How do we all feel about this? I'm a moc collector so this changes everything. Box packaging is going to have to be beautiful for me to carry on collecting to justify buying a product you can't see. Hot Toys have managed it pretty well so it can be done, but I feel Mattel are going to have to up their game on the current blue elite packaging. It's really cheap looking and without a product on show, I'm not buying. Here's a look at the very first closed box Marvel Legends shown today. Hasbro seem to be leaps ahead in the toy industry compared to Mattel. At first I thought those were packaging mockups because the actual product wasn't ready yet. I only collect a few things (Bret Hart, Ghostbusters, Super7 TMNT) so I'll just switch to loose collecting. Except Super7. I would just quit that one. I display mine MIB with the cardboard sleeve removed.

Hasbro and Mattel better put more, time, and effort into customer service with that direction the toy industry is going.

Oh Nah! I need the window. I don't want to buy an Elite and to open the box and receive a basic.
My vote: 👎👎

I really hope this is one change Mattel never follows. Many reasons why I don't support this style of packaging.

I have to be able to see the paint job and if all the accessories are included or I won't buy!

I don't hate this. There's a happy medium to be found, for sure, but I can see a future where most toys are in plastic-free packaging, and only special 'retro-carded' collectors stuff has the modern plastic windows. I buy most of my toys online, so I'm already leaving a lot of things up to chance as it is.
I do like having MOC items on my shelves though. I'd miss that.

For this to work there has to be some highly tamper proof packaging and way better qc

Is this move away from plastic packaging mainly because of how long it takes to decompose when thrown away? If so, why is more not being done to recycle this plastic? Here in the UK we've come a long way in terms of recycling as it's very easy for all households to recycle now and it's become second nature. I recycle without even thinking about it.
Alternatively why not just have a small window of a softer material which decomposes easier, like cellophane? It allows us to check QC issues and while it is a softer barrier for thieves, when have stronger boxes ever stopped that scum?
I recycle all boxes anyway but I need to be be able to see if the figure has issues. This is just a big blow for MOC collectors unless you like nice boxes.

You should really look into the percentages of plastic that actually get recycled, because a lot of it in the recycling stream ends up sitting in landfills. And even beyond that, plastic has a way of leeching into water sources when breaking down, which means it ultimately ends up in our water and food. Plastic reduction in sources like packaging is a huge help, because the issue with plastic isn't just that there's too much of it, it's that the plastic exists to begin with. That being said, I would be happy with the Fortnite small window at this point, although I'm fine with the packaging going even further in reducing plastic.
Recycling is also based on demand. It's a materials industry - the recycling we send out for processing has to get sold to someone. And the plastic we put into recycling far outweighs the demand corporations have for recycled plastic.

I don’t like that idea at all. That’s why I passed on that Spider-Man that’s on preorder. I’m collecting an action figure not a box. I want to be able to see the figure thru the package window of I’m collecting MOC. Im also picky on how it’s positioned in the box. Then you have the QC issues that you won’t be able to choose one over another when buying. Terrible idea for MOC and Loose collectors.

How about Flex Force style packaging, which was mostly cardboard, with the accessories packaged in the bottom (like SDCC Slaughter), so people can't just walk by and take them.

Packaging really isn’t a big deal for me since I’m primarily a loose collector. Luckily, I haven’t had many issues with figures I’ve bought QC wise….until the two most recent Ulimates (Batista and Triple H). Not being able to see what you are really buying will definitely cause some problems weather it’s QC or swaps. Curious how retailers are going to handle returns.

You will have a situation where something like the head which is easily swappable now gets stolen a la Space Jam Lebron James figure somebody mentioned earlier I'm sure they could come up with something to prevent that from happening.

Box ends up in the trash anyway. This is the problem that makes me ok with going plasticless. How many people are just throwing away packaging instead of recycling it? How many people are even ABLE to recycle if they are willing? I’m in California and my municipality recycles well, so I take the time to strip all the plastic from the cardboard and recycle it. I don’t think that’s happening across the board though. In which case, we need to make a change.

I'm a loose collector too, but when I buy a figure in store I would like to see what I'm buying, how it looks, and if the thing I'm buying is even in the packaging. Having no way in showing what is the contents in the packaging would leave me always having concern when I am purchasing it instore especially if it something that can easily be tampered with. Also MOC/ MIB collectors aren't being considered with this change which is awful.
