Don’t see why Mattel needs 5k backers to make things. You would think rather it’s 3k or 5k it should still end up the same when it comes to profit. They dangle the carrot over your head with this stuff knowing they could make this and give it to the people who actually backed it, you can’t tell me not selling 1k of these is making them lose money. If for whatever reason they think it is, then why not mattel back the final 1k and just sell them on mattel creations? This is why I’m done backing anything else, they could make this work. Hell, they could keep the figures and I’d buy the stage alone for $400 4K x 400 = 1.6m. Surely this could work with Mattel profiting as is. Let’s just say the markup is a mere 25%. $100 x 4K = 400k. I have a hard time believing it would cost over 100k to create this thing along with whatever marketing, advertising, etc it cost them. Maybe the profit wasn’t enough or worth it? it’s obviously more complex than the above …. But I can’t believe 4k backers doesn’t do them well. And like you said above, sell the remaining 1k on the open market after. Absolute ZERO doubt they’d sell, especially without the 1 year wait time.
The answer you're looking for is "budget".
The WWE team within Mattel only gets so much to work with. These crowdfunders are more than likely out-of-budget. Meaning, they have to pitch the idea to a boss. A Mattel boss. A guy who has nothing to do with WWE. They'll throw out the 1.6m number and he'll ask what will it costs us and how much will Mattel make. In the end, Steve said it HAD to have met 5k to make it work. And by "make it work" he means ... my boss at Mattel agreed to this project as long as we met a goal.
This has nothing to do with how much money Mattel has in their piggy bank.

I don’t see why there was a deadline to begin with, I know it helps with getting ppl to back it sooner, but maybe they should have added an extra week just to get what they could then back the rest themselves. You can’t tell me mattel is that money hungry they need that money right then, put it on mattel creations and they would definitely sell within a year when people realize it’s limited to 1k.

An honest question -- what do you think could have changed in 1 week? Even if they did more advertising, I think it was pretty clear that only around 4,000 people wanted this, unless they changed international shipping

Hell, they could keep the figures and I’d buy the stage alone for $400 Google Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) and that should help explain why it needed 5K backers and not 3K. On top of that, the more you produce, the more you can spread your direct/indirect costs out. The point of crowdfunding isn't for the company to buy the remaining variance and sell them at a later date and hope for them to actually sell. Sure, Mattel could have gotten creative and funded the remaining 1100 units or so. Maybe do a chase color attire or chase packaging and then tried selling Rey and Steiner for $150-200 each (maybe even numbered them out of 1100) and the stage for $250 or something a year later. Something like that is still a big risk and needs approval from higher ups. It's funny that people don't want to be told how to spend their money yet it's so easy for us to tell companies what they should do with their money (even if it doesn't make business sense for the company) just because we want something.

The big problem here is, I’d say more people would want the attitude era RAW stage but that would now be so expensive, even that may not get funded. This nitro stage would have opened up the tooling for RAW, Smackdown etc. gutted it didn’t get there. Well, if the Nitro Stage would have helped with the cost of Raw Entrance and Smackdown fist then the reverse should also be true, maybe they should do those two stages as the next two crowdfunding campaigns. If Raw and Smackdown are as popular with the masses as people say, they should easily get made. And if those get made, that should help bring down the cost of the Nitro Stage, and maybe they could try it again in a few years. At a lower price, fewer figures (maybe just Steiner and Warrior), and maybe throw in the nitro ring mats to go with the WCW ring that's still coming out.

Ultimately we have a small but dedicated set of wrestling collectors compared to other fandoms.
Yes other fandoms have had failures but we are almost 2 for 2. People say about how the new gen rallied towards the end of macho but that was added after the initial offering as extra. Star Wars, haslabs etc didn’t have to add extra to the initial offering to try and persuade people
Wrestling has a stigma attached to it, even now, the whole “it’s fake you know” STILL goes on to this day! It’s seen as “for kids” which turns some people off. Makes people not want huge status pieces etc.
Star Wars has 46 years so let’s say 3 generations of collectors. It’s not seen as something to ‘grow out of’ as wrestling is. Yeah there were dark days in the 90s but it’s as big as it’s ever been for all ages.
Comics etc have never been in the public consciousness like now. Even the golden age doesn’t compare to the mega mega multi million blockbusters that again generations go to see. You literally have 3 generations going to see the films.
That means when a huge sail barge is released you have s much bigger base of potential purchasers, you don’t have the same stigma attached to it, so much more goes into favour for other fandoms.
An example, the sail barge could easily be displayed on a bookcase holding DVDs in a living room. You don’t need a collectors room, people won’t “take the Mickey” etc etc

Possibly but we’ve been told the RAW one would be more expensive than the Nitro set, so it made sense to do it this way around. I hope they do put the RAW stage up next year but I don’t think they will now.

Exactly. And actually, that number was probably closer to 3000 people - as there were at least 3 "250 jumps" where (we presume) stores bought them in quantity to sell on. At the end of the day, I think these types of items (stages and the like) only appeal to a small section of collectors... they're just too big and/or expensive for most people.

We honestly don’t deserve another crowdfund if 5k Americans could get this funded. I hope we don’t get another and that the Raw and SmackDown fist never happen. The community is negative and cheap. Incredible how half the community rooted for this to fail in a hobby they claim to love. All that economic talk is coverup for people’s laziness financially.

Ok, why not back it for the people who wanted it? Then just resell it Why should I (or anyone) feel obligated to front $400 and engage in the legwork to flip something I don't want just to satisfy someone else's needs? Why make something smaller just for u? U can custom that.

Haslabs constantly have crowdfunders that fail and they put out new ones. Just because this one failed, doesn’t mean the next ones will Hasbro pretty much owns everything they put out I believe. Mattel has to abide by a license when it comes to wwe. Almost everything, they don’t own Marvel.

It deserved to fail. So the WWE license chooses a WCW product to prove the concept for an all-or-nothing extremely expensive crowdfunded project? So dumb.

The original Smackdown oval stage would like nice. I've always liked that stage along with the Raw is War stage.

Missed you guys! I kinda took a step back from the forum during the cf. I didn’t wanna be guilted for not backing 😂 that being said I’m pretty bummed it didn’t happen, obviously. For you guys who love wcw, and for us, who this may affect future crowd funds. I hope they try different offerings of stages figures and play set combos; as opposed to taking this as a total loss. Just this iteration didn’t make the cut. I know they lost money on samples and things but in the grand scheme of a giant corporation like Mattel that’s Pennies. No real risk in trying again in nine months or so when they come up with a new game plan. Maybe wwf related or ruthless aggression with figure we likely wouldn’t get other wise; doink in ultimate and full announcer table macho. Not guys we we constantly get in gimmicks we constantly see, just so happening to be ftitl for ultimate(repeat diesel, repaint mysterio)
