I don’t listen to any podcasts or read any dirt sheets so so I don’t know what they are. But I will say this at the end of the day even if they are the same as mine I don’t care what they are. The only criticism and opinions I care about are mine. Just like the only ones you should care about are yours. And you can hear others opinion and maybe take something from that, otherwise why are we all on a forum? haha right? But yea, obviously you feel the way you do for a reason but at the same time, I don’t mind hearing somebody else’s opinion and sometimes I’ll relate or learn something. Well yes if we are talking and you tell me your opinions I will listen to them, but at the end of the day it’s not going to change mine which is the one that’s most important to me when it comes to my likes/dislikes on entertainment/hobbies. But something like a podcast or a dirt sheet I don’t bother with them. Unless it’s like Austin’s interview sessions with other wrestlers. But something where they are just giving their opinions or ratings I just don’t care to hear their opinions. Even with figure reviews i turn off the volume because I just want to see the figures an make my own judgement on to whether or not I want it.

I mean, put it this way, I listen to Jim Cornette pretty regularly. He HATES the Ultimate Warrior, he hates AEW and pretty much 90% of the stuff I like haha. I still watch him but no I don’t agree with a damn thing he says haha. He’s entertaining though

Cornette’s criticism doesn’t matter. It only matters to his existing fan base. He’s essentially out of the business and just gives his opinion. I listen to some clips from time to time. Sometimes, he makes valid points that would probably be better received if they weren’t lost in the flood of other stuff.

He’s had the same gimmick for decades now, he’s just an internet heel these days because he cries about AEW as well as WWE. The “Kevin Dunn Bad” hivemind opinion that’s still rife in 2021 comes directly from early 2000s Jim Cornette shoot interviews. He’s hated all wrestling since about 1989, except for whichever promotion is paying him at the time. He can be fun to listen to, but for every valid criticism he makes, he’ll follow it up with some nonsense that’s just an old man wanting everything like it was when he was growing up. It’s fairly human nature - look at all the times on here that people ask for the titles, brand splits, PPV schedules, PPV names, factions etc to go back to the ones from when they were kids. Cornette just frames it in an entertaining rant. If you’re a fan of a modern wrestling show and you get butthurt easily, avoid his podcasts. Kevin Dunn is bad. That I agree with Cornette about! Anyway, Cornette’s podcast is too long and about half of it is the AEW review and how he blasts everything. Mostly everything. Omega can do no right to him because of the silly match with the little girl. Even if tomorrow Kenny decided to wrestle like Bobby Eaton, Cornette would still hate him.

Cornette is more relevant today then hes ever been. Any time anything happens in the wrestling business, go to twitter and youll see tons of "cant wait for cornette to talk about this"....the fact that so many AEW wrestlers lose their crap and get in war of words with him alone shows how relevant he is. Irrelevant people do not garner the attention he does, good or bad. the people who hate him will run to twitter and say hes "irrelevant" failing to realize theyre talking about him to do so. Its amusing. People loved when hed go on rants about Dunn and Russo....now that its about wrestlers they like its a problem. Cornette is the most entertaining human in wrestling and has been for a long time. he makes a ton of money from sitting in his house and speaking his mind. dude is living the life. relevant to pro wrestling pop culture, irrelevant to the matters of modern wrestling and it’s fans. Completely disagree. Modern wrestling fans are who speak about him most.

I’m questioning the validity of some old hypocrite’s trivial takes on a business that passed him by 30 years ago, and so are the other modern fans.

I'm late to the party, and I didn't read any of the above posts, but I'll say that I think his opinion matters, and his mind is being wasted.
If he could loosen up a little bit on his mindset of honoring what wrestling used to be, he'd improve AEW overnight. There would be tight basics, great working punches, and more-logical storytelling. He would be "The Cleaner," IMO, because AEW is great, but it lacks polish. There are improvements to be made, and he could definitely help. It's probably why TK contacted him before anything even happened.
I also think his presence points out other flaws in AEW, specifically, the fact that in almost any other industry, Miro, Kip Sabian, and Penelope Ford would have been fired for their conduct, regardless of why they were upset. I don't wish that, or anything (although she is terrible, in-ring), but if you're going to trumpet issues of social justice and charity, at least be consistent in application. That said, IDGAF, because I don't feel entitled to a company behaving as I would.

I really want to tune into most things week after week but I have a hard time as most of Jim's criticism's while harsh at times for some folks are pretty warranted. If there was some world where he would get along with everyone (though I don't blame him for not) it would be better for wrestling overall.

I think wrestling was at its best when everybody from all sides was contributing. It had a little bit of input from this perspective, a little from that perspective, and it was just enough of the other ingredients to be a perfect recipe.

I do think that when he kinda shines, it’s when he’s looking at something specific and is essentially like “Well why are we doing this?” or he points out a way something could be simplified. I think he loses a lot of people because of his “presentation”. He often comes off like a bitter old lunatic. If there was a way to bring him in to just kinda give some constructive criticism, he’d be valuable. Unfortunately, he does seem to hold grudges and it comes off like if he doesn’t like a person, he automatically won’t like anything they’re involved in.

Where Cornette really loses me is when it comes to his hatred of AEW. I totally understand hating the wrestling business in general today, but AEW is AT LEAST trying and in my opinion, doing a much better job at wrestling then WWE is. He’s almost made it a gimmick to just hate on AEW, and at this point, I think if you’ve been watching wrestling since the 90s, we all jaded at this point. I honestly believed wrestling couldn’t be done well anymore…having said that, AEW surprised me. It’s very well done. He just knocks it now for the sake of knocking it. It almost makes too much sense for him to go to AEW as a heel and actually implement a little but of change. Where Cornettes frustration comes from I think is that he burned a bridge with AEW I guess? I know Tony Khan use to talk with Cornette, so I’m not sure what happened there. It seems like a no brainer though for Cornette to get involved in AEW and make some change though. Add your input just like he did in WWF back in the day. I’m CERTAIN they’d listen.

AEW really bridges a gap between old school and new school. Sure WWE has had some legends nights on RAW but normally when they have a legend in a segment most times it's to do a silly gimmick segment while AEW is using their legends with the term and role of "legend" in mind with respect. AEW SHOULD be a company Jim absolutely loves but again, he's not being paid by them and he probably gets paid well through views or ads by talking trash about them. Also, I know some of the AEW matches can be a bit brutal but even "back in the day" there were matches that probably were considered brutal for the time but I bet Jim loves like the Bunkhouse Stampede, Scaffold Matches and Concession Stand Brawls.
I don't watch much wrestling but I do see a bit of AEW and WWE on the gym TV and though it's close caption I can still see the action. Most WWE wrestler move like mimes in slow motion literally showcasing no talent while AEW wrestlers are in full action mode and showing that they belong on a big stage. And most AEW wrestlers look and act like actual major promotion wrestlers while most WWE wrestlers I see look like someone that knew a promoter of an indy show and put on some gear. YES, WWE IS the best there is based on their history but if they rest on their laurels too much another company can and will once again compete with them and challenge them for #1. Not saying it's AEW but WWE really needs to be mindful.

Therefore, he goes the extra mile to find stuff to hate about AEW For sure, you made a great point. He DOES have something to contribute, we’re getting more of Cornette the tv show heel though on his podcasts rather than Cornette the person. When he’s constructively critical, he’s a great mind…but that’s like 2% of his show. 98% is him in character and at this point, I really don’t know if he’s playing an angle and one day they’ll bring him in as a massive heel. Because it makes no sense to me. He was friendly with Tony at a time, why the drastic 180? I just think this is Cornette playing a modern day heel, whether in collaboration with AEW or not, he’s playing his character on social media rather than on tv. Once he got all that attention for hating Russo, I feel like the gears started turning and he realized he can do a gimmick on YouTube just like he can on tv.

I think your point is actually a good example of my point. I feel like Cornette hates AEW mainly because he has a grudge with Omega. Therefore, he goes the extra mile to find stuff to hate about AEW I see what you're saying because of the rants he goes on but none of the stuff I've heard him criticize so far comes from 'pure hatred'. The lack of selling, the lack of polish, the lack of coherence in storyline decision making (in both companies, really) are all extremely warranted criticisms that keep someone like me who has at one time been one of wrestlings biggest advocates from even coming close to watching on a regular basis. I don't think the responses of "well, wrestling is changing" and "everyone already knows its a work, lets have fun" are good excuses for this, either. I think there's room for guys like Orange Cassidy but it isn't in the main event. Otherwise, why not do your absolute best to make this look more like a real fight as much as humanly possible and less like an aerobics competition? For me it's the same across both companies. I see that dude Reginald dodging with flips and jumps and its just like who does this benefit except 5 year olds who don't know any better and someone who is obsessed with Cirque du Soleil? Most of the rest of folks (casuals, possible new fans, old school fans, etc.) see that and couldn't care less. So while Jim's ranting is either 'love it or hate it' for most folks (though I can't think of a moment I've really disagreed about even the people he gets mad over) his overall criticisms about protecting the business and actually making it look good, enjoyable and competitive sports-based is for sure in fairness. The reason I think he gets so angry (like many of us that used to really love this) is because these are basic, common sense level considerations that are just mostly overlooked. We have gems here and there but I can't in good conscience call any of this 'overall great' at the moment, even if I'm really trying to enjoy it and it comes down largely to the types of things Jim says.
